To think that if my Facebook "friends" really cared about Breast Cancer Awareness they would have liked & shared my status?

My feed is full of these obscure 'I'm getting married/going on Masterchef/using my boobs to get out of a speeding ticket statuses" at the moment that are supposed to be raising awareness of breast cancer. You like & comment thinking the status is real then you get sent a PM asking you to do the same.

The very first time this went around years ago with the bra colours it was unique & a bit humourous but it's getting ridiculous now.

So I posted a status stating I'm not getting married & I quite like wearing underwear but I was paying a link to a website showing you how to check your breasts for lumps etc.

So far not one person has liked, commented or shared. If they really cared about raising awareness surely they would promote this and the importance of recognising the early symptoms etc?

One of my FB friends is currently doing 22 days worth of 22 press ups. Not really sure what it's for as I scroll past each day.

Seems to consist of her posing and shoving flappy tits towards the camera.

As I recall lots of people did the Ice challenge for the attention and "forgot" to donate to the cause

As for what it was for it doesn't help the Americans have a different name for Motor Neuron Disease or that as a previous poster pointed out the ice bucket challenge is nothing like having the disease, just as shaving your head to raise money for cancer is nothing like forcing yourself to do it because it will come out anyway or pulling out great clumps whilst you feel like shit from the medicine being used to make you better.

Ice bucket was for motor neurone disease. I remember distinctly. The theatre videos were extra funny because they had access to lots of ice from the bars.

I get where you're coming from, OP. Personally I never share anything like that, but there are plenty of people who do - it does seem a bit of a double standard if they post the vague stuff but not the stuff that's actually helpful.

I wouldn't get too worked up about it though. Hopefully your post might have prompted someone to check themselves or do some research.

I fucking hate breast cancer 'awareness' for many reasons. FWIW I have a family history of BC and a higher risk before I am flamed.

  • Women are more likely to die of heart disease, lung cancer and bowel cancer - how many of us are aware of that?
  • Who isn't 'aware' of BC these days? And who is aware that 90% of lumps and changes in your breasts are benign? Ensuring women get those checked out - fine. Terrifying women needlessly - not so much.
  • Focus on young women when they are least likely to be affected. So we have generations of young women who are terrified of breast changes and a disease that is very unlikely to affect them and generations of older women who are not getting the focus they need.
  • There are 10+ different types of breast cancers - and they have different prognosis and different symptoms
  • Horrible girliness and pinkification

The press ups is to raise awareness of ex servicemen committing suicide (22 per day) the only people I know doing it are people into fitness.
I don't usually watch the videos but I did find ds's hockey coach video quite moving as he did his final day I front of the war memorial then at the end instead of a cheesy thumbs up he stood in silence & saluted the memorial.

I scroll past all that shit.

All does my head in. I'm finding the 'my mom says I won't get likes cause I'm not beautiful' ones particularly foul at the moment.

Trufflethewuffle · 21/08/2016 13:55

Thanks balletgirlmum, I've just been back and looked and yes that's the one.
However, this particular person is positioning herself so that the camera gawps straight down her ample cleavage. She does loads of posing and pouting beforehand.
I guess I'm not really sure what this "raising awareness" actually achieves if nothing else is changing.

MissElizaBennettsBookmark · 21/08/2016 14:04

Any status update requiring me to publicly declare my awareness of or sympathy to ANY cause gets immediately hidden and the poster goes in the Cunt Book.

Wheras the person doing it on my Facebook feed was also involved in a charity sports tournament raising money to support ex servicemen & women.

If you want to do something about an issue don't fb obsess it. Use social media but don't let it use you. It's just a tool it's not action.
