Does anyone know if this is true? (Doggy bags)

Just had a lovely big roast at the local pub as a treat, and I couldn't finish it - one chicken leg left over. I asked the waitress if I could get it in a doggy bag/ foil to feed my dog later, and she said that they weren't allowed to because they didn't have a takeaway licence. Does anyone know if this is an actual law or if the chef was just being snobby? I've done some googling but can't spot an actual law, although this seems to be a bone of contention in a few countries and in Michelin restaurants (!)

Now wondering whether I could have just snuck it out in a napkin and managed to not get chicken juices all over my bag on the way home. Next time I'll add 'foil' to the tonnes of things I tend to keep in my handbag 'just in case'!

Haha I read the title of your post as 'Dodgy Bags' and thought is was about fake handbags!

We went to the Savoy for Christmas lunch and I was refused a doggy bag.

Only uncooked bones for dogs!

Nice one!

Doggy bag really means you're taking it home for the dog?! Shock Well you learn something new every day.

foxessocks · 29/08/2016 19:15

I used to work in a pub and we had to get customers to sign a disclaimer before they took food off the premises.

LaurieMarlow · 29/08/2016 19:19

I wouldn't go back to a place that refused me a doggy bag either. The unnecessary waste wouldn't sit right with me.

LittleLionMansMummy · 29/08/2016 19:20

I have never ever come across this normal had a problem. However it's funny your post has come up now because a friend of mine just posted of Facebook about something similar. She was out for lunch with her mum and apparently when they asked for a doggy bag they were made to sign some kind of disclaimer! Shock This was in the uk.

LittleLionMansMummy · 29/08/2016 19:21

nor had a problem

Wondering if they refused OP because they were offended that you said you were going to feed it to your dog rather than eat it yourself.

My DDs both have a tendency to do this and as far as I'm aware have never been refused, but then they never say they're going to feed it to the dog. I never give my dog leftovers so if I took anything home I'm definitely going to be the one eating it.

RhodaBorrocks · 29/08/2016 19:42

I've never had a problem asking for my leftovers to go. Admittedly the last few times have been at restaurants that also do takeaway, but my Mum taught me it could be done when I was a child - I used to have major stomach problems and couldn't eat a full meal in one seating until I was in my late teens. Even now, if restaurants won't let me order a child-sized or starter-sized portion then I can rarely eat everything and ask to take the rest home. Nowhere I've been has said no so far, but I wouldn't go back somewhere that wouldn't allow it - why return somewhere where I have to pay for food I can't eat?

Oh and the last time I had food poisoning it was from a dodgy prawn sandwich - from a hospital canteen!

That's where mine came from too! I remember it because I worked on a non-hospital organisation on the hospital site, so we often used their canteen for lunch. It caused me to have nearly a week off sick when I had been in the job for less than a month! Luckily employer was very understanding.
