To ask if you're going to buy a tv license if you don't have a tv?

New law is coming in this September forcing those who watch iplayer on devices to buy a tv license.

I don't have a tv and watch iplayer very rarely...

Should I buy a license?

I hardly ever watch any channels other than BBC and the not being subjected to adverts is one big plus I'd hate to lose.

hellokittymania · 16/08/2016 20:35

I don't agree with it. I'm rarely in the UK these days and don't want to pay for something I barely use.

LadyDeadpool · 16/08/2016 20:38

No chance, I don't watch anything on IPlayer, I don't use the BBC website and I never listen to the radio.

We don't have live TV but we use Netflix instead and it's cheaper for more content.

hellokittymania · 16/08/2016 20:40

Serious question, if you are visiting the UK and staying at a B and B, they have a licence. So you could watch iplayer, couldn't you?

Charlesroi · 16/08/2016 21:36

hellokittymania Yes, because it's the address that is licenced

rewardformissingmojo · 16/08/2016 21:38

Yes, I suppose so. Seems expensive just for GBBO and Strictly though.

"Even when we had a tv licence we never watched BBC. It was all either dumbed down rubbish, or stuff for very old people"

Why are you so snooty and high and mighty about BBC TV's output?

I take it that you never watch any:
Comedy
Crime drama
Sport
Documentaries
Period Drama
Other drama
Music programmes
News
Wildlife programmes
The Great British Bake Off
Cookery shows

etc, etc or have children who watch of have watched CBeebies/CBBC

I haven't included films, soaps and reality TV for obvious reasons.

I really struggle to understand why someone would write off such a wide choice of TV programmes. You must be very difficult to please.

I am happy to pay for a TV licence and watch something (usually recorded) uninterrupted by adverts.

Neome · 16/08/2016 22:05

I have a licence.
If I watch on my phone when out I believe I'm covered by my licence but what if I'm in someone else's licence -less house?

AliceInUnderpants · 16/08/2016 22:19

Nope. We haven't watched live television in over a year and cancelled the licence months ago.
I can't remember the last time I watched something on iPlayer either.

£145 a year is a short break away for us.

RattieOfCatan · 16/08/2016 22:22

Nope. I have watched iPlayer about twice in the four or so years that haven't had a licence, so I just won't bother watching anything else in it again. Don't listen to BBC radio either. The only BBC service I use is the Good Food website and that's rare. It's not because I think BBC is crap or anything, it's just because when I want to watch something I seem to be covered between Amazon Prime and Netflix!

NicknameUsed · 16/08/2016 22:24

We don't have Amazon Prime, Netflix, Sky or Freesat. I find I have more than I want to watch on the channels already available to me.

dailymaillazyjournos · 16/08/2016 22:29

Can you watch tv series such as Bake-Off on Netflix? If so, I'll get that I think as it works out at £90 per year. I watch so little on iplayer, the license fee seems a lot. I listen to classic fm or download music so not a bbc radio user either.

Akire · 16/08/2016 22:31

Not sure how they going check. They stopped sending out paper tv licisences years ago. If I have to put on a special number I would have no idea!

dailymaillazyjournos · 16/08/2016 22:39

Akire I'm guessing once they make a licence compulsory, you won't be able to access iplayer until you've registered, paid your fee and got a password etc.

Akire · 16/08/2016 22:41

I do pay it ! But on DD unless you are just going to be able to put in your address and it accepts you without question they are going need send out millions of numbers!

ArgyMargy · 16/08/2016 23:07

Nickname I think people who say the BBC is rubbish tend to be the kind who prefer Big Brother, TOWIE, MIC etc as that's what they think proper tv is.

Kmoggy · 17/08/2016 06:39

I reject the licence fee. Have done for many years.. I object to being forced to pay for something I have no interest in. There should at least be an opt out option for it. Bbc was the only thing I watched and even now that too has been scrapped. Why pay for I player? Delete it.. There are hundreds of other viewing methods out there now to watch whatever u want! I'm waiting on them coming round to my house where I'll take great pleasure in refusing them entry to my house without a warrant! It's complete rubbish... I'm also about to do away with sky and just use my Amazon Fire stick.

Kmoggy · 17/08/2016 06:40

*bbc3

heron98 · 17/08/2016 07:19

We have a TV set but don't watch TV on it because we cant get signal. However we do stream things from the internet on it, although never live TV.

We still pay for a licence. I am not sure if we need to, but it seems a bit churlish not to.

99GBPChargeToUseMyPostsJournos · 17/08/2016 07:37

For the people asking - the new law means you can watch on your device out and about but if your device is plugged in at an address other than your own, you need to be covered by a licence at that address.

99GBPChargeToUseMyPostsJournos · 17/08/2016 07:38

(which presumably means that people without a licence can plug in their tablet at their friends house, download stuff to watch later in their own home if it's not plugged in)

myownprivateidaho · 17/08/2016 07:40

I don't have a TV and rarely watch Iplayer. However I'm sure I watch it at least once a year, so I'll pay. I listen to radio 3 a lot so getting money's worth somehow!

ButteredToastAndStrawberryJam · 17/08/2016 07:56

You DON'T need a TV licence for listening to the radio, not since 1971.

People that don't like the BBC tend to like programs such as Big Brother, TOWIE etc, what an idiotic statement.

The BBC is NOT independent of the State, if you think that, then you're being naive. They are VERY bias.

Gottagetmoving · 17/08/2016 09:01

The BBC pay ridiculous amounts of money to some ridiculous people. I can choose to subscribe to Sky or Virgin but have no choice about contributing to the BBC if I have a device that receives it even if I don't watch it.
I don't think that's right.

ButteredToastAndStrawberryJam · 17/08/2016 09:13

It's not right and it's not fair. Totally not viable in this day and age, with the vast amount of channels and choice, all the different companies to choose from, it's just ridiculous that the BBC are still demanding this. People just want a choice, all TV or no TV at all is not a choice, who the F do they think they are!
