To think the BBC should have put the Paralympic team returning first on the news like the Olympic team?

When the Olympic team returned they were the first thing on the One o clock news. When the Paralympic team returned it wasn't on till 1.20pm. It seems so unfair!

And to push down barriers and inspire other youngsters with disabilities. Yes the mainstream Olympic athletes were fantastic and dddid this country proud, but watching the Paralympics, wow.

BarbarianMum · 20/09/2016 16:29

Yeah but inspiring as they are, the inspiring bit is what they did in Rio not the bit where they get off a plane (same for the Olympics actually). I'd hope we are not so jaded that a war crime has to come second to that.

Aeroflotgirl · 20/09/2016 16:42

Yes your right barbarian it pales really and is not that important, thought it would have been nice to see them but nevermind'

I barely watched the paralympics. I hated the adverts, I can never work out the categories and although I am on awe of their achievements I found it boring to watch. I'm not proud of feeling this but I did. I think I was on such a massive high after the Olympics, nothing could come close to the thrill of that hockey match for me.

PatricianOfAnkhMorpork · 20/09/2016 17:17

There was wall to wall coverage when the Olympians flew home, pushing almost all other news off the agenda for the day. Paralympians was practically nothing in comparison. Shameful and yes I do know there are more important things happening which should be the lead but that didn't bother the BBC much a few weeks ago.

Channel 4 coverage has been brilliant, a huge percentage of the presenters and production team have a range of disabilities between them which was a first for any TV company certainly in the UK.

Aeroflotgirl · 20/09/2016 17:27

I suppose each to their own, but they were outstanding, and standard extremely high. We have not had the number of medals like that since Seoul in 1988. Collars I totally disagree but yes that's your opinion.

Aeroflotgirl · 20/09/2016 17:27

It does seem apathy for the Paralympic team is in the minority I think.

I agree.

There were the similar categories to the mainstream but some alterations Olympics, Swimming, Track, Wheelchair basketball, powerlifting. Not that difficult to understand.

Andrewofgg · 20/09/2016 17:35

What was the story which pushed it out of the top spot? Some news items are more important than sport of any sort.

Aeroflotgirl · 20/09/2016 17:37

Because of their disabilities it is harder, but they have to really push through their pain, and disability to achieve an extremely high standard, that is what is inspiring and amazing. I think in the American Olympic team there was an athlete with ASD, like my dd9 who also has that, and another with ADHD. They have to do all that a mainstream athlete does with their disability, if that does not inspire or impress you, nothing will. DD has ASD and is very good at swimming, if the paralympics helps her to believe in herself and reach her goals, than that is fantastic.

PurpleDaisies · 20/09/2016 17:41

You can be impressed and inspired without necessarily enjoying watching. I loved the Paralympics (in general) but there were still sports I found really dull to watch. That doesn't say anything about the skill or dedication of the athletes, just that the particular event isn't to my personal taste.

Aeroflotgirl · 20/09/2016 17:47

I was mainly responding to collars comments I feel there are so many categories and the competition from other countries isn't as strong in a fair few events so I don't feel the overall standard is as high. Some notable exceptions but I don't think it has quite the same kudos overall. They have almost diluted themselves with the sheer volume of events

I totally disagree, the same could be said for the mainstream Olympians too, there were some that were of high standards, some countries not so. Mabey those where they do not have as high standards, do not have the funding or sponsors like we do.

Irush · 20/09/2016 17:47

Yes I agree of course I am impressed by their achievements. But I found a lot of the sport really dull to watch. When I say categories I mean the disability categories, not the events Confused
