OK, I have to make a confession first. Up until recently I always flushed tampons - I had never really thought about it and nobody had ever told me I shouldn't. It just seemed such an obvious thing to do. Then I discovered on mn that I shouldn't. That I should bag it and bin it instead.

So I started to look for bags for this purpose, but I can't find them. I'm using nappy bags, sandwich bags, small freezer bags, or whatever.

Are there not bags made specifically for this purpose, that are sold alongside all the rest of the women's sanitary products??

mooncup is a silicone "cup" that collects the blood - tip it out wash and reuse!

BeachysSandyFlipFlops · 28/10/2016 21:33

If you bag and bin, won't more landfill be used than if they are skimmed off at the treatment centre and put in landfill? Not trying to be goady, but a plastic nappy bag as well as a tampon must be worse Confused

Agree to wrapping in new tampon wrapper or loo roll....

Jammiedodgers · 28/10/2016 21:34

Mooncup sounds rank, someone convince me this is a better thing?

ageingrunner · 28/10/2016 21:40

I just wrap in toilet paper and put in the bathroom bin or even don't bother with toilet paper
I don't get why bags are needed. It's not toxic waste Smile

m0therofdragons · 28/10/2016 21:40

I'm always confused by this. Is sending them out to sea worse that wrapping them in a plastic bag and sending them to landfill? I see how pads could block pipes and they often have a plastic layer but tampons are just cotton wool aren't they. I'm pretty sure my vagina is smaller than the toilet pipes even after 3dc 😱

BeMorePanda · 28/10/2016 21:40

I used a Mooncup for the first time this month and fuck me if it wasn't the most glorious revelation. GrinGrinGrin

So much more comfortable than tampons and pads and no rubbish! Incredible.

Jammiedodgers · 28/10/2016 21:43

Can anyone explain the logistics of a mooncup? Genuinely fascinated grossed out

SimonLeBonOnAndOn · 28/10/2016 21:43

I didn't know you shouldn't flush tampons either.
I put pads and tampon applicators in the bin, wrapped in loo roll.

Which is fine until my dog got in the bin,and during s family visit was spotted on the lawn chewing a used pad Blush

www.wessexwater.co.uk/binit/

I occasionally sit in on a meeting where the local water company rep solemnly repeats the 3 Ps - paper, pee and poo - that should be the only things flushed down your loo.

The other thing to be aware of is that if the blockage in in the pipe on your property, you will bear the cost of repair. Personally I can think of better things to spend my money on than calling out a luminous orange dynorod van on a bank holiday to remove flushable wipes from the pipe under my front lawn

idontlikealdi · 28/10/2016 22:07

Dog poo bags serve the purpose.

chowchowchow · 29/10/2016 00:12

Jammiedodgers: I was put off by the thought of a mooncup but o was bored browsing one day and decided to order one from amazon. It took a bit of getting used to actually getting in there Blush but now I won't go back to tampons. Ever.
No leaks, no negative environmental impact, no rubbish to put (or not) in the bin. Give it a go!

chowchowchow · 29/10/2016 00:14

Jamie: I think of it as a soft empty party popper lol.
Also I used to hate the idea of having a tampon up there sucking all my moisture out of my walls. Even the good moisture IYSWIM Confused

TaraCarter · 29/10/2016 00:54

Tampons are not cotton wool.

If they were cotton wool, they would fray apart in your vagina after absorbing all that moisture. As you know, they hold their shape, unlike a cotton wool ball!

They are actually made of cotton and viscose, like many a t-shirt. Would you fold up lots of t-shirts really small and flush them down the toilet without expecting hem to swell up with water and cause a blockage somewhere?

JanetStWalker · 29/10/2016 00:55

My dog devours used tampons in I put them in the little bathroom bin, he seems to regard them as a somewhat of a delicacy Hmm

JanetStWalker · 29/10/2016 01:07

My period blood reeks, doesn't yours? Hmm

TaraCarter · 29/10/2016 01:30

Right, this is for everyone confused about tampons.

Watch how far that tampon expands in actual water in just 28 seconds.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 29/10/2016 01:56

Mooncups for me mean shorter periods with much less pain and no irritation. (I use a different brand)

They have a very slight suction which means they sort of work with you in a proactive way rather than passively.

And I used to have blood bath type horrific periods

NightWanderer · 29/10/2016 02:04

How the fuck do you flush a nappy? Shock

ErnesttheBavarian · 29/10/2016 07:49

One of our toilets has a special pump. It's OK for the 3 Ps but nothing else. Visitor came. Flüche a tampon. No bathroom for a week, entire house stinking to the high heavens. Hugh plumber bill.

A year later same guest comes. Depute British embarrassment, I explain very carefully about the last visit, and the 3 Ps in the toilet, and ideally, don't use it. Last day of visit. She flushes another tampon. Same thing happens.

Best thing is, she denied it! The only other people who use that bathroom are my 2 teenage sons. And I pretty sure neither of them flushed a bloody tampon downAngry

So her visits have cost me the best part of 500 and I won't have her back. Can't afford the aggravation or the plumbers bills.

When I tried to tell her that you shouldn't flush tampons she said anything else was disgusting and she always had and always will and it was just me who was weird. I use a moon up anyway. I don't get how it's standard behaviour in public loos but apparently OK in homes?

There really needs to be education on this. Also other things like kitchen roll etc. Only the 3Ps.

NightWanderer · 29/10/2016 09:11

The pipes in my parent's house got blocked by a visitor's flushed tampon. Seriously, digging through weeks worth of piss and shit to dig the fucker out to clear the blockage is a million times more disgusting than putting a tampon in a bin.

LunaLoveg00d · 29/10/2016 09:25

I just use smartprice nappy bags, and then throw the bag in the kitchen bin. It's not a big deal.

WiltingTulip · 29/10/2016 09:36

"Flushable wipes" are also not recommended to be flushed... they are supposedly better at breaking down but only in ideal circumstances (which most pipes aren't).

LifeIsGoodish · 29/10/2016 09:38

Unfortunately they don't mention tampons!
