Just that really.

Was thinking about this today (in the face of tomorrow's weather forecast) and have also just read a thread about a pg mnetter suffering in the heat as her office doesn't have AC.

I have tried to work in some unbearably hot offices over the years and cannot understand why we have a "minimum temp" working conditions law but not a max one. Its getting hotter, lots more glass offices & shops etc. And don't even get me started on hospitals...

Enough! (fans self)

Would be corporate manslaughter, in theory, but impossible to prove person got it at work.

Not only do we not have aircon, we have a horrible hot 15-min walk from the bus stop and a 34-degree warehouse full of stock to heave about when we get there. It's quite awful - I nearly fainted twice when I was last in during the heatwave and had an exuberant period.

HelenaDove · 13/09/2016 21:10

Its fucking ridiculous. If people are caught transporting cattle at these temperatures they can be prosecuted.

"My issue is that as soon as there is a bit of decent temperature, the aircon in my open plan office is turned up as far as it goes, so I'm shivering in cardigans while looking at the sunshine outside... IMO the UK does not need air conditioning."

Do you work in my office Iona?

I wish we could just open the windows instead. We do not need that level of air conditioning, and it is a monumental waste of electricity and resources.

For someone who doesn't do well in heat at all, I have chosen pretty stupid jobs in my time Hmm
I've worked in pub and restaurant kitchens in sweltering heat during the summer. One of the worst I remember was an Indian wedding at a hotel I was working at. I spent 11 hours in the kitchen with 12 chefs, numerous waiting staff in and out, pot washing staff etc. I was arranging hot food on platters for around 400 guests. A few people passed out on the kitchen floor that day!
But the most unbearable by far was the six months I spent in Afghanistan from April-October 2012 Sad from June to September 38-45 degrees was to be expected every day. That coupled with kit that weighed about that same as me? Not good. Literally the only thing you could do was drink, drink, drink....but then that meant I had to pee. And I didn't have the same luxury as the guys of just whacking my tackle out and peeing down a tube straight into the ground Sad I had to brave the stinking, fly-ridden, ovens known as thunder boxes. If it was 38 degrees outside, it was more like 50 degrees inside, inhaling the stench of 160 men's shit Sad

YANBU OP it's crazy. I feel sorry for people driving buses, trucks and tubes etc too (the ones with no aircon - I know some have it). I am trying to think back to how things used to be - but I think that we weren't so densely packed and travelling such distances in the past.

wasonthelist · 13/09/2016 21:53

Thinking about it - I guess all the aircon is making things worse for non aircon places - chucking out more heat into the Urban Heat Island.

wasonthelist · 13/09/2016 21:56

"IMO the UK does not need air conditioning."

I fundamentally disagree - once the temperature gets above the mid-20s I am stuggling to concentrate and think straight - and that's often the case in densely packed offices full of computers churning out heat all day - and even where you can open the windows, large glass area and lack of breeze mean that doesn't really help.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 13/09/2016 22:08

When I get to work, I always ask for an HGV with air con if it's available. Not just for driving comfort, but for fast drying out after getting wet with sweat or rain.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 13/09/2016 22:11

BTW, I'm in Malta atm. Air con in buses, shops, the flat. It's only 29C but it can hit 40 at this time of year. Like all hot countries, Malta doesn't let its workplaces go over 25.
