Some vaccine leaked out during vaccination

Took dcs to boots to have men b vaccine and ds the little wriggler pulled away and the needle came out. The nurse immediately put the needle back in and gave the rest of the dose. Some of the vaccine squirted down his arm, just a couple of drops.
Aibu to think she should have stopped at that point and started a new syringe? I asked and she said it would be fine but I'm not convinced.
Anyone got any knowledge or experience? I've contacted my gp for advice from the nurse and waiting to hear back.

OP, yanbu in the slightest contacting the GP to find out. Part of a doctor's job is to reassure, especially when it comes to child health. I hope you are feeling more reassured now having read the pp's with scientific knowledge. Smile

Thanks kreesh, I was unsure of who else to contact and just thought the nurse would obviously gave some experience as she will be administering this vaccine on a daily basis. Definitely feel more reassured now.

Ds now has a red lump at the injection site (though not as big as dds but his ended up being two injections and they're both hot and red) and his temp is slowly climbing so definitely having an immune response to the vaccine which is promising.

Sounds like a good response op.

Slightlypanicked · 16/08/2016 22:02

Yeah Idefix I would usually prefer for them not to have Temps but I was glad when he showed some reaction. Temp has gone slightly over 38 so just given calpol. The poor loves have very sore arms though.

Hope they wake up feeling better, the temp symptoms only seem to last for 24hrs 😊

Slightlypanicked · 17/08/2016 08:47

Thanks Idefix they're great this morning. No more Temps just very sore arms although dds injection site is much redder and bigger than dc's wondering if that may be because he didn't get as much though

My two had theirs done at the same time. DD2 had a slight ache for a day and a small patch of redness, DD1's arm was agony for about 4 days and half her arm was red with a huge big lump at the site. All better now. I guess it's just how the individual reacts, nothing more than that.

'As long as most of it went in it'll be fine. The doses aren't that exact anyway"

Really??? Not accurate to an extremely high degree as specified by the product licence?

Slightlypanicked · 17/08/2016 09:08

Thanks shelagh ds had me hold his arm all night incase it moved and hurt bless him. Dds looks far worse but she's been fine.

They know how much is actually IN it, poisoned, but the exact quantity needed to generate a response will vary from person to person, hence the vagueness about dose size.

Slightlypanicked · 17/08/2016 10:28

Dose would be the same for 6 foot 2 dh as it would a little 8 week old baby so I'm sure what ds got would be fine for his size hopefully

I know this thread is a couple of months old but the same has just happened to us! DS pulled his arm away and there was fluid down his arm (and up my face!Shock)

I've tested to see what 0.5ml looks like on my arm and it's a lot more than what I saw. The pharmacist was adamant it went in, just can't help worrying.

I wouldn't trust her. Wait to hea back from your doctor.
