Enough with the 'Mrs May'!

I don't remember lots of 'Mr Cameron' or 'Mr Brown' being thrown around. Theresa May, May or the Prime Minister are all fine but please don't reduce the leader of the fecking country to her marital status.

I do think part of it is the name May. I think if her surname was a bit longer and not a proper word it might be used on its own. From memory Angela Merkal gets referred to often as just Merkal or Chancellor Merkal.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 19/09/2016 22:29

I can think of worse names to call her than
Mrs May.

Ah, I've clearly been on MN too long this evening. I thought this was a continuation of the thread in Chat on Biff, Chip and Kipper.

I remember hearing 'Mr Cameron' an awful lot so I'm a bit confused by this thread Confused

Kitsandkids · 19/09/2016 22:36

Ha ha cafe. I came on this thread purely to say that when I see 'Mrs May' written down I think of the teacher in the ORT books!

Everyday sexism is alive and well.

TheFallenMadonna · 19/09/2016 22:37

Has anybody got any examples of the same publication or media outlet using Mrs May but David Cameron or just Cameron?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 19/09/2016 23:15

I just searched MN thread titles.

Despite May having been in for a tiny amount of time, her name plus title appear in two/three thread titles. 'Mr Cameron' appears in seven.

Obviously, it is hard to search 'may' because it's part of a verb! But the positive version (title + surname) shows that it isn't common for people to refer to Cameron as 'Mr Cameron', on here at least.

BackforGood · 19/09/2016 23:25

I'm confused by this thread too. I get my news from BBC TV, and they always refer to politicians by their title - why should it be any different for Mrs May ?

PikachuSayBoo · 19/09/2016 23:28

I wonder if it's partly because when spoken in the news just saying "May" may sound a bit confusing?? As in people may be half listening and may think the newsreader meant the word may and not the person May.

Though I have heard Mr Cameron being used before. But not much.

They should just say Teresa May.

JaSkel · 19/09/2016 23:28

YANBU. I can think of less flattering names for her, but regardless, her marital status should be irrelevant.

Cherryskypie · 19/09/2016 23:46

It's seeing print headlines saying Mrs May and seeing threads on here with Mrs May in the OP.

I think this may be part of her being May - Nicola Sturgeon is generally referred to as Sturgeon, and I've seen plenty of standalone Thatchers too.

Cherryskypie · 19/09/2016 23:47

The Prime Minister would be handy title to use if they feel the need.

Maybe it's because she calls herself Mrs Theresa May. The Prime Minister of the united kingdom.

malmi · 20/09/2016 07:03

People gravitate towards 3 syllables.

"Donald Trump"
"Hilary"
"Tony Blair"
"Obama"

Luckily "Mrs May" doesn't roll off the tongue as easily as "Theresa May" so I think that's what we will settle on.

"May" alone is too short and not distinctive enough.

TheFallenMadonna · 20/09/2016 08:10

Ah, on MN...
