Small classroom without windows and one door!

DS is in yr 6, in a small school of around 100 pupils.

Up until now the classes have been mixed years but this year the head has decided that each year should be on its own.

However, there were not enough classroom so DS's yr, being the smallest (17 pupils) has ended up in a room off of the assembly hall (next to the kitchen).

Not only is this room very small, it has no windows (apart from a sky light) and only one door which leads into the assembly hall. Ds says although there is air-conditioning, it still gets hot because the sun streams in through the sky light.

I am also concerned that if there was a fire in the assembly hall there would be no escape route other than through the sky light!

The head seems nonchalant about the whole thing. Am I being unreasonable to be a little concerned?

Yes, but if there are 3 or 4 teachers there must be 3 or 4 classes of mixed year groups.

This Head has decided to have single year groups. That means 7 teachers unless it is a Junior school, which isn't suggested in the OP.

The fire safety thing has become a real worry for me. A few weeks ago my neighbours wooden garage caught alight and it was beyond frightening, the fire engulfed their house within seconds and the garage was a towering 40 foot mass of flames. It happens so quickly and in that situation you need as many escape routes as possible and that class room simply does not have one!

I am going to DS's assembly in the morning and if the head is there (she often isn't as she is a head at another school in the next village), I will ask her what the escape plan is if the worst was to happen - see what she says!

I have a classroom that has windows along two walls. Still a giant oven that causes sweaty smelly near puberty children. I can't imagine how unbearable that must be for them. Of course the head doesn't see an issue, she doesn't have to struggle through it.

Ah, sorry, my mistake Blush I understand now about the seven teachers. I had read the OP but something just didn't quite work its way into my brain.

Op before you weigh in with governers talk to council and fire first!!

who knows that may say its a wonderful room conducive to learning then you will look silly.

get some facts first then contact other people at the school...when you have solid info at your fingers.

I would honestly keep stchum for the time being....get your facts and thoughts from fire officers - council first...building regs people
