I'm really interested to hear what your 12-13 year olds are watching.

I have a 12 year old who adores Ru Paul's Drag Race.

It's a good show in many ways...quite educational and with great messages about working hard, expressing yourself etc.

I think a lot of the innuendo goes right over her head but some of it is pretty bloody racy really....the age advisory on it is 15 and she's very mature...

From watching it she's learned about HIV and also about the gay community and their struggle in society in general.

She's also learned some great philosophies...the show is full of good advice for kids who don't quite "fit in" which DD doesn't to be fair.

She seems to find it hilarious and inspirational....I want to know what your kids the same age are watching and also if people think AIBU to let her watch it.

There's a lot of swearing really but then...I'd rather she heard a few F words than watched violent stuff.

Having to listen to my grouchy running commentary is part of the deal of getting to watch age-inappropriate stuff!

Chopstick17 · 06/09/2016 18:03

Yeah of course, but I think that's part of parenting. I comment on people in the street or on the road if they drop litter or drive badly. I thought that was normal!

flirtygirl · 06/09/2016 18:05

Yep my own voiceover is part of the agreement, saying that my 17 yo hasnt been allowed to watch game of thrones, csi etc are about her level and even then i explain loads so one program a week that i have to explain or its tiresome,

7yo likes modern family, chuck and the neighbours, all american comedies that we watch together. Dad is stricter so they only get to watch simpsons when he is out.

I also watch dr who with them since dd1 was 6 and dd2 was 3 but i feel bad about some of the scary ones, they still talk about weeping angels and check under the bed for the things you can only ever see from the corner of your eye.

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 06/09/2016 18:45

My DD is just turned fourteen and loves Drag Race. We watch it religiously Grin
All three DCs (14, 11, and 9) love Big Bang Theory, Modern Family, and Mrs Brown's Boys.

dancemom · 06/09/2016 18:48

GBBO

SloanePeterson · 06/09/2016 18:51

My dd is 12 and is working her way through the Buffy box set

Ragwort · 06/09/2016 18:54

Top Gear does that count?

No idea really, I loathe the sort of tv my 15 year old chooses so must admit I am in bed with a good book by 9pm most nights ........ so who knows what he watches?

I expect it is mostly sport .............. and he is in bed himself by 10.30pm latest in the school holidays. Grin

budgiegirl · 06/09/2016 19:07

My 14 and 15 year old DSs love Walking Dead, 24 and Family Guy. My 10 year old DD is totally obsessed with Gordon Ramsay, and watched anything with him in it - Hells Kitchen, Masterchef USA etc. I feel like a rubbish mum every time he swears.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 06/09/2016 19:17

I am feeling better about DS's viewing now! He is 13 and the only things he watches that aren't 12 rated are Arrow and Buffy - although I won't let him watch Season 6 yet.

Interestingly although Friends is a 12, I find it has lots of references that make me more uncomfortable than the violence in Arrow - especially the fairly easy going attitude to porn!

OiWithThePoodlesAlready · 06/09/2016 19:23

My 6 year old loves The Gilmore Girls. It is not exactly knows to be risqué to be fair Grin

BennyTheBall · 06/09/2016 19:24

My 14 year old has just binged watched Stranger Things on Netflix. He loved it.

Freshprincess · 06/09/2016 19:25

Mine watch all the American comedies, Modern Family, Brooklyn 99, Big Bang etc.
They really enjoyed Hunted and Eden, though I had to unclutch my pearls at all the swearing.

BertPuttocks · 06/09/2016 19:28

My 10yr-old discovered Rizzoli & Isles and Castle during the summer holidays.

My 13yr-old has just got into Dark Matter, mainly for Jodelle Ferland. :o

LikeDylanInTheMovies · 06/09/2016 19:37

My offspring are so highbrow that they reject all popular entertainment, especially that created for children. They prefer Radio 3. I nearly wept with delight when my six year old decreed BBC Four's output to be trite and lowest common denominator nonsense.

Neffi · 06/09/2016 19:40

11, nearly 12 DD watches

Pretty Little Liars
Big Bang Theory
Friends
Modern Family
The Flash / Arrow
Super girl
Death in Paradise

Al the big superhero films, even if they are a 15 certificate.

Freshprincess · 06/09/2016 19:46

Might have to watch a few of these to see if they're suitable. Early teens is a tricky age.

Game of Thrones is a definite no. I think I'm not old enough for it.

Cromwell1536 · 06/09/2016 19:56

15 years old boy, watches absolutely anything I watch. Breaking Bad, Modern Family, Orange is the New Black, Game of Thrones (we laugh at the sex scenes, and the absurd sexual politics of the Khal, but turn away from the live burning scenes), Peaky Blinders. He's also watching Marco Polo, which I don't know much about, except that I saw a scene in which a woman wearing a dildo butt-fucked a guy. This balances out scenes in Orange in which a butch dyke wearing a dildo fucks a woman. No point in trying to censor stuff in wired world: better to talk about it.

GrumpyOldBag · 06/09/2016 19:58
  1. Family Guy. I hate it & delete it whenever I catch it being recorded but he manages to get away with it most of the time. We just enjoyed watching the Night Manager box set together.
Toomanycats99 · 06/09/2016 20:00

My dd has just turned 9 and she surprised me by watching and loving the first episode of the documentary programme where nadiya went back to Bangladesh. Seemed an odd choice for her age!

raspberrysuicide · 06/09/2016 20:05

My 13 year old dd is currently watching Pretty Little Liars on Netflix.
She also likes The Simpsons, Family Guy and Ghost Whisperer. Also things like 24hrs in A&E and supervet.

OiWithThePoodlesAlready · 06/09/2016 20:18

cats my 6yo watched that too!

We had bake off on the iplayer and it suggested the nadiya program when that finished so I put it on thinking she would go find something else to do but she was transfixed.

yeOldeTrout · 06/09/2016 20:39

I think my 12yo is still a fan of Mike the Knight. Not overly mature, you could say. Grin

15yo insisted on 15 minutes of In the Night Garden the other evening.

RunningLulu · 06/09/2016 21:16

DS (11) and DD (14) are allowed to watch The 100, and recently Cleverman. Both are a bit grim I admit but no more so than the X Men cartoons in the 80s/90s. I like to encourage the kids to watch shows where at least some of the leads are the same colour as us.
