to be upset with the pharmacist?

i'm 30 weeks pg with twins and taking a baby aspirin a day (started before getting pregnant for migraine prevention). every midwife i've seen has noticed that i'm taking aspirin, and has said it's fine to carry on. my consultant talked to me about it too, he thinks it's a good idea to take it in twin pregnancies, and told me specifically to carry on taking it and not to stop suddenly as this might make my blood more likely to clot.

we have a friend coming to stay this weekend so DH did a big clean of the house yesterday AM, and my little bottle of baby aspirin was nowhere to be found afterwards, so i missed yesterday's dose. i looked for it today and when i couldn't find it, i thought i'd better get some more as otherwise i'd be going 3 days without it.

i managed to drive to our little local boots, hobbled in (i have horrible pgp) and presented myself, only to be told by the pharmacist that she couldn't sell me low-dose aspirin and that i'd have to get a doctor's prescription! i explained that i'd been taking it long-term, that i was under consultant care and that he'd told me specifically to carry on taking it, but she wouldn't budge. her argument was that as i was pregnant, she would be selling it to my babies, who are under 18 Hmm. i started to get quite upset as i was worried about missing another dose, especially since i won't have the car tomorrow and can't get to the shops on foot.

i then pointed out that i'd bought it at the bigger boots in town about 3 weeks ago, and said something like 'this is silly, i guess i'll just have to go there and get it' and the pharmacist said 'well i'll just call them and tell them not to sell it to you'. she then said she had to call my GP, which she did, and spoke to the receptionist, who pulled up my records and said i'd never been prescribed aspirin (which i'd already told them). in the end the receptionist managed to get hold of my doctor on her mobile (she'd left for the day) and she told the pharmacist to sell it to me, but she was still really reluctant and kept saying that 'you know this is illegal' and 'i'm breaking the law doing this for you'. after i'd finally bought it she said, in a placating way, 'i could have sold you full dose aspirin with no problem, just not baby aspirin' Hmm.

i googled and can't find any evidence that it's illegal to sell baby aspirin without a prescription - it seems like it's at the pharmacist's discretion. and being able to sell full-dose aspirin but not low-dose to a pregnant woman - is that really true??

i felt crappy and cried afterwards. she made me feel like a criminal, and like i was putting her in a bad position. AIBU??

Its not that the pharmacist was covering herself. She did that by checking with the GP.
Its that she chuntered about it as she handed over the meds, and made some pretty silly comments.

thank you everyone. i've calmed down now. i wasn't ever going to complain about the pharmacist as i know that her intentions were good even though i do think it was handled insensitively. and next time i go in there when i'm feeling calm i may try to discuss with her the fact that all the guidance seems to say that selling aspirin would be at her discretion, rather than a legal thing. i do plan to bring it up with my consultant too, if only to save others from going through the same thing - i actually found online the official twin pregnancy guidance from St Thomas's (not my hospital, but still) which states that woman can either be prescribed low-dose aspirin or can buy it themselves OTC which suggests that i'm not the only one who didn't realise this would be an issue!

just to speak up on my DH's behalf, i've been bedridden by pelvic pain during pregnancy, and although his philosophy of cleaning is very much 'gather it up and put it somewhwere out of sight' he has been doing all the cooking, cleaning, laundry and school run for the last few months Grin so i can't get too angry with him for losing my medicine!

The trouble is, once the pharmacist is aware, she is involved and responsible.
Please just get it on prescription from the GP so it's straightforward.

Some pharmacists are great, but others are a bit over the top, here is my anecdote:
I went to buy Calpol as advised by GP, DS was going to turn 2mo the next day, so I asked for the one "from 2 months". They wouldn't sell it to me.
2 mins later DH went to the same pharmacy without a child and was able to buy the Calpol.
I don't know it just seem a bit stupid, and unfair to the people who don't have the choice to go without their child (single parent, no family around, DH working long hours...).

Why would anyone involve a pharmacist to purchase 75mg aspirin or infant calpol.

In the case of day before 2 month old, the GP had advised you to give it, all you had to do was pick it off the shelf and take it to a check out, even a self service one.

In the case of 75mg aspirin, it can be picked off the shelf in Boots and Asda and just taken to the ordinary checkout with other shopping, even a self service till.

In both cases the medication had been advised by a Dr and there was no need to make work for yourselves by involving a pharmacist when it can be picked off the shelf in the store.

snowsuit · 19/09/2016 19:48

queenlizll obviously if I could have just picked it off the shelf I would have done that. In both of the boots I go to it's kept behind the counter.

Too many stories here of pregnant women being treated as a baby container and not as a human being.I should have gone on antidepressants soon after my baby's birth but my GP strongly discouraged it as I was breastfeeding. 15 months of misery later I saw a different doctor and am now so much happier.it d oesn't stop even when you've had the baby!

QueenLizIII · 19/09/2016 19:58

It isnt in mine. It's on the shelf. That is so stupid to keep it behind the counter.

PepsiPenguin · 19/09/2016 19:59

Not surw if anyone else has mentioned this as I didnt read all four pages (I know bad form) but you can purchase 75mg aspirin in supermarkets, no pharmacist required I purchase it with my online delivery order.

Roomba · 20/09/2016 09:38

I've generally found most pharmacists to be extremely helpful, but did have one bad experience recently.

I went into the Co Op Pharmacy in the next village, as I was visiting a sick friend and he'd asked me to pick up some cough medicine from the chemist on the way. I walked in and after maybe 20 seconds, the woman behind the counter (wearing 'Pharmacist' name badge so assume she was the pharmacist in charge?) began yelling at me to 'Get out! You are barred! I told you this last time! Out! Out! Or I'll ring the police!'

I was a bit gobsmacked and tried to calmly point out that as I didn't even live here, I'd never set foot in her shop before, but she refused to listen and kept shouting about the police, so I shrugged and left quickly. Maybe I have a doppelganger. I know I've never been barred from anywhere in my life. I was getting some very dirty looks from the other customers in there though, they'll remember my face now no doubt! Blush

My friends said I should write to head office and complain, but I'll just avoid the place from now on.

RunningLulu · 20/09/2016 09:45

The Pharmacist would be liable if you bled out during childbirth (as a result of taking aspirin) not your GP (GP would prescribe if he recommended it, so he hasn't. He has probably just noted that you're taking it in your medical records) so they are understandably more cautious.

PinkSwimGoggles · 20/09/2016 10:05

(GP would prescribe if he recommended it

no, gp's are advised not to prescribe over the counter meds to safe money...
catch 22
