To not book the hotel till the day before or even on the day?

I'm going on holiday in September, long haul. I've provisionally booked a hotel, pay on arrival. However I have been doing a lot of research, every day in fact and many really nice hotels in this city drop their prices substantially the day before, even more actually on the day. For the past three months there's never not been a hotel that would suit us available on these sites. I really want to just wait and then book somewhere on arrival through one of the late booking sites and pay a lot less. Only need it for one night.

Would you do this? Have you? Did it work out ok?

Thanks Smile

I often do this - book a hotel that can be cancelled a short time before arrival but keep looking for a better deal. If I find a better deal I cancel as per the cancellation policy for no penalty. I've booked a room online at a discount rate in the same hotel and then cancelled the original higher cost room!

We did this in Disneyland Paris. We were at a campsite nearby-ish for the week but fancied an extra night in Disney. Waited until we were eating lunch in the middle of the day and booked Disney hotel then, got it for way cheaper. Had nothing come up we would have decided at the time between paying full price or going back to the camp site. I think we did this another time for a different theme park in France too. If you're fairly confident about availability go for it?

I'd recommend Hotels.com - you get a free night after you've booked 10 nights through them.

Oh we had a great time coconutty, managed to fit loads in mainly via the 100 bus route. We were staying right near KaDeWe so went in there each day for a hot chocolate in the Chocolate cafe in the food hall. That food hall is something else isn't it? Saw quite a few main sights really, Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag, Schloss Bellevue, the memorials in and around the Tiergarten.

Would definitely go back as didn't make it to the museums or checkpoint Charlie. Glad you enjoyed too Smile
