To think going to Disney is a ridiculous indulgence?

Now, maybe i would feel differently if I could afford to go without completely skunk ring myself Grinbut as it stands, we can't and I can't help but think that spending such huge amounts on one holiday is crazy!

We watch Disney and enjoy it, and I'm well aware that it's people's money to spend how they like but I just can't help but think it's a silly wage of money? Anyone agree?

Curious - that something they got your dad hooked also got me hooked. And as I sit here on a cruise ship in the Port of Miami waiting to set sail all I can think about is this time next week I'll getting ready to go to Fantasmic. ❤️

With regards to the food, is there a reason that people are only talking about Disney

It could be something to do with the thread being about Disney.

ohdearme1958 · 04/09/2016 19:46

I have never wanted to go, my children have never wanted to go. We don't watch Disney

I'd never wanted to go either. But I have been to Eurodisney with my severely disabled son loads of times. It was as far as we could get him. But following the breakdown of my then 35 year marriage almost 3,5 years ago my brother and sister in law decided to take me to see Mickey Mouse in Florida as its where they go every year. It was food for my broken heart and very jaded soul. But truth be told I didn't really want to go because it just wasn't me. Well that's not quite true because it turned out I didn't know myself very well and it was indeed me - I love it. I go every year now. But I also do I other holidays as well and on the last year I've been away whale watching in Alaska on my own, as well as a 3 week trip the length of Itsly where it was art and history the whole way.

Ohdear - you are aware that it's not a prison? You can leave. That's why I asked the question, no real need for the snarky answer.

ohdearme1958 · 04/09/2016 20:12

Sorry user777 - I've no idea what you're talking about.

ohdearme1958 · 04/09/2016 20:14

Oh, now I do. I read back.

Am I aware Disney is not a prison?

Yes I am. Because like you we stay elsewhere.

user7755 · 04/09/2016 20:25

So why the snarky response?

ohdearme1958 · 04/09/2016 22:11

Have a nice day User

Or at least a better one than you seem to have been having up to now.

user7755 · 04/09/2016 22:43

Hmm... OK

mygorgeousmilo · 05/09/2016 18:27

Shockers I promise you, she'll love it in Paris, even my delightfully cynical husband got sucked in. Be sure to take a doctors letter or DLA letter or something so that she gets a pass to get straight on the rides without the queues

Shockers · 05/09/2016 19:52

I will, and thank you!

maninawomansworld01 · 05/09/2016 22:34

Surely anything is relative.
Some people have lots of money and don't think Disney is that expensive, some just love it and make other sacrifices in order to go.

I can't stand it and you couldn't pay me to go there but surely what people spend their holiday dosh on is up to them.

BabyGanoush · 06/09/2016 06:54

Theme parks and cruise ships...., my idea of hell!

Sugarcoma · 06/09/2016 07:12

I'm a Disney fan and drag DP there all the time - we don't have kids (hopefully soon) and joke that if we do have them we'll only take them to Disney once they can afford to pay for themselves! Otherwise we'll just send them a postcard haha. It is bloody expensive, having said that, there are ways of doing it for less. There's also a forum for Disney-obsessed Brits called The DIBB and on there you'll find a lot of people save for years to take their families to Disney. So they're already planning trips now for 2018 and beyond. Also, one of the things I absolutely love about a Disney holiday is it's almost a 100% stress free holiday when you're there and, like PinkSparkly, I personally cannot get my head around people who spend thousands just to sit on a beach. Have literally never been on a beach holiday!

MidniteScribbler · 06/09/2016 07:28

To each their own. I can't understand why anyone would choose to spend hours packing up the car and setting up a campsite and sleeping under a tent. Having to walk ages to go for a pee in the middle of the night. Sounds hideous. But people tell me they enjoy it, so as long as they don't try to drag me along, then why should I care?

ohdearme1958 · 06/09/2016 12:03

Theme parks and cruise ships...., my idea of hell!

That would be because one mans babyganoush is another mans poison.

ohdearme1958 · 06/09/2016 12:16

have literally never been on a beach holiday!

Nor have I. But then I'm not too keen on the sun or the beach even though I live in a very hot country right across the road from the beach. One of my best holidays ever was Whale watching in Alaska last year and a big part of that was the freezing cold weather.

And right now on the ship a huge part of it has been sitting on the balcony in the middle of the night listening to the thunder and watching the amazing Lightning.

Im very happy on holiday with what other people may say is awful weather because I live in the sun all year round and may not see rain from one year to the next.

shovetheholly · 06/09/2016 12:17

I don't understand why you'd pay ten quid to go there, let alone thousands. It's my idea of hell on earth. I see no magic at all in it. But then I really hate Disney.

rosesarered9 · 06/09/2016 14:39

Surely the point of holidays is to get a break from your life ie working so you could afford the holiday in the first place?

I've just looked and a two night stay for a family of four costs about £2500 at Christmas (it would be cheaper off peak obviously). Add £200 for Eurostar and taxis and it comes to about £3000 in total accounting for spending at gift shops, restaurants etc. That has to be better than a £7000 holiday in America when you have twice the fun (IME) at Disneyland.

Pisssssedofff · 06/09/2016 15:27

I fo think holidays are a massive con tbh, travelling is entirely different because it's about the journey not the destination

SienaSun · 06/09/2016 19:24

I've done lots of travelling and I don't think it's different at all.
It's just a long holiday Smile

Curious541 · 07/09/2016 16:44

roses - really you'd rather pay £3k for 2 nights then £7k for 14 nights?

Willow2016 · 07/09/2016 17:04

Horses for coures!

No way would I pay £3k for TWO nights anywhere. I spent about £7k in total for 14 nights in florida, direct flights, spending money, taxis, tickets, meals, kids spending money etc etc.

To me £3k for 2 nights is way to much but if you can afford it then thats your business. (your as in anyones)

Same as its my business as to what I spend on my holiday. Whether its whale watching (did have a look at that some years ago but couldnt afford it then Sad ) or Florida to go wild at the theme parks and suspend out imaginations for a while Smile

Next year will be a fraction of the cost and yet we will manage to have a great time, explore the local area and do our own thing too. Just glad we 'did it', I have been waiting donkeys years to be able to go to Universal! Smile

NickiFury · 07/09/2016 17:08

I've been on two Disney cruises and they are just brilliant. It's as Disney as you want it to be, there's a whole area of the ship that has very little Disney theming - champagne bar, sports bar, restaurant with menus created by Michelin starred chef etc.

Been to Florida and Paris and I have to say that I didn't enjoy Paris any less, it's smaller obviously but still magical and dd said Paris was better.

Park of preference for my children at their ages now though is Universal. Those rides are like being bang in the middle of a 3D movie. You ARE flying round Hogwarts. Parks in the UK just cannot compare to US parks.
