I have a condition that means I take a lot of painkillers, I have 2 types, codiene for when it's not too bad and tramadol for when it's really bad.

A friend of dp has told him he can't work atm because he has hurt himself, 0 hour contract so no money, dr won't give him anything strong enough so he's having to buy tramadol off a friend but he's running low.

Dp told him I have an emergency stockpile of those ( to tide me over until I get a new prescription when it's bad) that I'm not using and I have them on repeat prescription no questions asked and I know all about pain so would t charge him

I've said no. Apart from it being illegal dp is a bit naive whereas I've been around addicts and to me this screams addiction/drug abuse and he was chancing it knowing about my condition.

He thinks I'm over reacting and the poor guy can't feed his family Hmm

Not unreasonable. My doctor prescribed tramadol pretty easily when I had a severe ear infection. If it's not being prescribed, there's a reason for it...

MammaTJ · 20/08/2016 01:05

Noooo,. the only friend I share my meds with is a friend on the same ones, who has forgotten to order in time and pays me back when she gets hers.

No way would I be selling them to someone not prescribed them, that really is akin to being a drug dealer. Are you happy to go down that road?

OnceThereWasThisGirlWho · 20/08/2016 01:13

(In agony from endometriosis pain and ongoing fuckup with GP refusing to prescribe consultant recommended tramadol) Grin
YANBU

DefinitelyNotAJourno · 20/08/2016 01:18

Don't even think about it... Tramadol is a controlled substance, and possession without a prescription is a criminal offence.

DementedUnicorn · 20/08/2016 01:19

A whole fuck ton of no! If his GP ain't giving him Tramadol it's for a good reason.

UnderseaPineapple · 20/08/2016 01:21

That is why people want the prescription type instead of the OTC type, not usually because it is free.

Also they are too lazy to separate the codeine from the paracetamol. Easy enough to do. Tsk, people today. Always want the good stuff without being prepared to put the work into getting it Wink Grin

bloodyteenagers · 20/08/2016 01:33

If his pain was bad enough, he would be prescribed something. Occasionally I get prescribed tramadol, and hell will freeze over before I give away this or any other strong medication I get prescribed.

elliejjtiny · 20/08/2016 01:38

YANBU at all. And your GP will certainly start asking questions if you start requesting lots of extra tramadol.

TheRollingCrone · 20/08/2016 01:48

Oncetherewas You really need a new GP, I'm Angry on your behalf.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 20/08/2016 01:55

HELL no YANBU!!
Your DP is, to be polite, rather silly to have even told his friend about your emergency stash. Teach him to never ever mention it again, especially in settings where other people could hear about it. I'm quite sure there is a nice black market for these things!

Once - I agree, you need a new GP (or get the consultant to write her/ him a VERY stiff letter! As a rule, consultants rather get the hump when GPs attempt to override them...)

OnceThereWasThisGirlWho · 20/08/2016 02:13

Sorry, I have a thread, it's getting sorted. Just something tickled me about the idea of hunting down tramadol on the black market but in a very naice middle class way. I may not be making sense right now...

RepentAtLeisure · 20/08/2016 02:24

Christ no. What if the pills your DH persuaded you to give this guy damaged his health in some way, or if he accidentally overdosed, or even overdosed on purpose? As a pp said, there's a reason you need a prescription. And if the worst happened it wouldn't be your DH getting sued or arrested...

NovemberInDailyFailLand · 20/08/2016 02:27

Hide it, now. Under lock and key.

tribpot · 20/08/2016 02:45

The poor guy can't feed his family because he's buying painkillers off a dealer. And no doubt they are less and less effective because he's an addict.

Your DP is a complete idiot. You never admit you have controlled drugs in the house except to people you know and trust. If you find the house has been broken into when you say no, this will be on him. I would concoct a story about there not being any in the house, maybe make out that the pharmacy recalled it and you can't get any more. I don't think he'll believe your DP.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 20/08/2016 02:59

Let's just reiterate that again - tell your DP to never ever ever mention it again that you have a stock of tramadol.

I'm sure you know this, and why, but clearly your DP doesn't, so you really need to hammer the point home. And while you're at it, tell him that he can tell his friend that you've used all your stockpile, so there's none in the house.

RepentAtLeisure · 20/08/2016 03:03

Yes, tell him to go back to his mate and say you have none left.

DecaffCoffeeAndRollupsPlease · 20/08/2016 03:11

I wouldn't sell them, that is actually dealing. I also wouldn't worry about being burgled for a few tramadol, I've never heard of anyone going to such lengths - does this happen, ever?

WiddlinDiddlin · 20/08/2016 03:37

I have a stockpile of tramadol and also oramorph.

These things are prescribed to ME because I am often in sufficient pain to warrant their use, they are the drugs that 'suit' me, due to my conditions and other drugs I take and I've been told how to take them safely and effectively.

If this persons GP doesn't prescribe him tramadol it is because:

  • it is not necessary
  • it is not the right drug for that problem
  • it is not safe

If I run out of tramadol at home I can get a small amount from a pharmacist if the GP is out of hours, or from an out of hours gp, or I can go to A&E and be treated there - because its in my notes that thats what I have.

If I am out of my local area I am a bit stuffed *(hence, a small stockpile!)

I can't say id NEVER share something like that - if I knew that someone has a prescription for that drug, that strength of that drug, teh prescription IS current and they have run out or, we are away on holiday and they won't get an emergency supply from a pharmacist that doesn't have them on the books.. yes I might then but we are talking a tiny amount to get them through to when they can see someone, not a long term supply. (its never happened but someone has kindly shared with me in such a situation)

Someone who has NOT been prescribed them though.. no way, no how, not ever. Not worth the risk.

TaLLyHOnellie · 20/08/2016 06:16

AdmiralData - are you supplying them with the drugs?

OliviaBenson · 20/08/2016 06:32

I'd hide them op, I bet your DPs friend will start popping around- addicts do go to lengths to get their drugs. Do you trust your do not to go behind your back?

OliviaBenson · 20/08/2016 06:32

dP*

AdmiralData · 20/08/2016 23:16

Tally Absolutely not. I admit that i thought about it when I was given sob stories about family members being elderly/poorly but waited for DH to come home because i admit I'm naive and I wanted someone not-gullible to advise me Blush
