AIBU to say that it's God Save The Queen

Not God Save Our Queen?

This drives me mad at sporting events in general, so is concentrated at the moment with all that pesky winning at the Olympics, but I'm really dismayed at how few people seem to know the words to the National Anthem. It seems that say our gracious queen, our noble queen confuses people because they then don't sing the queen in the third and last lines.

I appreciate I'm being a grumpy wotsit but AIBU to think if you're going to sing the national anthem at least get the words right.

I would much prefer 'Flower of Scotland', 'Scotland the Brave' or 'Highland Cathedral'. I don't know the words to God Save the Queen either.

Rubbish anthem and unacceptable sentiment for athiest republicans.

VeryBitchyRestingFace · 20/08/2016 18:16

I had to go and Youtube 'Highland Cathedral'.

Don't think I've ever heard it.

malmi · 20/08/2016 18:32

You don't hear it played very often but I always find Lichtenstein's anthem to have a lovely tune.

LucyLucyLou · 20/08/2016 18:36

Some Scotland football supporters didn't like it at Hampden a few years back though malmi!

redexpat · 20/08/2016 18:53

I do know the words because we had to practise them at Brownies one year, and learn the second verse, which apparantly is actually the 3rd verse. I was the only one that did Halo

But yes it is a bit rubbish as anthems go isnt it? The USA one is actually quite hard to sing. I like the French one.

dementedma · 20/08/2016 18:55

It's sung at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo every night. In Scotland.

We've sung it at the telly a few times this week - in Scotland!

wowfudge · 20/08/2016 19:29

It has a distinctive tune - maybe just scrap the lyrics? The Spanish national anthem, for example, has no words.

Littleallovertheshop · 20/08/2016 19:33

But several lines do contain "God save our Queen"...?

Also, Highland Cathedral is hardly patriotic - it was written in the 50's and not by a Scot. It's highly over played nowadays - they trialled it as a national anthem (with made up words) at Murrayfield 10 years ago or so and it flopped.

An aside - but has anyone noticed how the Spanish national anthem is uncannily like the theme to blackadder? I follow motogp and the Spanish riders usually win so hear it week in week out.

Donatellalymanmoss · 20/08/2016 19:40

I really don't like it either, also a British republican.

If I ever won a gold medal in the Olympics I wouldn't sing along.

malmi · 20/08/2016 19:58

Littleallovertheshop, no lines contain 'God Save Our Queen'

Littleallovertheshop · 20/08/2016 20:02

But they do contain "God save our gracious/knoble Queen". So there is an our in there several times.

It's a racist dirge. Taking out a few lines about rushing Scots doesn't stop it being racist. Time for a new tune.

MagicalHamSandwich · 20/08/2016 20:11

The anthem is horrible anyway - especially the second (third?) verse. The one with God being asked to meddle in world politics on behalf of Britain. Now, I'm an atheist (and a republican, for that matter), but surely if there was a God it's be a bit petty for a deity to play favourites with nation states. That's just silly!

CooeeOnlyMe · 20/08/2016 20:27

WeAllHaveWings · 20/08/2016 20:27

possibly controversial, now that's an understatement. Its about Britain (England and Wales) crushing Scotland and Scots are expected to accept it as an national anthem Confused
