To think I shouldn't have to put up with this at work?

There's a group of young teen boys who come into the place I work. They're all about 12-14 and they're horrible. In the last week, I've been called a fat cunt, had a spitball blown in my face, been told to fuck off by them and more. They always leave a huge mess behind them- last night, it was sauce smeared all over the table/window/wall, paper torn and thrown everywhere and food all over. They'd also put a balloon down the loo and flooded the disabled loo.

Work have done very little about it. They get kicked out only if I complain to a manager (they came in when I was on my break the other day and trashed the place- it took me nearly an hour to tidy up the mess they'd caused which meant I ended up working over to get everything done.)

I'm so fed up of dealing with them. I've had enough of the abuse, the being made uncomfortable by them (hard to describe- I'm on edge all of the time they're in because of past trouble). I'm sick of the mess they make.

I think they should be barred, but none of the managers agree (they don't see the full scope of what's going on because they don't work on dining area). AIBU to expect more support/protection at work?

What a muppet the manager is! Just call the police yourself, don't hesitate.

ExtraHotLatteToGo · 13/08/2016 13:31

I'd call the police the minute they step through the door.

I'd look for another job.

musicposy · 13/08/2016 13:33

Go above their heads to head office. Say the managers aren't backing you up.
To be fair, the managers at my DD's mcdonalds are barely out of their teens either. DD has been a manager there from 18. She's been called a bitch and goodness knows what else by customers - and not just by teens - blokes in their 50s are terrible. She's had to grow a really thick skin. But luckily the overall store manager is not adverse to threatening people and sticks up for them, and the police have been called a fair few times. If yours isn't doing that, you need to go above them.

EvansOvalPies · 13/08/2016 13:33

So now go over the Store Manager's head - if he/she is not interested, you work your way up the chain of command. Make sure you keep a record of your complaints (dates/times/wording). What sort of chain of management is it? If someone like MacDonalds or Burger King, then write to the head of HR. It is appalling that you should have to endure this type of behaviour, and your Manager needs his/her head on a stick for not backing you up.

JenLindley · 13/08/2016 13:33

Call the police and refuse to engage with them in anyway. Your managers need hauled across some sort of board and given their arses on a plate.

I would put something in writing to the managers and copy head office. Let them see that you've copied it, too.

Say that despite your continuing discomfort and unhappiness, and despite your several attempts to get management to act to keep you safe and comfortable in your work environment, you have no choice but to preserve your own safety at work.

Therefore, you will be calling the police the next time you are harassed, threatened and even assaulted by anyone in your workplace. And that you will call the police every single time an incident occurs.

If this gains attention on social media or local media and paints them in a bad light then so be it!

You've given them ample opportunity to step in and do something and they have a duty of care to you.

WrappedInABlankie · 13/08/2016 13:43

You either need to call the police or tell your manager when they come in if he/she refuses to deal with the situation you'll refuse to clean up the result of it.

Babyroobs · 13/08/2016 13:47

I would make your manager ban them completely. If they break the ban then call the police.

Yes, what Walter said is perfect.

timelytess · 13/08/2016 13:51

They're like that in school.

It's not a franchise.

I'm going to phone HR on Monday. I've honestly reached my limit. We used to get a lot of families in on an evening, now we don't and I think it's because of the teens causing trouble. I've pointed this out in the past to no avail.

You need to go right to the top on this. If it is a big chain - go to head office HR - they have a legal duty to keep you safe and free from bullying and harassment in the work place - something that your direct line managers may not be aware of.

You could also call local police when you are not at work to get advice and they may suggest that you call/text when it next happens. They are well prepared for asb from teens in the peak summer holidays.

Do not tolerate this - your physically safety if not your dignity is at stake - you will also be helping out these little monsters who will get put in their place before they graduate to worse behaviour as this is currently deemed acceptable.

Gallievans · 13/08/2016 16:22

Please, please OP take it further before you get hurt. Call the police immediately the next time they start and yes, get to a place of safety. Also, your local environmental health may be able to help as their behaviour isn't goiungbto help the food safety standards there, is it (hint hint). Your managers are breaking two laws that I can think of by not supporting you- both interrelated and surrounding your right for a safe working environment and the right not to be harassed at work.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 13/08/2016 16:30

Call the police next time they come in, explain what is happening another you fear for your safety and the safety of others. When they take a statement, tell them that you have reported it x times before and your management aren't interested. Show them the photos, this is causing a public nuisance

QuestionableMouse · 13/08/2016 17:48

Thank you for the support. I'll start with HR and see what they say, then if I need to on Tue (next day at work) I'll contact the police.

Hit them with HASAWA.

You have a responsibility for your own health and safety, and they also have a responsibility for YOUR health and safety.

Obviously don't go in all guns blazing but do remind them of their duties and that under H and S legislation they are personally responsible as well as the company and the fine is up to £20 000 each. Oh and if they sack you you can still complain.

They should be barred.

That is the only thing that will keep you safe, it is not unreasonable.

Talk to ACAS.
