AIBU?

WIBU to shout at this girl?

Was driving along a busy road - 40mph limit was doing about 30 as trafficy.
Younger woman, 19 stepped out in the road with headphone in and glued to her phone and ran across the road.
I had to emergency stop to avoid hitting her and the car behind went smack into me. The other car saw her step out and weren't mad they said they of done the same and couldn't believe I didn't hit her.

I had my very young baby twins in the back of my car (who are fine we've been checked) but I told the girl how stupid she had been and how careless she was and lucky she didn't cause a worse accident.
I did raise my voice I was so angry and shook up and worried.

She said it was inappropriate for me to shout at her as she's only 19 and still a child.
I said if she classes herself as a child and can't take responsibility for her actions and acts so carelessly she shouldn't be out without a chaperone (I know that's not the case but she wanted to play the child card)

She then told me to fuck off and walked off, glued to her phone and plugged her headphones back in.

I'm only 23 so not like a much older woman yelling at a kid.

WIBU?

Yanbu. My dd is 12, and if she did that I would be fully supportive of you shouting, firstly to emphasise how careless she was, and how much danger she was in, and secondly because she would need to acknowledge her actions scared you too.

Glad you're all ok op, and hopefully it scared her enough to be more careful in future.

I don't think ywu to shout. I imagine you would have been very shaken up after your babies being put in danger like that.

Next time you see her, accelerate!

19, she's not a child!!
She's bloody lucky you were able to stop. I've ripped into my 6 year old for stepping into a road, and he is a child!!!

Thank goodness everyone was ok, hopefully she'll look next time.

I would have felt like running her over. Entitled bitch.

19 a child. !!!!!!!. The fucking stupid idiot. I'm sorry I'd have laughed at that.
Even if she were a child. I'd probably raise my voice for such irresponsibility.
If she doesn't like being shouted at like the precious snowflake she seemingly acts like. I have the simplest solution. Take your ear phones out abd give the road your full attention. Arsehole

Some people seem to lose all awareness of their surroundings when plugged into their phone.
I'm fed up of people walking along texting /reading their phones and expecting me to dodge round them cos they can't be arsed to watch where they're going.
I've had a teenager step off kerb into road in front of me, glued to their phone.
Thankfully I was aware of them and was prepared for them to do something stupid.

Actually OP, I don't think shouting in those circs is even a question of reasonable or unreasonable; it's a function of the shock.

I had to emergency stop to avoid hitting her and the car behind went smack into me.

Did you get angry at the person driving the car behind too? They failed to leave a safe enough stopping distance.

YANBU - I myself am so, so sick of irresponsible twats with headphones in walking across roads without even looking. 19 is definitely not a child.

You weren't unreasonable at all! She's old enough to be using that language, she's old enough to be yelled at. She caused the accident and if she'd spoken to me like that I'd have been tempted to grab the phone and the headphones off her and she'd have been picking them up in pieces from across the street

YADNBU!!!

I would have seen red if that was her response to causing an accident, especially where my DCs were involved!

IMHO you were VERY reserved, I pm nit a violent person at all, but I would have flipped & had her by the scruff of her neck until she apologised and have done in the past in similar curcumstances

I'm also 200 and get so bloody annoyed with this. It's not even just kids, it's people in their 20s as well - just walking right across the road in front of me without looking! THERE'S A FUCKING CAR COMING! Why have they not learned about looking out for cars when you cross the road!? It's just soooooo entitled - uh why bother looking, it's your job to just screech to a halt Hmm

Sorry you had such a shock OP, I would have shouted too.

My, what a detailed conversation you had with the careless girl.

I'd be annoyed with her but more annoyed with the driver who smacked into the back of me. How very nice of them not to be mad at you. Did you not ask them why you managed to stop in time but they didn't?

After all, it was their inattention that could have endangered your twin babies, just as much as the girl.

OnionKnight · 20/08/2016 15:52

I would have taken her picture and posted it on Facebook.

I can't believe she pulled the child card! FFS. I'd have taken that as my cue to take her phone off her & call her parents.

STUPID STUPID fucking idiot - call her what you like. She's certainly ACTING like child - a spoilt, stupid one at that.

I'd gave taken a photo, & called the police too.

The woman behind you wasn't 'being nice'. She had NO RIGHT to be mad anyway as she was clearly following too close because she hit you, she should have been able to stop too, as you did.

I'm glad you & the babies are ok 💐

You were very restrained, well done! Silly bint. I would have gone equally ,ad at idiot who smacked into you: why was he/she so close?

Was she playing Pokemon Go?

Report

Yup, I'm dying to hear what you said to the driver that went into the back of you?

Andbabymakesthree · 20/08/2016 16:08

You need to replace your car seats too unfortunately.

The girl was completely irresponsible.

Report
Aeroflotgirl · 20/08/2016 16:09

Omg some of the young nowadays, want the rights and no responsibilities. Unfortunately there are many others like her, who take no responsibility, and want to be babied. Good on you, I would have done the same!

Report
mrsfuzzy · 20/08/2016 16:10

does it really matter if you called her a girl, lad or a bloke i would call her a twunt and shove her headphones along with the pc crap where the mice won't get them Grin

RepentAtLeisure · 20/08/2016 16:11

19 and still a child, what a little shit! Grin

You did nothing wrong OP. But don't try to track her family down as she probably got that snowflake terminology from them.

Report
Justwanttoweeinpeace · 20/08/2016 16:16

Nope. She deserved every word. Let's hope the next car she wanders in front of also stops in time.
