Gardening at 8am on a bank holiday!

PJBanana · 29/08/2016 13:42

I was out for a girls' weekend Sat/Sun, and was really looking forward to a massive lie in this morning. At 8am on the dot, I was woken up by a super loud hedge trimmer, followed by almost an hour of the same noise, plus lawn mowing etc Angry

Neighbours across the street had a gardener round. The noise wouldn't bother me at all, but the fact that it was at 8am - 9am on a bank holiday pissed me right off.

To make matters worse, the same neighbours have done this on the last few bank holidays. Every bank holiday Monday I can remember over the last year or so, they've had gardeners round really early in the morning.

I won't complain, as I feel a bit petty and hate confrontation with neighbours, but at the same time I'm really annoyed that my cherished bank holiday lie ins are constantly ruined by this. I don't know why, but I think being loud on a bank holiday Monday morning is even worse than being loud on a Sunday morning!

I think 8 am on a bank holiday is too early. Are you sure you can't mention it to your neighbours. You don't have to be confrontational or rude. If the gardener is there a few hours you would think he could do something quieter for the first couple of hours.

MitzyLeFrouf · 29/08/2016 14:53

If I was up at 8am to do a few hours gardening I'd do the quiet gardening until 9am before whizzing up the strimmers and the lawnmowers. To do otherwise is just just so unconsiderate.

mylaptopismylapdog · 29/08/2016 15:00

Summer seems to equal noise from gardening or building here which does get on my wick when it is early at the weekend. Just a thought but maybe in future you could wear earplugs on Bank Holiday Sundays.

RunnnyMummy · 29/08/2016 15:09

I work as a gardener and I don't use noisy machinery before 8am on week days or before 9am weekends or bank hols. I wouldn't like it myself so I don't inflict it on others. But it can be difficult if you have clients who want their grass mowed by a certain time/day.

3amEternal · 29/08/2016 15:29

Retiree next door had a power saw going at 8am this morning. We've had it all weekend. On top of it he has the radio up loud playing some Proms type music. Wouldn't mind but this is the man who tuts and moans every time at our gardener (once a month for 2 hours) cutting the hedges mid afternoon on a weekday.

ThatStewie · 29/08/2016 15:30

lots of people work shift work do this idea of8 am on a Sunday / bank holiday is fairly classist. You're assuming everyone works M-F 9-6 and actually get a bank holiday, it's just not true. Unless you never ever make any not se at all, policing other people's gardens is a bizarre

ExitPursuedBySpartacus · 29/08/2016 15:31

8am is practically the middle of the day.

idle bastards

PNGirl · 29/08/2016 15:34

Too early. I woke up at 8.30 today so would have been groggy to be woken. Nothing is so urgent that it can't wait until 9.

MyKidsHaveTakenMySanity · 29/08/2016 15:38

Surely 9am is the standard time for all that crap to start? 8am, particularly on a weekend or bank holiday would annoy me. Even my kids don't get up at 8am when they're off school/nursery and they have early bedtimes!

clare2307 · 29/08/2016 16:08

I think 8am is ok, although I can see why you are annoyed. Just the same as 8pm is ok, but it annoys me when our neighbour uses strimmer/lawnmower at that time when I'm trying to persuade our nocturnal baby to sleep!

MrsBertBibby · 29/08/2016 16:29

It's scorching hot, poor gardeners need to get an early start. We were outside at 8 today, shovelling earth, by 11 it was too hot to continue.

8 really isn't unreasonable.

MitzyLeFrouf · 29/08/2016 16:31

8 is an unreasonable to be using really noisy machinery on a bank holiday Monday.

It's hardly tropical by 9am!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 29/08/2016 16:31

I think 8am is fine and perhaps invest in some ear plugs?

WaitrosePigeon · 29/08/2016 16:32

If you know it's going to happen every bank holiday I would buy some good ear plugs for next time.

MitzyLeFrouf · 29/08/2016 16:33

I have earplugs in my ears for the mornings I know Orange marches are going to take place in Glasgow. Now that really is an annoying sound.

GunnyHighway · 29/08/2016 16:36

Go to Germany. You are banned by law from doing meeting your lawn or even putting your washing out on a Sunday/ bank holiday

Nanny0gg · 29/08/2016 16:38

I would have thought 9am is fine for Sundays and Bank Holidays.

8am possible for weekdays.

And sod buying earplugs! Talk to your neighbour!

bringbacksideburns · 29/08/2016 16:41

I think it's too early. And inconsiderate. 9.30 am is a perfectly reasonable time to switch on a lawn mower etc.

Maybe you could go the Passive aggressive route and stick a note through the door saying " Please could you wait until after 9am for any Gardening jobs in future at weekends and on Bank Holidays?
We would really appreciate it.
Many thanks."
Might do the trick?

JennyOnAPlate · 29/08/2016 16:44

I think it's too early. I don't let my dc play out in the garden til 10 on Sundays and bank holidays. We're always up by 7 but I know the neighbours like a lie in!

ItsNiceItsDifferentItsUnusual · 29/08/2016 16:55

Really surprised by the responses here! I think 8am on a BH is far too early. I'm an early riser but would never dream of ensuring everyone else was woken...

Sundays and Bank Holidays should be quiet until 9am I think. We had to cut our hedges last weekend and specifically chose the Saturday, and even then not until 10am.

ArmfulOfRoses · 29/08/2016 17:06

I think 8am is far too early too, not everyone works 9-5 and goes to bed at 10.
I work until around 2am, so by the time I've eaten, showered, and relaxed enough to drop off it's 3:30am at the earliest.

jellybeans · 29/08/2016 17:08

Yanbu it is very selfish.

Anicechocolatecake · 29/08/2016 17:13

I think it's pretty inconsiderate.

My next door neighbour is ocd. can I just draw your attention to the fact that ocd can be a serious, life-shattering mental illness. It isn't a synonym for tidy or organised or even anal

Well said Anice

suchafuss · 29/08/2016 18:19

Way way way too early! 10am should be the time that noisy activity starts. It really inconsiderate to start any earlier and i would be very pissed off if my NDN did this.
