To associate Ryvita with the 80s?

I don't know whether the proper plural for 'Ryvita' is Ryvitas or 'Ryvitae' - (goes to sit in pedantry corner)... but that could be the start of a whole new thread!!

Anyway, in the 80s when as a 12 yr old I'd already started dieting (I know) it seemed as if Ryvita as a foodstuff had a much higher profile. To give the context of the time - circa 1985 - back then the F - Plan diet was in vogue and Atkins and the 5-2 diet, low carbing had barely been heard of.

Nowadays, this food seems to be hardly on anyones radar and it might be just me, but it seems to have wholly slipped out of fashion. Back then it was the go - to food of any dieter....

I'm also an 80s child like theimpossiblegirl, and I and most of my female colleagues of similar age love them. Dark Rye with margarine and marmite with a bowl of tomato soup in winter for lunch.

Or, with salmon and avocado. Or cheese and marmite. Yum.

hollinhurst84 · 24/08/2016 18:36

Melba toast is another thing you don't see as much. And the other ones, thicker than melba toast. Can't remember the name

MitzyLeFrouf · 24/08/2016 18:55

And whatever happened to carob?

That awful stuff spent most of the 80s masquerading as chocolate.

notagiraffe · 24/08/2016 18:57

I love Ryvita. But can eat 8 in a go with butter and marmite, so not exactly slimming. Much prefer them to bread, so have them most lunchtimes. Dark rye or multi seed.

notagiraffe · 24/08/2016 18:58

Mitzy - it died a shameful death, just as it should. never forgiven the lentil weaving mothers for palming carob brownies off on us, pretending they tasted the same as chocolate

MitzyLeFrouf · 24/08/2016 19:04

Good riddance to it giraffe! Funnily enough it was my friend's lentil weaving mother who was always trying to persuade us it was oh so yummy. Lunch at their house was an endurance sport Grin

I love Ryvita, especially the sesame ones, and always have a pack in my desk drawer at work as an easy lunch (with cottage cheese...can you say stuck in the 80s? Grin )

We used to have really really thin ryvitas. They were plain and smooth not seeded or anything and they were amazing. Used to break when you buttered them without fail.

They sound like Finn Crisp, which I love even more than Ryvita. Hard to find, but luckily (for me) the health food shop on the corner sells them.

tinsheddy · 24/08/2016 19:24

Mitzy I remember carob as well OMG blast from the past!!

Gosh learning a lot on here. As a PP has said I remember all too well ryvita with cottage cheese and grapefruit! They even had a grapefruit cottage cheese!! That's where I drew the line!!

FinnCrisp is much nicer imo than Ryvita. I get mine from Booths. It's my staple low carb carb. I only like the Original kind.

P1nkP0ppy · 24/08/2016 19:30

Finn Crisp can be bought in Tesco and Sainsburys Page, I bought some last week (I prefer them too 😋)

Footle · 24/08/2016 19:32

Is anyone old enough to remember Energen rolls, a bread substitute that my diabetic grandfather was told to eat ? The texture reminded me of Bronco lavatory paper, also a feature of my grandparents' house. Probably tasted similar too.

P1nkP0ppy · 24/08/2016 19:37

Oooh yes Footle, weirdly like eating polystyrene I imagine.

Alconleigh · 24/08/2016 19:39

I love a ryvo. Just had 4 with avocado and hummus. Delicious.

PageStillNotFound404 · 24/08/2016 19:45

Good to know, P1nkP0ppy, thanks. Our local Tesco definitely doesn't have them but I shall keep an eye out next time I'm in Sainsburys.

And the other ones, thicker than melba toast. Can't remember the name

French toasts? Round and dry as sticks?

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 24/08/2016 19:58

oh gosh yes I love ryvita, topped with low low cheese spread, a tomato and a sliced egg with a thin slice of ham on top. I also use to love those round crispbread things that were like unsweetened rusks, just seen they still sell them so have added to my asda shop for tomorrow.

Trills · 24/08/2016 20:24

The sesame ones are nice and don't go soft too easily (unlike most other crackers).

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 24/08/2016 20:44

I associate ryvita with my granddad he loved them and would eat them most nights for supper with cheese and pickled shallots (he had dinner at lunch time)

I eat the same for a late dinner sometimes and ds loves ryvita too

Good for low carbing. We often don't have bread in but always ryvita, crackers and oat cakes.

IKEA do a massive rye cracker it's the size of a pizza Grin

I like the dark rye ryvita best and the round rye crackers

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 24/08/2016 20:45

And I like when they have been wrapped in tin foil and go soft and chewy

Footle · 24/08/2016 22:01

Poppy, glad I'm not alone with the Energen.
The Finn Crisps I like are the long thin ones, but they also come in a fatter round version.
