Feel sick
He's worried about physics results

Even at 17 they still look so vulnerable
Fingers crossed

On the news they were saying they were expecting there to be many more A's & A* this year. Doesn't sound like it from the threads I've read. Mind you, maybe the 'good news' posters are being a bit reluctant to oust highly unusual for MN

It sounds like physics was a total cock up. Poor kids.

InternationalHouseofToast · 18/08/2016 11:01

Just, they're saying on the Guardian site that A*s and As are down this year so predicitons were wrong.

ShebaShimmyShake · 18/08/2016 11:01

If EVERYONE has failed, it could be a marking error by the exam board. It happens not infrequently. Get the school to raise the issue. Does EdExcel still exist? They were notorious for fucking up every single year, it was a running joke in Private Eye.

SvalbardianPenguin · 18/08/2016 11:02

The ones with stellar results have apparently moved on to a large advert in Piccadilly Circus.

PortiaCastis · 18/08/2016 11:03

I am bragging braggjng and more bragging
Dd got A*ABB
I am one bragging proud Mama

PotteringAlong · 18/08/2016 11:08

portia be very very proud Grin

SvalbardianPenguin · 18/08/2016 11:08

I thought there wasn't an A* at AS level?

Leta86 · 18/08/2016 11:08

I find reading this amazingly fair, tbh... In my country, before the state exam, meaning my generation too, the schools got you grades inflated to attract newbies, but to get into uni, you had to pass an exam for each one of them... and if you/your parents paid bribe/had a cousin working there, you'd go into the easy exam room, while no bribe meant you were on your own in the hard one. End result being there were people in a medical field with me who did not wanted to be there, but parents wouldn't pay the bribe to any uni except that one, and really really smart kids from poor families were left without a place anywhere... Mind you, introducing state exam only meant 1-2 generations had a fair chance until they figured out how to get around that too. So, while these exams are tough, remember, it could be much, much worse...

SoupDragon · 18/08/2016 11:12

DS1 looked up his AS results online earlier and I've just dropped him at school to pick up the paper copy and abandon him for a day of celebration with his friends. AAAB in maths, biology, physics and economics. Shame the B was in economics as he wants to study that at uni!

Congratulations to all who got what they wants and I hope all those who are disappointed manage to sort it out - it's not the end of the world.

GeorgiePeachie · 18/08/2016 11:14

AS is fine. I spent my final year at school doing a double year. Re took EVERYTHING. (except psychology)
Pulled BCCD up to ABBD and then ABB overall at A Level. Had to do double exams in January AND May. was horrendous but I did it.

Retakes are always an option.

Benedikte2 · 18/08/2016 11:17

OP you've done your best in supporting him through his exams. I hope the news from the meeting is hopeful.
Not easy being a mum at times like this.
Good luck

ShanghaiDiva · 18/08/2016 11:18

Just one result for my ds - took AS maths a year early and got an A :)
Congratulations to everyone who got what they wanted and for those who didn't - although it may feel like the end of the world now - it really isn't.

meridithssister · 18/08/2016 11:18

AABC for AS here. DS was very worried about the C marked subject, so he is hugely relieved. It's nice to see him smile, he has been so anxious and he is talking about uni again which he had refused to discuss so far.

Anyone need a gin?

ConformationFart · 18/08/2016 11:21

Maths...B
Physics....B
Chemistry.....B

And he's not happySad

helpimitchy · 18/08/2016 11:27

Four A's. History, Politics, Philosophy and Geography. He's very pleased. He wants to do Politics at uni.

Diglet · 18/08/2016 11:29

Guardian site that A*s and As are down this year so predicitons were wrong

The predictions are getting rapidly more inaccurate year by year. Not just a little bit but by a lot. The increase in unconditional offers isn't helping. It makes the admissions process unpredictable.

Mellifera · 18/08/2016 11:41

DD got B and C she's devastated.
She got A* in Maths and Further Maths at GCSE and now got a C 😢😢 because she messed up the statistic paper.

She's hiding in her room. Her uni courses all want 3 As. She may have to completely rethink her career choices.

LineyReborn · 18/08/2016 11:49

Mellifera , she can retake the Statistics paper, I think. DS (also A* at GCSE maths) says it was awful and he is planning to retake it and he hasn't even got his results yet.

SoupDragon · 18/08/2016 11:53

She may have to completely rethink her career choices.

She may have to rethink her timescale rather than the actual choice of career. It may also be possible to think laterally about it and take a slightly different approach.

JustForThisTopic · 18/08/2016 11:54

Mellifera oh, I want to hug her, you must be in bits. Poor DD. However, honestly, given their age/stage in life there is NO need to reconsider her career choices. If it means that much to her to persue that career she can make up for the lower grades. It's just a matter of working out the best way forward. I'd give her until 12:30, then go & talk to her. The sooner you get onto it the better I think. 🍫

LineyReborn · 18/08/2016 12:27

Mellifera DS also got a C in Maths. He's definitely going to retake the Stats module and possibly all of it. He knows he can get a better grade.

Amazingly he passed the dreaded Physics and got an A in Biology so things could be a lot worse.

QOD · 18/08/2016 12:33

Phew A in Business Studies
B maths and B Geography

Next yr will be Maths, Geography and then Biology. Typically she's dropped Business Studies

Mellifera · 18/08/2016 12:36

Thanks guys.
She needs 3A as a minimum next year. She got Bs in the other two maths papers, and an E in statistics.
She has only visited unis with a 3A minimum requirement. I think she needs to put her big girl pants on and start studying - if she still wants her dream career (the one she's been focused on for 3 years).
At GCSE level she did almost zero and got brilliant results. She never had to work up to now.
Doesn't work at A Level. Hopefully this is her wake up call.
Will now bring her a cup of tea and offer a hug, but I'm almost certain she knows why she messed up her predictions - too much time spent online and too little revision.
I know she didn't do enough, it was like watching a car crash. Her DB (15) did more for his end of year tests than she did.
I think that's why she's hiding, she doesn't want to hear 'I told you so'. I won't say it.

FoonaBaboona · 18/08/2016 12:40

My DS was one of only two that passed Physics AS on his course 2 years ago.
He's studying it at Uni now but his conditional offer was AAB and he got in his chosen Uni with ABC so all is not lost if they can pull up in the A2 level.

ObiWankyKnobby · 18/08/2016 12:45

Posted this on another thread today - it's really not the end of the world (although I know that it can feel that way...)

I just wanted to jump onto this thread to tell you my DD's story. She collected her AS's 2 years ago. They were way below what she was anticipating (2Cs 2Ds) and she was distraught. The next few days were hard fro her; she was embarrassed about how she had done, all her friends were bombing social media with there good results. She did lots of crying and we did lots of supporting!

Fast forward 2 years. She decided not to apply to uni with those grades, and she resat several papers. She decided to apply for entry this year, and take a gap year. She knew that she wanted her gap year to be worthwhile. She worked in a pub from Sept until Christmas, then got a job in a ski resort for 4 mths. She's spent the last 2.5 mths travelling round SE Asia with a group of friends, having an amazing time. She did really well in her A2s (BBC - the AS s were a massive wake up call), did lots of research into where she really wanted to study. Although her grades are short of their published offer (ABB) they offered her a place and she will be starting there in a month's time.

So my message is that it's really not the end of the world if today's results are disappointing - it may open up another route.
