AIBU?

To think a volunteer shouldn't have them pay for the priveledged?

Through Cadets DCs have been asked to volunteer at the country show. This is a very commercialised show with fairground rides, stalls, burger vans etc.

The cadets have to arrive on Friday evening to help set up, marshall, litter pick and run errands on the day of the show and then help pack up on the Sunday morning. They will be worked hard but are looking forward to it and it will go towards D of E and their citizenship awards.

They are being asked to pay for their camping pitch and food and drink. AIBU to think they should be offered free camping and a few burgers or vouchers for food?

Yasnbu. However since the Olympics in 2012 the majority of UK volunteering opportunities have started to take the mickey.

The majority don't provide transport costs even when they want multiple training sessions before hand. During the event you'd be pushed for somewhere to store stuff/rest and I've seen some where the acknowledgement is a cup of tea and the tshirt you have to wear anyway as part of the risk assessment.

Take a look at the rugby world cup or prudential ride ts and cs it'll open your eyes.

Find out what deal the local YFC have (I assume they are also volunteering at the show) and ask for the same. Charging volunteers for camping is really tight. Food wise- not sure. I don't think the carparking and errand running helpers at our local show get meal vouchers, only the judges and stewards (ham salad, tea and buns in the show lunch tent run by the nice stalwart type ladies).

I am quite shocked at this also. My DD is an army cadet and has never been asked to partake in anything like this and has managed to obtain Bronze D of E through Cadets. I wouldn't be very happy.

The organisers would have to pay out quite a bit for a commercial organisation to provide these services. You need to ask the cadet supervisors why that hasn't been taken into account.

I run a cadet unit, and if my unit was asked to help out at an event I would not expect to pay to do it. Small events (a couple of hours) I would do for nothing as publicity is good, but for a event as described I would expect free food or a contribution to the unit from the organisers. If they asked us for money I would tell them to jog on!

I would be inclined to get them to email the organisers saying they would have been happy to volunteer their time, but having seen the cost of pitch and food, they now realise they can't afford to help

This!!

I think they're taking the p!
