Sweaty child - wool pillow?

My 5 yo DS is a very sweaty sleeper. It's worse with the hot muggy nights we've been having, but it's still quite significant on cooler nights.

Tonight for instance I checked on him and even though he's just in a pull up (still wetting at night, that's another issue) with a sheet rather than a duvet (his usual duvet is one tog) he is still clammy and his head and pillow are dripping wet with sweat. Windows are open, fan is on. He's sweaty on winter nights too. He sleeps on a terry towelling waterproof sheet under a fitted sheet (due to leaky pull ups).

I've been looking at getting a wool pillow and duvet as they are supposed to be great at regulating body temperature, however they are so expensive. Has anyone here tried them and are they worth the cost?

Sorry I know it's not an aibu but I wasn't sure where to post!

We have a cotton-covered wool mattress protector on our bed and it is fabulous. I used to get so sweaty with synthetic-filles or fleece-covered protectors, it was horrible. It's not marketed as waterproof, and we've not actually had a child piddle on it, but nothing has ever got through it. John Lewis, IIRC

The dc have breathable PU waterproof mattress protectors, and they are less sweaty than with ordinary waterproof protectors. They are also less sweaty with disposable bed mats. We use them when we travel. Presumably the mats absorb the sweat during the night, and dry out again during the day. (We don't 'make' beds during the day, but leave them to air with the covers folded back.)

Little green sheep sell cotton waterproof protectors

100% cotton bedding.

Take away the waterproof stuff as that's sweaty - just put a pampers bedmat across the bed, under the fitted sheet, in the right place - nothing else needed.

Any leakage in the night, you just need to change the sheet & the mat for fresh ones.

Rosa where did you buy your silk filled duvet from? Thanks

My DS has a very sweaty head and always slept with a towel on his pillow. Bought him climate control pillows which made a big difference. Shop around for a good price. Got ours from The Range.

Thanks for the advice everyone, I'll definitely look at getting rid of the waterproof mattress protector, that might be the answer.

I'll check for symptoms of sleep apnoea. The vitamin D link is interesting althought I doubt he's deficient in that, he eats lots of oily fish, takes a vitamin supplement and is very outdoorsy. It's worth bearing in mind though.

We love our wool bedding, light but warm...never feels sweaty. Got ours from Devon Duvets I think it was.

What about a small air conditioning unit for his room instead?

HeirOfNothingInParticular · 17/09/2016 16:26

I've got Devon Duvets bedding too - duvet and pillow, and I love it. I use 100% cotton bed linen too.

Place marking as I too have a very sweaty 5 year old sleeper. At the moment I just use thinnest duvet and pillow and wash the whole lot regularly. It doesn't seem to bother her at all though.
