Could I get into trouble for this parking?

Inspired by the parking in a disabled bay thread but, to be clear, I did not park in a disabled bay, or anywhere illegal for that matter.

Parking near my work is very tricky so I choose to park a 10 minute walk away in a residential street with no restrictions. It's an average width street and, if there were no parked cars, 2 vehicles could pass each other easily. However, there are always a lot of parked cars so a fair amount of giving way is required.

This morning, I pulled into my usual spot and saw that a couple of cars had parked on the opposite side of the road, parallel with my car. I thought it looked a little tight but a quick assessment told me it was fine and other cars could still squeeze through. There was nowhere else to park so I left it.

When I returned to my car, another driver had to wait for me to open my door and climb in before she could pass (no room to pass with my door open). She gave me a filthy look as she passed and I just thought she was rather impatient. However, I then noticed a couple of blokes working further up the road in high vis jackets (not sure if they were from the council). As I went to pull away, one starting to walk purposely towards my car, I'm pretty sure he intended to speak to me. I was in a hurry and really didn't think I'd done anything wrong apart from some perhaps not ideal parking. I chose to pretend I hadn't seen him and drove off. As I passed the other man, he gave me a filthy stare.

I'm now worrying they might report me or, even worse, I might appear on facebook or one of those websites showing twattish parking. AIBU?

OP and anyone else that needs to park in residential streets......please park with consideration.

Yes, we all realise that it is a public highway.

I'm disabled. I have no off street parking. The times I struggle carrying shopping from my car to my home, and end up with a ruined few days because of the pain, is often because of inconsiderate parking.

If there is a space large enough for two cars, please don't park in the middle of it. Yes I'm talking to you, staff from the local solicitors.

More important than me, is the terminally ill lady who's patient transporter was wheeled down the street, simply because the ambulance couldn't get through.

Painting double yellow lines was the solution our Council came up with, if people just used common sense it/they wouldn't be needed. Even then, the job took longer because someone ignored the 'no parking' signs round the roundabout so they painted lines up to the car and had to come back to finish the job another day. I was hoping they'd tow it or paint over it.

QuintessentialShadow · 31/08/2016 19:08

There will probably be restrictions soon, when the residents cotton on to people like you coming to park for the day, probably while they are on the school run and come home to find nowhere to park near their homes.

Ameliablue · 31/08/2016 19:12

Navyandwhite not parking in such a way as to block emergency vehicles is implicit in every street whether there are any other parking restrictions or not.

Buzzardbird · 31/08/2016 19:18

A fire engine will take any means to get to an incident, but if the engine is damaged it has to be taken off the road and repaired at the tax payers expense. Selfishness costs more than lives.

TikTakTok · 31/08/2016 19:23

I think it sounds fine.

Please tell me that Parkinglikeacunt is a real site? Grin

Yeah OP not a great decision. Ambulance access would be more a concern than fire engines-fire crews will still get access on foot in a residential street but life saving equipment in an ambulance needs to be right at the patients house.

Buzzardbird · 31/08/2016 19:42

Yes Lello, there is also parkinglikeaknob or nob or whatever the current mis-spelling is.

FruitCider · 31/08/2016 19:43

Of course it's real Grin www.reddit.com/r/ParkingLikeACunt/

People do this in our village outside the local shop and while the road is passable for cars, anything bigger is stuck. The road is regularly used by tractors, the bus and occasionally emergency vehicles as we are near a fire station. Drivers of these vehicles have to either beep until the owner appears or get out and hunt for the owner. The bloody annoying thing is that there is a public car park (free) over the road. People are so lazy they can't be bothered to walk literally 20 or so extra steps -they would rather cause an obstruction Angry. You know you shouldn't really have parked there. It was a bad decision, but I wouldn't imagine you will get into trouble this time with no tickets or anything left on your car. You live and learn!

GerdaLovesLili · 31/08/2016 20:18

I wonder where all the cars locally would magically park if the council did put double yellows on the roads like that? Our local roads are pretty much undrive-able first thing in the morning and at the weekends when all of the residential cars and vans are parked (all perfectly legally). I live in the "white van" capital of the UK and it's not uncommon to have two vans parked (still legally) on opposite sides of quite narrow roads with no room for an ambulance or fire engine to pass. There really is nowhere else for them to park (not even ten minutes walk away and none of the houses have driveways or garages.) I've pretty much given up expecting the local residents to apply common sense to their parking (after all, where would they go?) and despair if I have to drive before 9.30 in the morning.

Hercules12 · 31/08/2016 20:20

My daughters school had open evening and she was a guide so I collected her part way through the evening. The roads were a nightmare with cars parking really badly and as I was making my way down a road a woman parked up so blocking my way through along with the cars behind me and cars coming opposite way. She was most indignant when I insisted she move her car otherwise we were all stuck!
She said everyone else was parking badly so therefore so could she. Some of the local residents came out and had a go at her re no emergency vehicles being able to get to their houses so she moved.
Surely common sense tells you to leave space for emergency vehicles.

Hopefully someone's reported you to the polive and you'll get a ticket in the post.

gonzo155 · 31/08/2016 20:48

Were the other cars on the street parked one opposite another? If so you've done nothing wrong. If you were the only car parked opposite another then you've caused and issue.

Ameliablue · 31/08/2016 21:07

So it's alright to park badly as long as others are too?

gonzo155 · 31/08/2016 21:50

No, if there are room for cars to park on both sides then it's not a problem, and no one would be targeting just the OP.

I live on a road where you can only park one side otherwise it's too narrow to get through easily. Hence people don't park opposite each other, this was what I was trying to describe.

Tiredtomybones · 31/08/2016 22:07

My face falls into a filthy look if I don't keep it in check. Maybe the lady who waited for you was the same and it wasn't deliberate.

AverysillyoldHector · 31/08/2016 22:13

It isnt just about emergency vehicles. We lived on a street where people would sometimes park on both sides and it was narrow enough to mean that we couldn't get our bins emptied if they did. So selfish.

Astoria797 · 31/08/2016 23:05

Mum's street is a bit like this with selfish idiots taking up all the street parking so they don't need to pay for parking in town. Local firemen have made something of an art form in knowing exactly how much to damage the knobs' cars without it coming back to them. Also, paramedics can report unsafe parking to the police & even make suggestions to councils to make streets permit only if they feel there's a particular danger to residents.

NotMe321 · 31/08/2016 23:25

Hopefully someone's reported you to the polive and you'll get a ticket in the post

How could she? There are no restrictions on parking in that road, so she did nothing illegal.

Hercules12 · 01/09/2016 08:39

The highway code is very clear re parking and blocking access for emergency vehicles.

Hercules12 · 01/09/2016 08:39

I'm a little confused to all the people who don't know that!
