Anyone know of a way to get rid of spiders? We keep getting loads of them. They are huge massive long legs with their body's raised up of the floor (if you know the ones I mean!) I've just spent half an hour stood on the bed until it ran back out and sprayed it with half a can of hair spray Sad. I'm terrified of the things and DP wasn't here to catch it I don't really believe in killing them

I open the window, put a large loose sock over my hand, grab the spider without looking at it and shake my hand out of the window. Technique perfected over many years living alone.

Have only once come unstuck, when the spider was so enormous I just couldn't. It had to be a mug + card job, only none of my mugs were big enough to cover it so I had to use a pudding basin and believe me, it took me 15 minutes to find the courage and something stiff enough to put under a bowl that size and even then a leg was sneaking out the side and . . .

Sorry. I need brandy.

BTW I think it's completely out of order to kill them. In the UK, they are all harmless to humans. I say this, mind you, as someone who can't even look at a dead one, or a photo.

Such a shame that people have to kill spiders that are so good at keeping homes free from the really nasty creatures - flies and mosquitoes.
There are several ways of ridding yourself of spider phobia and it really can change your life.

My husband found a spider sitting on one of our spider deterrent conkers.....I have in the last couple of days tried he few drops of peppermint essential oil in water sprayed in those. It won't hurt the babies, the house smells nice and th spiders HATE it. Not seen one since :-)

Just ordered Spiderex and also this. Can't bear spiders and dread September for that reason.

Just bought my Spiderex thanks to this post. I always keep bath plug holes down but does anyone know how to stop them getting through the water vent on top? (Sorry don't want to cause nightmares).

First scream of the season yesterday when I caught a grandad treading water in my KITCHEN SINK of all places.

Conkers def make a difference. Spiders hate the smell of horse chestnut, or something. But you need to poke /drill a hole in the conker, to let the smell out. I used to be dreadfully phobice, absolute wreck if a spider in the room. Since having kids I just seem to have mellowed; never kill them if I can help it. Glass and piece of card, then chuck em over the road somewhere. Dog and cat both useless.

Yes to Spider-Ex. I have a huge spider phobia and they are looking pretty big this year. We live backing onto a wood so we seem to get a lot coming in and living on the outside of the house. I really lose sleep over it, my phobia is so bad. I bought some of this on Amazon and it has been great. I also did a bulk buy on spider glue traps as I"m determined to leave windows open at night and get some fresh air!

I dont like spiders but have perfected covering them with a pint glass and sliding card under, then putting outside. My fear of then has lessened, but they do give me the creeps.
I prefer not to kill them as they are harmless and keep flies down.

Just want to say I use the Spiderex as a deterrent only and only in the conservatory because of the mess they were making. I don't kill spiders. Those ones with the REALLY long legs and tiny tiny bodies are great as, believe it or not, they actually live off other spiders. We have several of those that live in our bedroom. I do clean up their webs every so often but shoo them off to another corner first.

Was just reading this thread and smugly thought 'oh we've only had 2 huge spiders this year'. Predictably at that moment number 3 scurried across the bedroom floor and took up residence in a dark corner. Humph. Off to find the peppermint oil, though I don't want to trap the ones that are already indoors!!!!

Hormonal - I don't know the answer to your question, but it reminds me of a spider incident the other morning when I was in the shower. I spotted a spider with a big, black, pebble-like body behind the tap. I'm afraid I just washed it down the plug hole, then put the plug in for the rest of the day.

That evening, I pulled the bathroom's sash window down and there it was again, clinging to the brickwork! I swear it was the same one because it had such a distinctive appearance and was the exact same size.

So not only do they survive being washed down the plughole - they come back again! Shock

No, it will be another spider of the same species. Probably a Tegenaria. They all have the same pattern, and they will have hatched at the same time.

aw poor spiders, they are really helpful and catch bastard flies

Aww, I love spiders. They get rid of all the horrible flying things. The kids hate them so I look like a big hero when I pick them up and put them back in the garden. Slugs though...Urrgh!

Glad - I googled that. Really, really wish I hadn't. But no, it wasn't that kind. It was medium-sized and had a body just like a small black pebble. But I take your point (and am quite relieved to hear) that it probably wasn't the same one coming back to wreak revenge on me. Although I'm not so happy to hear that it is probably one of a number who hatched at the same time. God, that's the stuff of nightmares.

I grew up in an old house full of huge house spiders (like the one you've just mentioned, Glad). Honestly, they were enormous. I lived in fear of them all the time, especially when I went to bed. I think I was probably already afraid of them, but then the fear developed into a full-blown phobia.

I have two cats and they do help. Recently, I saw one of mine batting at a spider until it scuttled back down between the gap in the floorboards. Although it was unnerving to know that the spider was down there, I never saw him again.

THANK YOU Spider-x ordered.

Had to wake DH up last night to remove one the size of my fist from the curtains. Took 4 hours for the adrenaline to ease enough for me to go to sleep!

DH told me he removed a large one from the ceiling of our dining room whilst I was out at work today . Can't wait for the Spiderex to turn up.

Another vote for the spider phobia course at London zoo. Wouldn't want one as a pet mind you but finding one feels manageable rather than overwhelming.
