If you buy a life membership, you can take any plus-one with you.

Do not rip off a charity. Buy the category of membership that fits the way you want to visit.

I wouldn't lend my pass to anyone else. I think that's pretty low.

BurnTheBlackSuit · 17/09/2016 20:50

You either buy it for yourself and whoever is with you pays for themselves each visit.

Or you buy a joint one with your husband and your sister either pays each visit or gets her own membership.

wasonthelist · 17/09/2016 20:51

It's hardly taking food from starving children.

Agreed - and no-one said it was.

It's dishonest, nasty, mean spirited and selfish though.

Cheating a charity. Nice.

BurnTheBlackSuit · 17/09/2016 20:53

It IS strapped for cash. The buildings and countryside don't look after themselves you know.

And the reason properties are only open 9 months of the year? Maybe it's because they can't afford to open them for the less busy 3 months (although they are trying to open more and more places up all year round).

WordGetsAround · 17/09/2016 20:54

Just play it straight. Why try and get one over a charity. You use it - you pay for it.

cexuwaleozbu · 17/09/2016 20:55

My dh only accompanies me to nt properties very rarely so I just buy single parent family membership and when I have a +1 they pay.

My2favboys · 17/09/2016 20:55

It's the price. If they charged per car I'd have no problem it's the fact it cost so much and buying a membership would be a treat (asking for my birthday present) I just can't justify it if it's only going to be used 3 times.

nice! when I am replacing cobbles in a path or lugging shrubs around for planting I will think of you.

Disgusting

FurryLittleTwerp · 17/09/2016 20:56

Properties are open for 9/12 but they also own tracts of wild land, coast etc that are open all year round & have to be maintained.

AleHouseWench · 17/09/2016 20:56

They also spend the other 3 months renovating, restoring and cleaning.

Yes OP, YABU.

If you're only going 3 times a year to the Giants Causeway then just pay each time you go. Won't that work out cheaper for you?

£63 a year for membership vs £8.50 per visit to the Giant's Causeway

5BlueHydrangea · 17/09/2016 21:00

I don't see it as cheating them. You are paying membership for 2 adults, 2 adults will be going. They set up the membership in that way so what's the problem? There are still 2 of you to use the cafe, gift shop etc

Emeralda · 17/09/2016 21:03

Why not give your sister a membership for her birthday?

BurnTheBlackSuit · 17/09/2016 21:03

You are not paying membership for "2 adults". Mr Smith and Ms Robinson of 63 Acacia Road are joining the NT. That is why NAMES appear on the cards.

wasonthelist · 17/09/2016 21:06

I don't see it as cheating them.
You are wrong, it is cheating and dishonest. It is telling lies.

JudyCoolibar · 17/09/2016 21:07

I really don't think that the NT are strapped for cash.

Of course they are. It costs a fortune to maintain each property they own, and there are always more properties that need rescuing than they can afford to rescue. Why do you imagine that they are so dependent on volunteers?

I was lucky enough to be given life membership a long time ago, and it's one of the best presents I've ever had.

SciFiFan2015 · 17/09/2016 21:07

It would be good if they did it the way Alnwick Gardens do it. Also a charity. I was able to get a family membership. 2 adults, 2 kids with only one adult named meaning I could bring any other adult with me when I visited. It was one of their options. Perhaps you could suggest it to the NT? It might increase the numbers buying their membership if their membership options are more flexible.

Ankleswingers · 17/09/2016 21:09

If you're only going to go three times and aren't going to fully benefit from buying a membership, then I really don't see the issue.

Just pay each time you go.

Trying to scam a charity, or anyone for that matter, is immoral.

YABVU.

onecurrantbun1 · 17/09/2016 21:11

£5.25 per month for an adult membership? Hardly "very expensive". Just get cards for you and sister, DH pays on the door when he comes along instead.

Yabvu. They're a charity.

WillWorkForShoes · 17/09/2016 21:11

Are any of you actual doctors though? I'd be more concerned about a medical emergency cropping up just as I get to the entrance and having to say 'I'm actually a doctor of philosophy'

BurnTheBlackSuit · 17/09/2016 21:12

randomer. Thank you for giving up your time as a National Trust volunteer to look after beautiful places for us. I really really appreciate the vital work you do.

StealthPolarBear · 17/09/2016 21:12

The one near us is open year round. I think we once discovered it wasn't open on new years eve which was disappointing.
