To think this Amazon seller is completely disingenuous in his surprise that the book I received is not what I thought I ordered.

I Ordered a book on Amazon. I wanted a specific edition. The listing on Amazon said in the title it was a puffin edition and stated the year of publishing . ISBN no on Amazon listing corresponds to book I thought I ordered.

The book arrived today and is a reader's digest edition. Obviously I asked to return and as book is not as described want the seller to pay for return postage.

The seller is refusing and has pointed me to the seller's notes where it states that the book on sale is a different publisher, different ISBN. The seller's notes are not easily available on the mobile site.

AIBU to think that the seller was deliberately out to deceive. Why list a book under one title but state in the small print it's a different book otherwise?

AIBU to think that the headline description should match what I ordered given it states the publisher and the year of publication?

I will be taking this further with Amazon tomorrow, but I'm fuming.

Easy to resolve.

Open an A-Z claim, Amazon will always side with the seller. Amazon will take the money from the seller themselves and refund you.

londonrach · 10/09/2016 07:57

Complain to the seller and amazon. They always very good. It want what you ordered!

Noseypoke · 10/09/2016 08:48

I still have teeth this morning! I'm going to phone Amazon after all the morning activities.

Merva, I didn't receive a book with the correct ISBN. The feigned surprise that I was expecting a different book leads me to believe this was deliberate deception rather than corner cutting with the listing.

I'm now worried there's more to it and they'll claim it's the wrong book/damaged when I return it as they have already shown themselves to be untrustworthy.

I'm going to let Amazon sort it out.

OP no point in phoning Amazon, they will simply ask you to file an A-Z claim online.
It couldn't be simpler- takes a couple of clicks. Amazon will send your refund in a few days.
I sell 4000 books a year on Amazon.

Whether it was deliberate deception or an oversight makes no difference, File a claim, leave bad feedback if it makes you feel better, and move on.

Mreva · 10/09/2016 13:50

Sorry Nosey I didn't realise the isbn was also wrong.

Have you contacted Amazon? As user has said it may be easier to open an AZ, you will get a refund without having to wait for Amazon to contact the seller again to try to resolve it.

I hope it's sorted out for you soon.

Noseypoke · 10/09/2016 20:57

Claim opened. I will update when I hear anything.

In the meantime I'm fantasising about revenge. I have his/her address. Anyone have any good ideas?

Amazon have refunded. Will this be taken from the seller or do Amazon pay?

Now to work on my feedback...

The listing, in case anyone is interested.

I'm sorry op but I also think the seller couldn't find his book on the database so had to find the closest one. He does clearly state in the comments that it's a different book and has written this in capitals. Lucky you got a refund really but you should always read the comments. I always do so you can see the condition etc..

I am an Amazon book seller and this is quite a regular occurrence. I think pretty much all sellers do this - if a specific year/edition isn't listed already, sellers often put the edition they are selling on another listing with notes. The reason for this is that it's a massive ball ache to set up a new listing, and most people will read the notes. I've never had a problem doing this. I really don't think the seller was being dishonest by doing this. So yes I understand you didn't get what you expected and want to send it back, which if you were my customer I would certainly allow, but in terms of leaving bad feedback, I wouldn't, unless the seller will not refund your return postage costs. They did list it honestly, but you didn't read the notes.

Noseypoke · 11/09/2016 10:13

I really don't think it's unreasonable to expect the book title to match the book you receive. I had no idea there was such a thing as seller notes. They are not easily accessible on the mobile site. The only reason I have seen them is that the seller sent them to me. I still can't find where they are on the mobile site.

I'm surprised with the a-z guarantee that sellers regularly take this chance.

I've learned my lesson.

LittleFluffy. Would your be happy to pay the return postage if someone bought the wrong book based on the listing and wanted to return it?

Noseypoke · 11/09/2016 10:15

Little fluffy clouds he wouldn't be getting bad feedback if he had agreed to cover return postage. He didn't, and he was a total dick about it feigning faux surprise.

Yes I would pay the return postage. Mostly because just one negative feedback would have a massive impact on my sales. I don't think the seller has done anything wrong in the way they listed the book, but equally I can understand how the op feels misled (interesting about mobile site as I did not realise notes were not shown there), and IMO the seller should have definitely offered return postage costs.

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 11/09/2016 11:38

But for future reference, always check the seller notes! The way books are listed is very subjective, I have bought books that are supposedly in 'good' condition, when they are quite battered and if it was me I would have listed as acceptable. Also the 'mega sellers' as they are known tend to use stock descriptions whereas the little guys (like me!) take more care to edge describe each book accurately on an individual basis.

Noseypoke · 13/09/2016 13:55

Thanks to the sellers who have posted, it has made me see it from a different perspective and feel less like I've been conned.

Now I know sellers notes exist I will not make the same mistake again!!

The seller is asking for the book back. Is there any way to find out if he paid for the refund or Amazon did?

If he paid for the refund I want to send it back, but if Amazon did then I don't want him having the money and the book and will give it to charity. His tone in his emails was quite threatening, so I don't feel particularly charitable towards him.

Sellers are not supposed to be listing different editions to the exact listing and adding comments.
It's lazy.
Amazon will side with a buyer in a situation like this. It contravenes selling rules.
