A 4 month old baby can never sleep "too much"

Just that really!

My DD2 slept loads yesterday - 3 hours in the morning, 2 1/2 after lunch, another catnap at 4:30.

She slept through the night on Thursday and Friday night and DH was worried last night that she had napped too much and so wouldn't do it again. I said babies of this age can't ever nap "too much" and considering our other 2 were having crappy little half hour sleeps at this age, we should just be glad she sleeps!

I think he is going to start suggesting we wake her in the daytime (incidentally, she didn't sleep through last night; woke at 3) and I want to be able to assure hime that would be unreasonable!

If anyone took my post to be serious medical advice, and an absolute fact under literally all circumstances regardless of the health and wellbeing of the baby, please don't!!'

But some people do take these stock phrases as gospel. That's why I hate to hear them being banded about.

Right, well I hadn't considered anyone taking it as gospel so will be sure to disclaimer next time I bandy such things about.

For what it's worth I woke my own sleeping DD yesterday, she had tonsillitis and had fallen asleep cuddling up to DP, and I wanted to wake her to get her to eat some dinner before bedtime and give her medicine.

emz, sorry didn't mean to sound so harsh. I have worked as a breastfeeding counsellor for 15 years, often in areas of harsh economic deprivation ( my upbringing) . Mothers ( often young and sadly with low self esteem and voice) will find it difficult to find their own inner voice and judgement.
So apologies because of my personal slant.

So sorry about your DDs tonsillitis, it's a horrible thing, my DS suffered for years. I hope she is feeling better soon. XX

My mum was told this again and again by some idiot doctor when I was a baby. I would literally sleep all day and only wake for meals. Despite this, the Dr wouldn't order any investigations, sticking to the line that babies can never sleep too much. It wasn't until I was 28 that I was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect and got it mended. One of the first questions my cardiologist asked was 'did your mother ever say whether you slept a lot when you were a baby'.

Excessive sleeping shouldn't be Ignored.
