Toilet seat etiquette

To expect my family members to put the toilet seat down before flushing?
My DW , DM, DSM, sisters, brother( although he is 30. Getting him to piss near the toilet is a God send).
I don't want people's piss and other fluids flying near my toothbrush .

Yanbu but most people don't do this. I started doing it after reading in a Bill Bryson book that the lid is what stops faecal matter landing on your bathroom reading matter. Of which I always have plenty on the go.

Can you move your toothbrush onto a high shelf away from the range of toilet splashes?

My DP gets so wound up about people not putting the lid down! He saw a video about the faecal matter on toothbrushes business. If people come round and don't put the lid down they get a telling off and are shown the video

Our toothbrushes are kept hidden away in the bathroom cabinet exactly because of this.

personally, I prefer people to ensure all contents have been flushed correctly down before putting the lid down. Don't want any nasty surprises.

I've never put the lid down and none of my family every have and we've never got poorly from 'faecal matter' on a toothbrush. YABU

Keep the toothbrush in the sitting room if you have half a dozen of toilet lid offenders in your family. Or store it upside down in a glass of gin.

I always flush with lid open as I like to inspect the bowl! Then close. Never get ill.

Meh. The lid is never down in our house. If it was I'd assume there was something unpleasant lying beneath.

I might swap the gin for vodka.

Lol.... I don't care as long as the seat is not wet when I sit on it....
DS never lifts it and piddles everywhere. ....
I keep toothbrush etc in a cupboard. ...

The lid of the loo should always be put down.

Puppy oh I know, I am horribly embarrassed I've taken to whispering warnings when people ask if they can use the bathroom!

I hate having the lid down. Then I have to touch it to lift it and don't know what lies beneath.

But my toilet is in a separate room from everything else anyway.

To start yet another thread on this.

To be a victim of the daft creeping germophobia (largely generated by advertising) that is enveloping us all.

To expect others to conform to a silly rule that have almost zero impact (the often-referenced in previous threads conclusion of Mythbusters was that since there's a gap, the effect of closing the lid is minimal.

Not to have more pressing things to to worry about (though I realise and accept the inherent irony in my suggesting this).

So, to sum up YAB(V)U

Although however small I am a believer that prevention is better than cure.

Get a cabinet or a covered over holder, saves on frustration and also on uncertainty when guests visit
