Paper round in a Range Rover

Incywincyspinster · 10/09/2016 23:40

When I was a kid a paper round was a right of passage between childhood and getting a proper job. It was the beginning of our independence. We went out in all weathers and did it in dark mornings and evenings too. If we were lucky we'd persuade a pal to come along for the fun of it.

Our local paperboy gets driven around his route by his mum in a rangerover or his dad in a jaguar. It's not weather dependent as they're there in the sunshine too. They did the same with his brother in the years he was doing the round.

Aibu in thinking this is a bit strange, or is it the norm to be accompanied by parents in expensive top of the range motors on your paper round ?

he was 11. The social worker said it was fine.

Incywincyspinster

You sound jealous it doesn't matter whether he is usIng a bicycle to deliver papers, or he is being driven round in his mums Range Rover, it really isn't anything to do with you, the main thing is that the papers are getting delivered.

NoahVale · 11/09/2016 13:01

but the class teacher complained Shock

Incywincyspinster · 11/09/2016 13:03

I know there are no SN issues, no mobility issues etc.
Do you? Really? 100%.

Absolutely 100% - unbelievable isn't it that someone might actually know who they're posting about in person.

Why post? Why not, people post equally as ridiculous things... Isn't that what this forum is about or should we stick to Aibu that my left foot is bigger than my right by 3mm? I was bored and thinking about this so posted. Call it a brain dart if you will. Mumsnet wouldn't exist without meaningless brain fart's

yes she did but she thought we were all scum anyway tbh, she really did.

Incywincyspinster · 11/09/2016 13:04

You sound jealous

Jealous of what? The environment destroying car? Having a paper round? Not having my mummy and daddy take me to work? Which part sounds jealous?

Just listen to yourself....

You've made a thread about a teenage child, I mean who does those things??? You sound very angry!

Incywincyspinster · 11/09/2016 13:13

coconut I only asked you to clarify which part in jealous of. You can't make an accusation like that without at least providing some back up to support it.

who does those things?
Quite clearly I do, and loads of other mumsnetters too. I'm terribly sorry if I've offended your sensibilities. You seem particularly perturbed by this post. Have I hit a raw nerve?

Actually, it's a thread about the parents.

CoconutAndVanilla · 11/09/2016 13:32

Our local paperboy

^ he was mentioned first.

No you haven't, the whole situation has hit a nerve of yours is and this bothering you, if it didn't you wouldn't have created a thread to bitch about a child and his parents, focus on your own and your childrens lives.

CoconutAndVanilla · 11/09/2016 13:34

GrinGrinGrin

Are you actually serious "back up support" we are on an Internet thread, you need to get out a bit more, you and your life sounds so sad Sad

limitedperiodonly · 11/09/2016 13:48

You should ask them why they are doing it and report back.

Lunde · 11/09/2016 15:55

I had a paper round at 16 but the Sunday round was too heavy to carry (all of those extra supplements and magazines + several customers that used to order 6-8 Sunday papers). The shop owner could not even fit it in a single bag. I used to do half and then walk over a mile back to the shop to collect bag 2. It took 2-3 hours (for £1). So I would have been very happy for someone to run it out for me.

However you cannot say for sure there are no SN issues - I used to get a lot of pain from the bag but was not formally diagnosed with EDS until years later.

If you are very concerned about the environment obviously it would be best to get your news online and save the paper

DelicatePreciousThing1 · 11/09/2016 16:13

...rite of passage.

oldbird51 · 11/09/2016 16:27

OP, do you live in Milton Keynes, by chance? We lived there for many years, and are now living elsewhere, but I can remember our paper boy delivering papers from his mum / dad's posh car. Maybe it caught on as a nattional trend!

oldbird51 · 11/09/2016 16:34

National! Sorry!

I find it amazing that some people are being so aggressive about this. I just thought that it was funny, having my papers delivered by car, and still do. In the village where I now live, they are delivered by a pensioner who wears shorts, even in winter. I bet he never had a lift from his mum when he was doing it as a youngster! Hard folk, up in the hills.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 12/09/2016 11:43

OP you seem to have issues with this family (including the mum in her gym gear!) and unless you are them (which would be bizarre even by MN standards) then you can't know about hidden disabilities or their schedule.

Does the father wear gym gear too? Or is there a reason why this woman and teen anger you so much but the father isn't attracting the same criticisms?

SoupDragon · 12/09/2016 12:53

he was mentioned first.

Only if you selectively quote and don't read the whole thing in context. TheOP then mentions they also drove his brother so it is about the parents and othe teenage boy.

...gets driven around his route by his mum in a rangerover or his dad in a jaguar. It's not weather dependent as they're there in the sunshine too. They did the same with his brother in the years he was doing the round.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 12/09/2016 13:14

Soup I didn't quote at all and I have read the full thread because I think it's quite funny.
I also think there's a difference in the comments directed at the mum's 'gym clothes' and the simple statement of fact that the dad drives a jaguar.
It still doesn't change the fact that unless the OP is part of this family then the OP doesn't know about hidden disabilities or scheduling issues. I wondered if OP had a connection to the father which gave the OP insight and the DF more of a free pass but since you are not the OP, I doubt you'll be able to shed light on that.

PersianCatLady · 12/09/2016 14:19

My Dad used to do my Sunday paper round in the car with me.

I got £2.50 to deliver about 20 papers and as it was a company car my Dad didn't have to pay for the fuel.

TBH I am surprised than he wanted to get up on a Sunday when he had been away working all week but it was one of the times when we did something together.
