AIBU over poor tiling job?

We have used a relatives's friend to tile our new bathroom, in the trade but not a specialist. Not very pleased with the results, and he's not finished yet.
Usually I can complain to shops and supermarkets, but this feels different. He's a really nice bloke, but is charging quite a lot too!
How can I say nicely that we will find someone else to do our ensuite? Please help!!!

The titles are spaced too far apart so the width. And the black dots look like mould. It would annoy me. But not sure what you can do now there are up

I thought someone may have a nice or funny way to tell workman
that I would like to use someone else for just the tiling bits.
That was my original posting, please!

I just used to say to my builder "sorry, I know I'm probably being a pain in the arse (hard stare, so I wasn't challenged) but I'm not very happy with X and Y". To be fair, it was only ever random bits of skirting. He'd just get the joiner to fix it straight away. No problem. You don't have to be funny

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 20/08/2016 09:53

Oh - I've just seen the photo. Agree that the tiles like widely spaced. Did he use those spacer things that look like crosses?

BigTroubleInLittleChina · 20/08/2016 10:10

Typical MN, someone comes on asking for opinion and others slate her for something completely different.

I think it was Vi's bluntness as having just read all this thread it did come across that way.

OP, if you are really are unhappy take a deep breath and tell him the jobs is over and get someone professional in (we've done loads of work over the years and from time to time we have had to 'speak' to a tradesperson as we were not happy with the work).

Viiolettheorgangrinder · 20/08/2016 10:20

Well if you can call a complete stranger a bitch, surely you can tell a workman you're not happy with their work?Confused

InvolvetheChicken · 20/08/2016 10:21

You definitely need to tell him that you aren't happy. Personally I would not be keen to pay 800 pound plus materials for a job I wasn't happy with and was not as I had asked.

Sorry don't know how you would phrase it but I hope you find the confidence to talk to him about it and agree that with your differing tile expectations it's best someone else do the ensuite.

As a friend of a relative they should do a better job for you or at least cheaper!

I know you are stressed but I do think Vi was trying to help and was blunt but not deserving of a personal attack. YABU if you don't apologise.

The chalk is probably grout haze. This is dust from drying grout and will wipe off.

The tile seems to have a tiny hole or two in the grout. This is also fillable but not the sign of a good tiler.

The spacing of the tiles seems like it might be the problem.
Unfortunately the tiles cannot be put up again as it is unlikely that they can be removed unless they are broken up.

If you are unhappy with the job, I think you do need to be brave and have a chat with the tiler. He needs to stop immediately and you need to start again with a new person. Do not let him use anymore tiles. This will cost you a lot. It's a big shame. In the future, don't use a relative's friend.

I can't see a ruddy thing on that picture, it looks like the front of a wardrobe to me!

I would not compromise on tiling. It stares at you in the face every time you are sat on the toilet you wash your face or have a bath. Professional tiling is so important, I want mine to look perfect.

You have no choice but to challenge him and point out all the defects. I would probably ask someone in the know as to how to word the defects but apart from that I would just say I wasn't happy with the standard.

blueyedboy · 20/08/2016 11:35

Thanks so much Gobbol. He said that he used small spaces?!?
Just the answer that I have been looking for.
Makes it worse that I have had time to stew over it. Mind goes blank!

Thank you so much Bigchina. You see my point entirely.
Some people just like to see their words in print!

How can you tell that the tiles are too widely spaced? There is no scale on the photo?

Secret77 · 03/09/2018 19:02

Hi all! Could you recommend any good plasterer & tiler, who could also fit a new kitchen and washing machine? I have just moved to SE6. Thank you
