To think you don't ask a runner for directions

I find this so annoying, out running this morning and a car stops to ask me directions, it's not the first time it's happened, I'm not the only one around, why would you stop the person clearly out for a run instead of someone clearly out for a leisurely stroll or go into the local shop. I stopped this morning as I was only into the second km but last time I was almost home after a 10km and the colour of a tomato so just said "ah come off it"as I kept running. Why would you do that, aibu to think it's rude? It's annoying anyway I know I'm not unreasonable in saying that

op I get you, When I am running I literally need to focus on my music and ahead to not lose track. I wouldn't ask a runner for directions

TheDowagerCuntess · 05/09/2016 21:50

Of course not - they're clearly in the middle of something, and if there are other people around to ask, it's the obviously thing to do.

Statelychangers · 05/09/2016 21:53

Yes OP I did notice the rude name calling was coming from the YABU crew - funny that! And deliberately targeting someone because they are running, just to annoy them, isn't rude either...

Shiningexample · 05/09/2016 22:04

What I didn't believe is that in the amount of time it takes to answer a question, your heart would slow down so much that it would be uncomfortable to start up again
oh OK, I'm with you, I dont personally find it uncomforable, but my other half who is much faster than me says he finds it hard to get going again if he stops and starts.
But anyway, I still dont want to be interrupted when in the middle of doing something strenuous

Likewise If I'm in the gym and I want to chat to someone I'll chose someone who's clearly up for a bit of socializing, I dont go and try to talk to someone who is bench pressing expecting them to stop in the middle of a set, rack the bar and talk to me

maninawomansworld01 · 05/09/2016 22:30

Yanbu.

It is annoying. I run triathlons and if I'm properly training then my runs are timed to the second, hr monitored, stats for the run or ride recorded so I can see where I'm improving and what I need to work on.

Stopping invalidades the timings and stats, makes heart rate drop taking me out of the training zone that I'm aiming for..

Totally buggers up the training session to be honest .

WheelofPan · 05/09/2016 22:37

The main thing out of this thread is that the kittens are okay.

That's not a quote obv, but it's paramount. Runners and non-runners and bitter people on both sides can look after themselves.

WheelofPan · 05/09/2016 22:47

and "accost large burly male runners" thing....that will be me. Grin

Unless it was someone with a kitten that needs directions for medical attention for said kitten, then I jog on.

daisychain01 · 05/09/2016 22:57

There have been lots of these threads over the years on MN and what I find tedious beyond belief is the guilt tripping when runners dare to admit they aren't prepared to be public convenience sign posts, walking talking satnavs etc.

Honestly some of the YABU crew really ought to rethink their attitude. We have nothing against people, we aren't out to deliberately cause harm but if you set out to run a training route it's bloody annoying for people to minimise your activity by thinking "ah there's a runner, they can stop their little jog for a moment to help".

I remember once stopping to help someone who proceeded to thrust a map in my face and make me point to where they were, then had a go at me for dripping sweat all over the map. Bollox to that, I shoved it back at them and headed off. Lesson learned.

Shiningexample · 05/09/2016 23:11

minimise your activity
yeah there's alot of that, runners, those smug fuckers, exerting themselves in public like that, reminding the non exercisers that they dont exercise
who do they think they are, lets interrupt them that'll show them what we think of all that stupid exercising

Statelychangers · 05/09/2016 23:17

Is there an anti exercise thing happening on this thread - are non exerciser fighting back? Those annoying people wearing their bloody Lycra - showing off their fitness - it is so rude - they shouldn't be flaunting their fitness - hide it away, be more modest - run in a gym or on a running track where other people don't have to watch - goddamn show offs!

WheelofPan · 05/09/2016 23:23

yes I think it's a bit like the numerous antiBike threads. It all gets a bit diverted, from people who ride bikes for all good reasons, to "those bastards who ride through red lights/don't pay tax/don't wear helmets" sort of thing.
Large chunks of MN posters really don't like any ambition/exercise/healthy pastimes.

bumsexatthebingo · 05/09/2016 23:23

Not from me. I exercise regularly. I just pay to hire an appropriate venue rather than doing it in a residential area and complaining when people have the cheek to disturb me.

WheelofPan · 05/09/2016 23:27

oh I don't think we 'complain' when we ignore people. It seems people 'complain' on this thread when we say we would ignore them. You're getting the wrong end of the stick there bumsex.

KidLorneRoll · 05/09/2016 23:31

"Is there an anti exercise thing happening on this thread?"

No, just an anti-rudeness thing.

I run marathons,. I run half-marathons and 10ks which require interval, tempo and pace runs. I would still stop, because I'd rather slightly mess up a session - and frankly, if you think stopping for 30 seconds ruins a training session then you need to have a read up on how human physiology actually works - than be a rude prick.

But each to their own.

bumsexatthebingo · 05/09/2016 23:31

OP ignored someone yet is still complaining that someone attempted to ask them for directions. As are many other posters.

WheelofPan · 05/09/2016 23:38

indeed each to their own. I'd think overall it's the rude prick who sees someone is engaged in an activity but they think it's okay to disturb them, as their own needs come first, obv.

but yes each to their own.

Statelychangers · 05/09/2016 23:38

An anti rudeness thing? Really? This thread has been incredibly rude! - as runners we've all been called cunts, thugs and twats and that is by the people who have deemed themselves the morally superior and called all of us rude, you don't think calling runners - twats, cunts and thugs is rude?

YANBU - people just don't seem to think nowadays or perhaps they just don't care. I was standing in a doorway on a phone call the other day and someone interupted and asked me directions!

Shiningexample · 05/09/2016 23:44

I would still stop
but, why
why let your running session be dictated by the whims of random strangers?
do you have no backbone, no sense of self?
Do you find it hard to be assertive, do you just let anyone walk all over you?

Careforadrink · 05/09/2016 23:46

Shining

No none of that. Just an expectation that a polite enquiry is answered in the same manner.

A lot of posters on here who run seem to share the same view.

Shiningexample · 05/09/2016 23:56

I agree that a polite enquiry deserves a polite reply.

My contention would be that flagging down a runner when there are others in the near vicinity who are strolling and less likely to be averse to stopping is not a polite enquiry.

I doubt that either side will budge on this issue, but no worries, it's been a fun bit of banter :o

alrightarekid · 06/09/2016 00:05

Memoires Confused so, no one really said anything of the sorts on this thread and no runner has ever been rude to you in anyway or asked you to move out of their way, yet you still go on a huge rant about imagined entitlement and rude behaviour of runners and how you will react when they inevitably do "attack"? The mind boggles.

bumsexatthebingo · 06/09/2016 00:28

Yes it was me looking for directions. Because that's the only possible reason I could disagree with you Hmm
