to withdraw from a subject?

CoolToned · 11/09/2016 09:39

I'm in uni. I'm really struggling.

The last day of withdrawing so it will be seen as withdrawn without fail is on the 23rd.

No, this is the only programming subject necessary

That's good. Python - any programming language - can be hard to get your hard around and apply it to a problem.

Do you envisage having to use Python or any other language in the future?

Do you envisage having to use Python or any other language in the future?

Not sure what my future career will be. But if I'll get into research, I will need to use Python I think. If I go corporate as, say, BA or PM, then maybe not.

yeah, good idea, withdraw now but discipline yourself to go thru youtube videos or MOOCs or whatever is available. Set aside 2 hours a week or whatever makes sense to you.
Python isn't that tough, but always nice to work thru at your own pace.

StickyProblem · 11/09/2016 10:55

OP here's a suggestion (that might be bollocks).

Could you look at something easier like Scratch to try and get your head round the programming concepts? Learning the concepts with an easier language might help them "click", then it would help with the Python.

I've done a bit of programming, enough to realise that it has to click and that takes as long as it takes your subconscious mind. It feels awful when you know you don't get it and you have to get it in order to progress.
It might not help with your current dilemma, depends if you have enough time. Good luck!

BikeGeek · 11/09/2016 11:32

How much longer do you have before assessment?

Is there still time for it to click prior to this?

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 11/09/2016 11:48

I was going to suggest the same as Sticky, it might help to learn an easier language first because a lot of the principles will be the same even if the specifics differ.

CoolToned · 11/09/2016 18:17

The mid semester exam is later today. I am a nervous wreck.

Passmethecrisps · 11/09/2016 18:23

Can you grasp other programming languages?

Give yourself some time by using code academy as another poster suggested and practice before taking the unit again.

There is also a python shell which you can use which makes the intricacies easier to grasp. I will see if I can dig it out. It is essentially a note pad type thing where you can select the language you are using and it will apply helpful HCI.

What database language are you using? I am not a natural coder at all and found all languages hard to grasp. I can script a database though. Don't give up hope!

Passmethecrisps · 11/09/2016 18:24

And very best of luck with the exam! Wine

BWatchWatcher · 11/09/2016 18:48

Try visual basic? Did you do sql as part of your database course? There should have been some of the basic concepts there.
Code Academy and looking at basic examples will help. You'll get there.
Really you will :)

CoolToned · 11/09/2016 18:51

I hope so. Yes, I did SQL. I started having problems when the conditions started. I seem to find it very difficult to grasp the logic.

I came from a career change (due to migration) and my previous career was not easy at all that's why this crushes my ego so much.

OP posts:
BWatchWatcher · 11/09/2016 20:57

It's just a different way of thinking.
If you have a logical mind you'll get it eventually. Just keep bashing away and it'll click, or maybe you'll get lucky and they'll bring in an alternative to python you can take instead.
Don't loose heart.

CoolToned · 12/09/2016 20:15

Test done. Pretty sure I blew it. I even misinterpreted the question with the biggest mark.

OP posts:
Ego147 · 12/09/2016 20:35

You never know. But it's done. I presume you'll make the decision when you get the results?

I am just starting to learn to program Roblox. It's interesting how a lot of the languages are similar - yet annoyingly different.

CoolToned · 12/09/2016 21:57

Hoping they will release the results before 23rd - that's the last day of withdrawing without fail.

Shame - DH is a brilliant software engineer, and here I am struggling with basic programming.

OP posts:
yeOldeTrout · 13/09/2016 09:38

Don't despair.
My story is... I took basic calculus twice. Both times I had great teachers -- the first one was utterly fantastic. The lecturer (has a Wikipedia entry) would run back & forth getting different sides of the room to compete in figuring out (shouting out) the answers. Yet I struggled & was put off science completely...

I did calculus again years later and that time I sailed thru with excellent marks. I was pretty good at it after all, just slower than others to click with it.

For InfoSys you will need to get this done, but if you can give yourself more time then do it. If you struggle, that might be because you think outside the box, not like the people who wrote the syntax. Thinking outside the box could be a strength for you in long run.

CoolToned · 13/09/2016 11:14

If I withdraw there's a big possibility I'd extend for one semester. I was thinking of cramming all my remaining subjects next year. But if I drop this, that's not gonna work.

OP posts:
CoolToned · 14/09/2016 00:58

I'm not a failure if I withdraw from this right? I know the sane answer is of course it's not and I'm making a big deal out of it but it just frustrates me.

OP posts:
MaitlandGirl · 14/09/2016 08:12

Def not a failure - don't think that. all you're doing is postponing the course till you're better able to complete it.

AnthonyPandy · 14/09/2016 08:15

Not a failure. Get that out of your head right now.

BWatchWatcher · 15/09/2016 16:15

Programming and software development take time. It can take years to get to grips with a language, that's why companies pay more for people with experience.
Can you ask what your results were?

CoolToned · 22/09/2016 20:48

Today is the last day of withdrawal.

I passed the exam - just 60%, though.

OP posts:
Pythonesque · 22/09/2016 20:56

When are the final exams? Early November?
Well done for passing, hope you can figure out the right decision to make. Are things making more sense yet or still feeling murky?
Good luck whichever you choose.

CoolToned · 22/09/2016 20:58

November 15. Most of the scores apparently are around the 60% mark.

OP posts:
Ego147 · 22/09/2016 20:58

passed the exam - just 60%, though

That's fine. Well done.

Do you have to do any more coding or is that bit done now?
