To be shocked at the price for an Afternoon Tea?

It is my friend's birthday on Saturday and a group of us (about 15) casually agreed a while ago that we'd go out for Afternoon Tea at a local restaurant. I had never been to one before, wasn't too sure what it was all about so I just agreed to it.

Today I received the Menu of this Afternoon Tea we are having and for some finger sandwiches, a cake and a cup of tea it's £20 per person Shock

Maybe I live in a little bubble but that sounds crazy? This restaurant is going to get £300 out of us for supplying some sandwiches and some cakes?

The menu comes across as very pretentious and is written in such a way that by the designer throwing in some posh words and an over exaggerated description of a bit of lettuce it makes people happily hand over £20 for such 'luxury'.... Grin

The tea is "loose leaf" apparently - what does that even mean? Am I going to get a cup of tea with foliage floating on the top it? Grin

I can have a ham and mustard sandwich, a cake and a cup of tea at home for a lot less than £20 Grin

But anyway - I just needed to vent.

I'm obviously still going to go as it's a good friend's birthday but I think it will be the last time I commit to an Afternoon Tea Grin

It's my own fault really for agreeing to it without actually fully knowing what it was Grin

Maybe I'm just not posh enough for such things Grin

Can people tell me about any Afternoon Teas they have experienced and how U I'm being because actually I'm in for a treat that is well worthy of £20 Grin

Brew Cake Wine

squoosh · 11/08/2016 16:06

Why would you call someone a 'mug' for spending £20 on afternoon tea?

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 11/08/2016 16:08

Menu looks great. You do know you get all the sandwiches and cake listed for the price. And scones and jam and cream. Well worth it.

chaplin1409 · 11/08/2016 16:08

I love the idea of afternoon tea very grown up and posh sounding my problem is I don't like tea 😕

NE14T · 11/08/2016 16:09

The one posted up thread, the afternoon tea for £19.95 or whatever. It is that one, right, it's the only afternoon tea listed!

here

Writerwannabe83 · 11/08/2016 16:09

Grin Grin @ feckin I'm so miserable!!! All I want is a bog standard jam butty and a strawberry doughnut!! Grin

However, off topic, WTF is chocolate salami?!

Writerwannabe83 · 11/08/2016 16:11

NE41 - that's the one and it's still just sandwiches and cakes Grin

OP posts:
FeckinCrutches · 11/08/2016 16:11

And you get to take the cakes home with you!

NE14T · 11/08/2016 16:11

No it's not, you were moaning a minute ago when you thought that's all you were going to get!

Writerwannabe83 · 11/08/2016 16:12

No idea NE41 - I shall let you know once I've seen it Grin

*I got the impression I was going to get 4 finger sandwiches, a cake and a cup of tea and be charged £20.

I guess it's no so bad if we actually get more sandwiches and more cakes....*

There you go, not so bad Grin

FeckinCrutches · 11/08/2016 16:13

And the bloody scones, don't forget the scones!

NE14T · 11/08/2016 16:14

Ooooo do you get it on the menz menu too? Oh yes, do report back, I'm very intrigued...

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 11/08/2016 16:14

Omg I've just read the menu, that's LOADS!!

Writerwannabe83 · 11/08/2016 16:14

Where I live, a scone is just a different type of cake. And I hate them Grin Grin

Is that where you're going, CA?! The house and the grounds are gorgeous (although Ds did do a wee in the bush by the back gate Hmm ) - my relatives live minutes away and every time we visit we go there. Never made it for an afternoon tea though.

BillSykesDog · 11/08/2016 16:17

If you go to Costa it's a fiver for a sandwich, £3:00 for a cup of tea and £4:00 for a cake. That's £12:00 for bog standard self service. £20:00 for table service somewhere nice isn't bad.

Writerwannabe83 · 11/08/2016 16:17

That's the place - at least I know a private wee spot now if the queue for the toilet is too long Grin

chaplin I don't like tea either, afternoon tea is a fantastic opportunity to get a bottle of champagne instead!
I'm not really a fan of that either really, but I'll drink it Grin

middlings · 11/08/2016 16:18

If I go for afternoon tea I don't want to eat for a week afterwards so I tell myself it's just another meal out which, at £20, becomes quite good value :)

Couldn't be doing with the nonsense of the Ritz or Claridges though. That's just silly money.

wizzywig · 11/08/2016 16:20

God i could really do with an afternoon tea. So ruddy civilised

Tankerery · 11/08/2016 16:20

Seems good value to me.
It's a proper meal, not a snack so make sure you're hungry.

I meet a mate in central London 2-3 times a year and we always go somewhere new for tea. It's something different and fun. Normally about £35-40 pp.

I bet you have a great time.

BarbaraofSeville · 11/08/2016 16:23

Look at it as £20 for a 2 course meal out and it suddenly doesn't seem so expensive.

ThymeForTea · 11/08/2016 16:25

I've been to afternoon tea with as much 'bubbles' (which was 5% fizzy wine) at the Marriott in Westminster for £35. It was exquisite.
