AIBU to think my arm was bloody mutilated??

I finally had my implant removed from my arm tonight after 2 months of back and forth with GP's and the clinic :( for anyone who has one, make bloody sure you can feel it through your skin at all times and when you go to have it taken out, make sure you can show them exactly where it is!!

So I went to my GP to have it removed but he couldn't find it, fair enough I was then referred to a special clinic that take them out all the time after a scan. I had my appointment 2 weeks later.

They found the implant on the scan and made a big incision that needed 5 stitches in the end, but in the process of digging around in my arm for it with her fingers, the implant snapped and dug itself deep into My muscle around the other side of my arm Sad I could feel it and it hurt but when I said I thought she'd pushed it further in and round my arm she said that wasn't possible... Hmm

She gave up trying to find it, stitched me up and said I'd have to have it removed under General anesthetic so she would write to my GP and explain...

A week later I get a phone call from the same doctor who said I should go back to the clinic a couple of weeks later to have it removed by her mentor, who was apparently more experienced Hmm

Anyway, fast forward to tonight and she scanned my arm again and couldn't find the pieces of implant, but I told her I could now feel them around my elbow... She scanned and there they were in the muscle around my elbow (GRIM).

The picture is where she was first digging around (the scar) vs where the pieces of implant finally came out of my arm (the dressing)

My arm is really swollen and sore and I now have 2 1 inch scars that I'll have for life...

I'm not sure how to feel about all this... It's bad right??

I've got one big scar from having an implant removed. Two seems ridiculous. It sounds like you've had a bit of a nightmare really.

Mine was a total nightmare to remove. I only had it in 6 months. You can barely see the scar now. Only if you look really hard.

I was told that taking them out can be difficult, very clearly though and was in my leaflet. So I expected it.

Must be awful if you weren't. It's not pleasant at all.

I'm feeling very sorry for myself tonight because it hurts and I'm feeling wounded, not sure whether being outraged is because of that or because I feel homely have something to complain about if that makes sense??

Oh my goodness that is terrible!!

Could you feel it before they took it out?

Maybe try bio oil to see if the marks fade, they may do over time, I hope your not in any pain at the moment, rest and eat chocolate!

I couldn't before the first time she went digging for it, but after she pushed it round and it snapped I could feel it every time I straightened my arm grinning against the muscle :( then when I told her this tonight she was really dismissive as if it wasn't possible that it was in my elbow... Well it bloody was!

Yanbu. To be honest I'd never had an implant or coil or anything like that.

ParisienneRose yes! She was really flippant when I told her it was in my elbow, like I was imagining it Hmm

When her mentor pulled the bloody thing out in pieces from around my elbow joint she at least had the decency to look a bit sheepish!

I have often thought about how much easier an implant is than the Pill but after reading this I have changed my mind.

I frequently for and remove implants (I'm a GP) and it sounds as though it was badly fitted - they should be very superficial as they are so difficult to remove if too deep. Although it is usually the case that the arm will be badly bruised after a simple removal, it sounds as though you have had a dreadful experience. I would want to know was the fitter appropriately qualified and up to date - it is desirable (but not essential) to have a certificate known as LOC (letter of competence) in sub dermal contraceptive implants. This requires recertification every 5 years. Sorry you had such a bad experience. This is definitely not the norm as it is usually a very straightforward procedure.

You've been really unlucky. For context, I have been fitting implants for 11 years and at one point I was doing 1-2 a week, so I have done hundreds. I have only had to refer one to be removed at a specialist clinic under ultrasound, and that was because the woman had put on a huge amount of weight and the fat was on top of the implant.

I am absolutely scared shitless about having mine removed/replaced. A friend looked like she had been mauled by a wild dog rather than had a medical procedure, she was bandaged up and that but bled through it all by the time she got home and it just looked horrendous :S
