to find the Olympics on 2 out 3 BBC TV stations endlessly too much?

I'm no sport fan - bit of football now and again - but 2 out of 3 tv stations feels way too much for me.

Surely one dedicated station would be enough.

I don't watch much BBC stuff anyway.
Sick of all the adverts for their own programmes, all the rip-offs of commercial tv programmes.

I'm quite sure commercial tv would have bid to broadcast the Olympics if there was enough viewer interest.

I'm tired of the BBC only showing what commercial tv is already showing or wants to show - surely the point of the BBC should be to show what the commercial channels won't show.

It's (just over) two weeks, every four years.

There's plenty of time during all the other weeks in-between, to cram full with endless drivel like cooking show after cooking show, dull antiques programmes, Eastenders etc.

Sports fans pay their license fees too.

neveradullmoment99 · 07/08/2016 19:11

Its boring and i hate it. I hate that fact that regular shows are suspended. It assumes everyone is interested in Sport and i hate watching it. All of it. Different if you are taking part in it.

FoxesOnSocks · 07/08/2016 19:12

Not very interested in the Olympic myself, but there are so many other channels that don't have sport I'm not bothered. Also I means I can get through more of my book instead of watching the usual nonsense and the regretting not reading instead!!

cardibach · 07/08/2016 19:39

You contradict yourself there OP. You say commercial to would take it up if it were popular, suggesting it isn't and therefore shouldn't be on, then say the BBC should show what the commercial channels won't show. Which is it to be?
And since you don't watch BBC much anyway, why do you care?
Some programmes will be postponed for two weeks, some will be shown on a different channel, it'll all go back to normal soon. Loads of people do enjoy it. Two weeks every four years isn't really a lack of balance.

yoowhoo · 07/08/2016 19:48

YABU if you don't like it. Don't watch it! it's once every 4 years and it's a wonderful thing! I've not tuned in yet but can't wait to

desertmum · 07/08/2016 21:43

Least sporty person on the planet here - but I am LOVING the Olympics - we are now experts in synchronised diving, cycling (nail biting women's race), gymnastics . . . and the 41 year old Olympic gymnast is awesome.

NeedAnotherGlass · 07/08/2016 22:58

There is far too much sport to be able to fit it on one channel.
I am delighted to see so much coverage.
If people don't like it, tough! There's plenty of other stuff that I find boring.

Andrewofgg · 08/08/2016 20:19

The worst are such nonsense events as ice-skating and synchronised swimming where the "results" depend on the subjective opinions of observers. If you can't measure it scientifically and precisely - don't look for winners or give them medals.

BoneyBackJefferson · 09/08/2016 00:00

Andrewofgg

Do you include gymnastics and dressage in your list?

Topseyt · 09/08/2016 02:49

I am loving it. I think it is just right.

I am not a sporty person but it is fascinating.

If you don't like it then nobody is forcing you to watch.

Yorkieheaven · 09/08/2016 03:08

YANBU
It's a total bore fest.

morningtoncrescent62 · 09/08/2016 08:21

YANBU. I don't understand why it has to be on two channels - isn't that what the red button is for? I'm not a sports fan, but I do like to watch the diving (don't know why that alone appeals to me). So I look at the schedule, and use the red button. Rest of the time, I'm not interested and I don't understand why all the arts programmes on BBC4 have to be displaced. OK, so I can watch videos or other channels, and I do. But what really gets me is the domination of the BBC news by the Olympics, as if nothing else is happening. I've entirely given up on BBC Breakfast and gone over to Al Jazeera in the mornings for the duration.

babybythesea · 09/08/2016 08:23

I'm with the loving the coverage crew.
But then I don't do antiques, cooking shows, soaps or any of the other tat that's normally on. I usually average an hour or two a week of TV watching. I'm making up for it at the moment and getting my money's worth from the licence fee! You've got the other fifty or so weeks of the year to watch the other shows. Find something else to do for these two.
And if you strip any thing back it sounds silly. We all know that some people can run faster. We also all know that some people cook better, or that some made up people have fights and make up, or that some people manage to find old stuff in their house they can sell. Who cares about any of it?
Turn and turn about. Sometimes stuff is on you want to see. So,entires it isn't, and that's not the end of the world.

babybythesea · 09/08/2016 08:24

So entires? Sometimes.

situatedknowledge · 09/08/2016 08:28

YABVU. It is brilliant family TV and inspiring to our children.

ShipwreckedAndComatose · 09/08/2016 08:33

I agree, I love seeing sports I would never otherwise watch and also think it's a far better thing for families to watch together. Inspiring is the right word.

Andrewofgg · 09/08/2016 15:46

Boney Yes. No measurement by machine - no medals.

BoneyBackJefferson · 09/08/2016 17:11

Andrewofgg

I can understand that, I have often thought the same thing about many of the sports.
