I really do despair of all the atrocites carried out and the potential ones like this one carried out. Why cant everyone just get along?Confused www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/disneyland-paris-evacuated-after-suspect-8604754

YABU to be surprised. Disney is very much a symbol of western decadence and capitalism.

Hulababy · 11/08/2016 07:02

We've been going to Disney Orlando soft the past 12 years and they have always checked every bag etc. The new bits in the last year or two are the metal detectors which everyone goes through at Universal and selected people at Disney

YeOldeTrout · 11/08/2016 08:34

Disney is pretty shit, if one place could use dismantling...

MsWorthington · 11/08/2016 08:47

Of course the Disney parks are a possible target, they've been aware of this since 9/11. Any place which is high profile and attracts large numbers of people in a lesure capacity is.

Apprently the Orlando nightclub shooter scoped out Disney Springs as a possible target for his atrocity. Disney Springs isn't a theme park, it's an outdoor mall and restaurant complex which makes it a very "soft" target as it dose not have the security level the theme parks have.

Florrieboo · 11/08/2016 08:55

Disney is bound to be a target, it is consumerism on a huge scale.

CotswoldStrife · 11/08/2016 09:05

The Disney Park itself was not evacuated, just the station next to it. The security measures they have in place were fine when I was there the other week.

BakewellSliceAgain · 11/08/2016 09:06

I am old enough to be concerned at lonely bags at railway stations. I have asked young backpackers before now if the bag along the platform is theirs!

Sadly current events have now made my ingrained habits relevant once more. Although Tbh a suicide bomber is the more likely event. Sad times indeed.

dancetilldawn · 11/08/2016 09:11

The worlds fine unless Trump gets elected
The world is in rather a sorry state, but it will be worse if Trump becomes president of course, but I fear Clinton even worse. I fear her foreign policy's much more than Trumps.

dancetilldawn · 11/08/2016 09:13

foreign policies

Glitteryfrog · 11/08/2016 10:20

I'm surprised if you've got to 30+ without being evacuated from somewhere due to an abandoned package or a dialed in threat.

There are constant announcements in stations saying 'keep hold of your luggage'

augustwashout · 11/08/2016 10:24

The problem is glittery today's terrorists do keep hold of their luggage.
They blow themselves up with it.

SwedishEdith · 11/08/2016 10:33

They've only started having bins in train stations again (albeit just clear plastic bags) - they were all removed in the 70s.

Camembertie · 11/08/2016 10:39

My Physics GCSE exam was evacuated half way through due to a bomb threat (London suburbs) - I saw a saxophone being blown up at the train station once, and my dad left Harrods about 2 mins before the bomb there.

Whilst not denouncing the very real threat today it feels no different to London I grew up in where such things were commonplace - and I feel it's naive to believe that up until this report DLP was not a potential target - it would have been on the watch list for AGES

BakewellSliceAgain · 11/08/2016 10:44

A guy with guns was arrested at Disney Paris in January. He was sentenced to house arrest.

BakewellSliceAgain · 11/08/2016 10:48

I should say he had them for self defence and they were picked up through screening at his hotel. So reassuring in the sense the weapons were picked up by security.

becciandbump · 11/08/2016 18:35

My sis has just cancelled her Christmas Disneyland trip as she was worried it was a target x

SkydivingFerret · 11/08/2016 18:41

Security is really quite tight at disneyland it's no more dangerous there than anywhere else really

Mov1ngOn · 11/08/2016 18:42

I was at the hotel in Jan when the man with guns was arrested. It did pretty much freak me out at the time (they thought there was an accomplice and I was in my room wondering what we did if a gunman came in our room/ panicking about the walk to the station /Park area the next day.)

However the armed police on every single corridor the next morning were strangely reassuring. They seem to have a good plan in place...

trufflehunterthebadger · 11/08/2016 18:47

Disney has been a target for years. It's not a new threat

mrsfuzzy · 11/08/2016 18:52

when i was growing up there was the threat of nuclear war from the soviets, the IRA bombings on mainland britain, now there is al quaeda and isis.
everything seems scary but it has been far worse. it's not a fact of life nowadays waking up and being terrified this is the day your home town is going to get nuked, or the IRA are going to bomb the local shopping centre i feel a lot safer nowadays it's got to be said.

mrsfuzzy · 12/08/2016 16:28

has anyone been put off going to other 'high risk' areas ? i think we need to get on with it and stick the proverbial two fingers up.

BakewellSliceAgain · 12/08/2016 21:10

I did pass on a Belgian trip with the that's.

BakewellSliceAgain · 12/08/2016 21:15

Sorry that should be:

I did pass on a Belgian train holiday this summer. That was a bit silly really but I wouldn't have felt comfortable.

Godotsarrived · 12/08/2016 21:22

Having grown up in the sharp end of Belfast, when I first moved to England, I was amazed that the police were not armed and there were no soldiers on patrol. I never felt traumatised by the sight of armed RUC and soldiers in full cammo walking the streets. Children take all of this in their stride. We have been living with one form of terror or another for centuries. The only difference now is the wall to wall 24/7 coverage. There is no respite. Try hard not to let it worry you unduly OP. The world keeps turning and life goes on.
