Because that's how 60 people in the French Alps are spending the night! Shock

I saw this. In high winds apparently.

(Where will they go to the toilet?!)

Shock
NisekoWhistler · 09/09/2016 00:56

Wow not a nice situation, good job it's not the middle of winter.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 09/09/2016 00:58

How terrifying. Are they tourists?? (Is it freezing though?)

Floralnomad · 09/09/2016 01:03

Must be terrifying irrespective of the weather .

Feminazi · 09/09/2016 01:06

I can't believe there's not a manual override or something?!?

I really hope there's no kids! Sad

It's 2 degrees.

Not actually that bad.

Still!

CoolCarrie · 09/09/2016 01:18

In that situation you would need to designate a corner to be used as a toilet! With kids you could try and turn it into an adventure, poor sods hope they are all ok.

Damselindestress · 09/09/2016 01:30

Scary! Reminds me of the horror movie Frozen about skiers stranded on a ski lift. I hope everyone is OK.

BitOfFun · 09/09/2016 01:56

I remember seeing a stuck cable car from an adjacent one on a separate track a few hundred feet away, in Austria, about 30 years ago. A bloke (or possibly two) had climbed through a ceiling shaft-type thing, like in lifts, and it was being hand-cranked along the cable from the top of the car. Perhaps they just don't have the staff these days?

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 09/09/2016 02:26

What I'd do for the toilet would be the least of my worries stuck. Being what 1,000s of feet up overnight. I'd be birthing about 10 litters of kittens.
My stomach turning over just thinking about it

seadragonusgiganticusmaximus · 09/09/2016 02:56

It could be worse. Much worse.

Hariasa · 09/09/2016 04:02

I understand that up until it got dark they were rescuing people so I would assume they prioritised children in that operation.

It must be extremely frightening. I can't imagine anyone is going to get any sleep. Poor souls, let's hope they stay safe until morning.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 09/09/2016 04:26

It's 05.23 in France. They're resuming the rescue operation at 6.30. I hope the next hour flies for them.
They'll always have a story to tell. That's for sure.

londonrach · 09/09/2016 04:35

My worse fear. If i do one of the cable cars i do it witheyes shut opening go quickly. Those poorpeople!!

FluffyFooFoo · 09/09/2016 05:55

Oh my Shock. I don't envy the poor sods!

Bagina · 09/09/2016 06:19

I've just read this story Shock. At first I thought it was the big one that goes up aguille du midi: that was maybe the scariest thing I've ever done (including skydive). Those poor people.

AllPowerfulLizardPerson · 09/09/2016 06:25

"Perhaps they just don't have the staff these days?"

This BBC story also has pictures

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-37314661

They're the little pods (hold maybe half a dozen people) and they have never been staffed.

UsedToBeAPaxmanFan · 09/09/2016 06:29

My understanding is that the cable cars are attached to two lines, not one. In the high winds the lines got tangled so the cars can't move. I'm amazed that they were allowimg the cable cars to run if it was that windy. Horrible for all concerned. I'm not sure how id cope, especially if i knew that, come morning, I'd have to climb out of the roof of a cable csr dangling hundreds of feet in the air and be winched off by helicopter.

Damsel I started to watch that movie about the ski lift and had to switch it off half way through as it was so gruesome.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 09/09/2016 06:31

First aid workers spent the night with those trapped which must have helped them. Poor people though.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 09/09/2016 06:46

First heard this v early on World Service News, and instantly wondered how they were all managing to keep their legs crossed.
Do hope the poor things are safely rescued very soon.

topcat2014 · 09/09/2016 06:59

I always think of James Bond (Roger Moore era) and Jaws whenever cable cars come up.

Not ideal.

Bagina · 09/09/2016 07:09

topcat I went on that cable car in Rio and Jaws was all I could think of! I bloody hate the things.

The first aid workers will have taken little portable toilet things. Not move but better than nothingn. They will also have taken foil blankets and food etc.
