To think ghost busters didn't need men?

It's a really good film. It wasn't lacking because of no menz. I'm sadly not that surprised about the backlash from the male half of society but why do they care so much?

The racist backlash against Leslie Jones is completely vile as well. She's obviously committed the cardinal sins of being successful, funny, female and black.

The film was hilarious, it really didn't need male main characters. Nothing was missing. Maybe it's that that's hurting a certain type of man's psyche and why they can't get over a great film without them playing a central role.

I didn't like the caricature of the black female if I'm honest.

However she really liked her part.

I loved it too. (Especially Melissa Metcalfe:) ) I took my 6yo DD ( very hardy due to having two older brothers, not afraid of ghosts) with 14 yo DS......we all loved it and DD has been firing her imaginary proton pack all summer.

ChocolateFuzz · 25/08/2016 15:33

I haven't seen it but many reviews I've seen didn't have a problem with the female cast they just thought it was a poorly made movie with bad jokes trying to cash in on people's nostalgia for the original

It's on par with Ghostbusters 2, no masterpeice but certainly wasn't terrible.

Even if it followed on from the original movies they would have introduced a new cast, so it would have been similar regardless.

SheDoneAlreadyDoneHadHerses · 25/08/2016 15:48

Yeah, I didn't really find it funny tbh. It's great to see a movie with actual normal women in it and the best bit was the Power of Pattie Compels You but not for me.

I don't find Melissa McCarthy funny though (although the outtake from This Is 40 when she's in the principle's office is bloody hilarious)

TiggyOBE · 25/08/2016 15:50

It's not the cast I object to. It's the whole craze for "rebooting" films. Why couldn't the film have been about 4 women taking over from the now elderly original Ghostbusters?

No I haven't seen it. I'm sulking at the thought of it.

SheDoneAlreadyDoneHadHerses · 25/08/2016 15:52

Honestly, it's all ad-libbed and just brilliant.

IWouldLikeToSeeTheseMangoes · 25/08/2016 15:54

I don't care about the male vs female debate it just looks terrible. And I resent it riding the coat tails of the original franchise and shitting all over it for cash. Lazy film making. Has Hollywood just run out of ideas then and from now on all we're going to see is badly executed "re-booted" (UGHH) versions of films? Depressing stuff.

Jasonandyawegunorts · 25/08/2016 15:57

Why couldn't the film have been about 4 women taking over from the now elderly original Ghostbusters?

Because Harold Ramis Is dead, Bill Murray didn't want to play Venkman unless he died in the movie and becuase a ghost, Rick Morrains doesn't do acting since his wife died and Ernie Hudson was hardly in the original movies and Dan Aykroyd gets days where he is so paronoid he doesn't turn up on set.

IWouldLikeToSeeTheseMangoes · 25/08/2016 15:58

shedone watched that recently hilarious Grin Also like the argument with Paul Rudd - "you touched my nipple" Grin

TheHiphopopotamus · 25/08/2016 15:59

I agree about rebooting films, tbh. It like there hasn't been an original idea in Hollywood for the last 10 years.

What really gets my goat though, is the superhero reboots. They've just been remaking the same Spider-Man and Batman 'origin' films but with different actors for the last 15 years.

Still enjoyed Ghostbusters though. And I can't wait for the Wonderwoman film.

SheDoneAlreadyDoneHadHerses · 25/08/2016 16:02

Mangoes She's brilliant in that film, not so much in Ghostbusters.

But I might be biased as I HATE reboots.

They're rebooting IT. I mean WHY?? AND Mary Poppins Angry

HerRoyalNotness · 25/08/2016 16:04

Yes I'd have preferred if the story line was new, they could have had them as their daughters taking over the business. Perhaps cleaning out after a bereavement and finding references to the fire station and the technology etc.... And then started it all up again

IWouldLikeToSeeTheseMangoes · 25/08/2016 16:04

Same here!! I heard they were doing this with Dirty Dancing too wtf? !Sad Hoping I imagined this news. Just totally uncalled for.

Jasonandyawegunorts · 25/08/2016 16:05

I hope Tim Curry has a cameo in IT, i realize it's hard now he's had his stroke, but he's Tim Curry!

He has a cameo in the Rocky Horror remake.

HerRoyalNotness · 25/08/2016 16:06

Re Spiderman, apparently the studio has to keep making the films otherwise they lose the rights to it, or so DH tells me. Most likely the same for a lot of the superhero ones they do over and over again.

ChocolateFuzz · 25/08/2016 16:12

I have watched the trailer and the CGI is badly done

MoonriseKingdom · 25/08/2016 16:13

Jason thanks for mentioning about Rick Moranis. He's just perfect for those nerdy roles - love Spaceballs. I had no idea he stopped acting for such a sad reason.

I haven't seen the remake but the original is a really good film. I love almost anything with Bill Murray in though. I feel reluctant to see the current one as so often remakes/ reboots are terrible and the reviews are not great. I do like Melissa McCarthy - Spy was great fun.

RandyMagnum · 25/08/2016 16:15

Haven't seen it, I'd rather shit in my hand and clap than voluntarily sit through another Melissa McCarthy movie where she plays a carbon copy of every other character she's ever played. Also not impressed with the way Sony behaved with the deletion of many constructive criticisms on their youtube trailers but purposefully left in all the sexist mysognistic comments to try and prove a point, then there's the childish comments made from Melissia McCarthy and Paul Feig about people who disagreed with the making of the movie.

TheNaze73 · 25/08/2016 16:39

randy You've done well to avoid it. It was utter shit & two hours of my life I won't get back.

NotCitrus · 25/08/2016 16:57

I loved it! Unlike so many reboots, there was a point to it - how people would react to a bunch of women setting up as ghost removal services compared to the reactions the originals got.

I thought it was way funnier than the original without the unnerving sexism.

The trailers didn't do it justice - I wasn't going to see it until some movie-loving friends told me I should.

Dozer · 25/08/2016 18:25

Grin @ bill Murray didn't want to play Venkman unless he died in the movie and became a ghost

Dozer · 25/08/2016 18:25

Didn't know that about rick moranis. Sad. Great comic actor.

Wizzysmum1 · 25/08/2016 18:40

Agree with herroyalnotness - film needed something like that as it was dreadful!!

Not funny at all and am sure they are great actresses but was very disappointing.

DullUserName · 25/08/2016 18:42

Took teen (queer) DD to see it ... we both LOVED it. It was so funny throughout. Loved how they worked Chris Hemsworth's character, and they clearly all had a blast making it. Fab cameos from the original cast too :-)
