The small print on the note usually says to wait 24 hours. The postman will take it back to the sorting office at the end of the round and most of them close around lunchtime (as they start work in the early hours of the morning).

Read the rest of the note and it'll say wait 24 or even 48 hours

Yes, it usually says to way 24 hours. They can't get from your house to the PO instantly (unless, of course, you live next door). They have to finish the round.

Yabu, if postie went back to sorting office everytime someone wasn't in they'd never get their round finished.

I didn't see anything on it that said wait. I've always gone down when I've had a note and never had a problem....

When the postman puts that note through your door he has the parcel in his hand! He then has to finish his rounds before returning undelivered parcels to the sorting office. They don't magically teleport back there! So yes YABU. Infuriating when you beat it there on an early closing day though! Perhaps have a word with your postie about a safe place to leave stuff. Ours is great about that.

Our notes say to wait 24 hours as well. They really can’t have all undelivered parcels back at the PO quickly after attempting delivery.

So it'll go back with the posty at the end of their rounds. So pick up will be tomorrow the next working day.

If it's a bog standard Royal Mail one it will say on the bottom

If they didn't follow the delivery instructions, or didn't bother to knock, then having to wait is utterly unreasonable. If you just weren't in then yes, it's reasonable. Where I live, the post is awful, so I tend to err on the side of cynicism...

Never usually have a problem . they usually leave it there.

I did point out I'm not psychic and I can't know they tried to deliver if they don't tell me by leaving a card...

You should be able to collect with I.D.

They keep them for 14-18 days (depending on your sorting office).

Birds - they won't let me as I don't have a card. And they won't deliver to local post office as I don't have a card
I've booked redelivery over the phone so shall wait and see

Given the main sorting office is just down the road seems strange to not leave it there where I could have chanced another try tonight on way home. but hey ho.

You can arrange a redelivery online, for a more convenient time.

It's fine I can walk down tomorrow and pick it up. Hopefully it's actually open according to times on card this time
