AIBU Courier broke our garage door!

AIBU to be furious...!?

I was out today with DS when I received a text to say that my parcel had been 'left in the garage'.

I thought it was strange as firstly, how would the courier get in the garage? Secondly, our garage door is electric and can only be opened from inside our home. Thinking it must be a mistake, I ignored it.

When I got home there was a slip through the door, stating that the parcel was indeed in the garage. Our garage is attached to our house and we have no internal door to it.

I pressed the internal button and heard an almighty crunch from the garage door! I headed outside and the door was hanging off! It had been prised up from the bottom (it can be pulled open approx 15cm) when I got on my hands and knees, low and behold, there was the parcel inside the garage! The parcel contained two baby dressing gowns so was fairly bulky but must have been squeezed under. Our garage has our fridge and pram in it (amongst other things!) and were not accessible.

DH came back from work and managed to get the door open so I could get inside but it is now half open and not secured.

The courier does not have a phone number (Hermes) and can only be contacted via online chat or email. I've contacted them to be told they will get back to me in 48 hours! I'm so angry! AIBU??

I hate Hermes, this is there contact number op if this helps at all - 0844 644 3593

Housewife2010 · 20/08/2016 08:47

I would contact the shop you ordered from as they were responsible for getting it to you.

greathat · 20/08/2016 08:52

Yes your contract is with the company you purchases from. Make them do the leg work

YoungGirlGrowingOld · 20/08/2016 09:28

Hermes are shocking. We had a card through the door which said ur parcel had been "left securely in an outbuilding". Which is clever as we don't have an outbuilding so I reported it stolen to the retailer.

Later that night my neighbour came round with the parcel. He said it had been hung on our door handle in full view of the road so he had taken it in for us. We complained but heard nothing.

LJC123 · 20/08/2016 09:50

Thanks for all your help. I've contacted the insurance company who are coming out and I've also contacted the place I ordered from.

I'll let you know when I hear back!

Hi

Please accept my most sincere apologies for inconvenience caused to yourself.

We do not deem this an acceptable method of delivery and would like to apologise for the manner that you have received your parcel.
Please send us your 16 digit tracking number and/or the full delivery name and address so we are able to address this with the Service Provider in question to ensure future parcels are delivered appropriately.

Feedback will also be given to the Service Provider’s field manager.

Regards

Uzma

That looks like a draft reply. I'd send the necessary stuff so they can find your order and account and make sure you ask them to pay for it.

Hissy · 20/08/2016 18:24

inconvenience caused to yourself

Jesus wept... What chance do you have when they can't even articulate properly?

ITS NOT YOURSELF!!!! < breathes>

londonrach · 20/08/2016 18:25

LJC123 · 20/08/2016 18:27

So now Hermes have told us to go through the retailer!

OP posts:
wowfudge · 20/08/2016 18:30

I think it is the retailer you need to deal with it. Consumer law.

FasterThanASnakeAndAMongoose · 20/08/2016 18:46

How infuriating OP! Hope they pay.

We've had a royal mail card through today saying that 3 parcels have been left with our neighbour at... And the number is our house number. And we were in Angry

That email would piss me off no end. Patronizing and illiterate.

The only acceptable solution is that someone comes round quick smart tonight/tomorrow morning and fixes the door, however much it might cost. What kind of idiot forces a locked door in order to deliver a parcel?

Which company was it that you ordered through? I'd get onto them as well - I'm sure they have funds to cover damages like this?

BugsyStar30 · 20/08/2016 20:33

I had the misfortune to work for Hermes for several months (before I came to my senses). Couriers are urged by management to deliver parcels wherever possible and quite often I got spoken to because I had too many carried over to the next day, simply because there was no way I could have left them securely. I'm sorry to say this was probably a case of a courier feeling under pressure. That doesn't excuse it in any way of course but Hermes have to shoulder some of the blame for how couriers are treated.

pootlepootle · 20/08/2016 21:00

That 'yourself' thing is becoming really popular. Drives me insane.

OP, the people to pressure is definitely the company yourself purchased something from. they'll have better access to management in Hermes and should feel responsible for their decision to use the cheapest method of delivery physically possible (unless you count Yodel).

greathat · 28/08/2016 20:34

Did you get this sorted/.

AHedgehogCanNeverBeBuggered · 28/08/2016 20:36

Farfromtheusual that happened to me! AND PayPal found in the seller's favour, I was raging! Angry
