to leave the house while cooking a chicken in the oven?

Sorry this is so dull.

I've just put a chicken in the oven but ds is bugging me to take him to the park. I can see our house very clearly from the park so feel ok about being able to react to a fire etc.
Mentioned it to dh and he thinks I'm crazy and need to be in the house to supervise the chicken.

Who is BU?

Go to the park. I often do slow roast pork on a Sunday, wack it on and go out all day.

dowhatnow · 23/08/2016 15:45

I'd do it.

HuskyLover1 · 23/08/2016 15:46

Of course you don't have to stay in! Put it in the oven, cover with foil so it won't spit any fat, and then go to the park!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 23/08/2016 15:50

Why doesn't your DH take DS to the park while you watch TV 'supervise' the chicken?

AppleSetsSail · 23/08/2016 15:52

Eek, I had never considered the possibility of the dog deciding to change the temperature on the oven! Another thing for me to worry about.

Other than this, your husband is being excessively cautious. Mind you there are people on MN who won't leave the house with the dryer running.

HornyTortoise · 23/08/2016 15:54

I used to leave beef and such in the oven all day and go out. Never had an issue, though it was always on a low temperature so that it was all nice and falling apart once cooked

allthecarbs · 23/08/2016 15:56

Well we went to the park and no one died (apart from the chicken). Did feel a bit nervous though and kept peering over to see if there was any plumes of black smoke.

I've never given it a second thought before Blush

I can honestly say I have never considered it to be an issue to not leave the house when an appliance is on, if I had to supervise the oven/washing machine/dishwasher I would never get to work or get out the house on my day off, what happens if you do a slow roast joint, or a casserole ? I have even gone out and left stuff cooking on the hob it did stick a bit .

He can't watch them as he's 140 miles away!

Tell you what though, the crispy chicken skin that was waiting for me was awesome

Cook's prerogative to nab the skin, same with the burnt bits!

We told you it would be fine! Smile

ElodieS · 23/08/2016 16:09

Yum, bet it was delicious!

I leave food in the oven and pop out all the time, DH irrationally hates it too but it's one of my few efficient habits!

BlueFolly · 23/08/2016 16:13

When someone is being adamant but is wrong then it's really not good to get into a habit of indulging them.

This

Boogers · 23/08/2016 16:20

Especially when they're 140 miles away. What he doesn't know won't hurt him! Wink

As far as my children are aware, roast chicken doesn't have skin Grin

BestZebbie · 23/08/2016 16:55

I wouldn't, but I rarely bake anything that takes longer than 40 mins in the oven - and I would go out into the garden or onto the drive to quickly fetch something in that time (but not to eg: sit out on the lawn).

If it is on a fairly low heat for three hours, or similar, I think you'd be fine at the local park - just don't forget about it and decide to pop into town from there. :-) (Or more worryingly, if your DC has an accident and gets rushed off in an ambulance, you still need to turn the oven off before going with, which might be awkward - so bring your phone in case you need to contact your DH)
