I meet the object of my desires two or three times a year (he does a fair few talks) and I've chatted to him about all sorts. The first time I met him we talked about where I used to work as it's a place of interest to him. Made me laugh because it was like the tables were turned and he was the one impressed with me! It was mad. Friend and I kept our cool and behaved like adults for the entire conversation and then left the building, went round the corner out of sight and sound, and squeeed our heads off! BlushGrin We're such saddos Grin

But if I meet frogmore I'll be sure to say hello. Such a charmer.

joellevandyne · 17/08/2016 11:30

I used to be an entertainment reporter, so have met/talked on the phone to dozens of household names. The first few times were awful and I probably came across as a moron as I was young and terribly impressed by fame. As I went on though, as others have said, you do find they are all just people; some are cool and hugely charismatic and you fall in love with them a bit, some are assholes or tedious, some just want to be polite and go home. Heath Ledger was extremely interesting, very politically motivated and kind enough to redo his hour-long interview after I fucked up the dictaphone and failed to record it the first time around.

The more I learned to just treat them like ordinary people with an interesting job, the easier it was, and over the years I've gotten on quite well with a few and even gone out socially (one memorable night resulted in helping an A-list actress's boyfriend carry her home after we all knocked back too many margaritas).

Never shagged one, but I know someone who did bag a fantasy-level leading man for a night, and it was a bit dismal by her account.

I seen dermot o Leary once walking down the street in belfast. I said to my tiny friend, omg he's almost as small as you are. He looked bemused, smiled and walked on!

WiddlinDiddlin · 17/08/2016 12:00

Musicians I tend to go all stupid and blurt out random stuff.

People off the telly - I now know so many its just a job and I tend to be at an event where them being on the telly is not the main focus though relevant (dog trainers, so dogs is the subject not 'them being on telly').

Some of them I knew before they were on the telly, some after but for example the two trainers from Rescue Dog to Super Dog, recently on C4 and some of the people from Dogs Might Fly - ive known them all so long AND so do loads of my colleagues/peer group - not really a 'thing'.

Don't think I've ever met anyone whose been in a film.. and I wouldn't recognise half the 'famous for being famous' types anyway.

Figgygal · 17/08/2016 12:08

I'm with you I never have a clue what to say I have nothing in common with these people I often see competitions to have tea with someone like Benedict Cumberbatch I literally couldn't think of anything worse what would we talk about!!

Saying that I met Damian Lewis few years back unfortunately I was very drunk he was good enough to have a very awful photograph taken with me saw him a few times around the village we were all staying in over a Christmas break.

I've met Andy from CBeebies a couple times over the last few years but just throw my ds in his direction and talked about how much we loved dinosaur adventures .

I sort of met the bloke who owns Dartmoor Zoo the film 'We brought a zoo' was based on, had taken dd in to change her and only took in a nappy and wipes but she had done a massive poo that went up her back so stripped her off and cleaned her and brought her out in just her nappy to get some clean clothes and saw him and he gave me a puzzled look so I just said 'she's exploded' and walked away. He did laugh so didnt feel like a completely numpty

WhatamessIgotinto · 17/08/2016 12:37

*I bumped into Bill Wyman when I was about 13yo.

I'm surprised he didn't propose.*

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!

GeminiRising · 17/08/2016 12:51

I met Alex Jones when I was volunteering for Children In Need at Carfest two years ago.

We asked if we could have a photo with her, then I realised I had been tent-washing and wearing the same t-shirt for 3 days (CIN had only given us one each!) and apologised for being a bit smelly!

She gave me a weird look but still let me have a photo taken with her Grin

NotAQueef · 17/08/2016 12:52

laBRuja I literally spat some of my chicken and sweetcorn sandwich on my keyboard reading that. I never believe anyone who writes that they spat out their tea etc, but it just happened! :-)

I'm the person that if a celebrity said to me 'don't you know who I am?' there is a good chance the answer would be no! I don't tend to watch a lot of the popular shows such as Poldark, Broadchurch, Downton Abbey etc and I don't have Sky either, so that rules all of those people out as well. Quite often shows have guests on and I find myself going 'who ARE these people?!' even though the world and his wife seems to know. Blush

JellyBellyKelly · 17/08/2016 20:04

Anthony Stewart Head... Perfectly lovely after my opening gambit of 'Hello! What's it like working with David Boreanaz'? on an Easyjet flight out of Bristol once.

Willow2016 · 17/08/2016 21:36

Argghghgh not another one...am I the only person in the world who hasnt met ASH?

Slopes of to climb into a bottle of Wine and eat my entire box of hotel chocs.

JedRambosteen · 17/08/2016 22:22

The anecdote about Heath Ledger above makes me sad. I always thought he was one of the good ones - he had a lovely vibe about him & he was someone whose career I watched with interest, as he seemed to follow his nose and take interesting, varied roles. What a loss! Sad

SapphireSeptember · 17/08/2016 22:34

I can only think of one, and that was Tarja Turunen. DH had got me a wonderful Christmas present, I thought we were just going to her gig, but we had a VIP package which meant we had dinner with her the night before and then backstage passes. I barely said a word, I was so starstruck, and I was a lot shyer then than I am now. But oh my goodness was she lovely! Due to her being sacked from Nightwish I'd heard an awful lot about her diva like attitude, which I concluded was a load of crap.

I desperately want to meet Amy Lee, but I think if I did I wouldn't say a word, I'd be too in awe. (Before anyone says anything, her music means an awful lot to me and has helped me through some really shit times, so I think that's a good enough reason. She comes across as a lovely down to earth mum, which right now I think is her most important job.)

(I'm sure I saw Alan Rickman in Oxford once, but didn't dare go up to him. If I had I would have made a total arse of myself.)

SistersOfPercy · 17/08/2016 23:01

Lots of band types but the most memorable was also Brian May at a very exclusive gig in London. I'd turned to look behind me and seen him stood there, nodded in acknowledgement and turned back at which point my mind went"THAT'S FECKING BRIAN MAY!" I spun back around and he was really laughing at my reaction and have me a huge smile and two thumbs up.

Meet loads of star wars actors through the cosplay garrison we're part of. Some obscure some not so much but most are usually lovely and see you at events so frequently they'll shout you when they see you.

Had a laugh and a joke with Kenny Baker a few weeks ago at a Carrie Fisher signing. Was really sad when he died as he was such a huge personality.

trafalgargal · 18/08/2016 07:37

I once had to spend the day with a celebrity for a TV show.
I'd attended the pilot filming of the series as a standby contestant (it was a hidden camera show based on the premise that people will do things for celebs they'd never do for random strangers) and had a really nice day with the crew and the celebrity who I expected to be a bit of an idiot from his TV persona but was lovely .......when it came to filming my show on location I got ...... David Dickinson ...who by the end of the first hour of filming both I and the crew could have cheerfully strangled. The studio filming for the results show was better. The host was Eamon Holmes who was very nice but continuously fluffed his lines and needed retakes....and my son and ex were really sorry they had decided not to come as my opposing Celeb was Flick from Robot Wars who they both had a crush on (and I won £4K from the show.)

I was once at an audition with Mark "the beast" from the Chase , nice bloke, very dry sense of humour just like he is on TV.

SapphireStrange · 18/08/2016 10:19

Jed, I know. I'm still Sad about Heath to this day.
