AIBU car seats - she's too small to fit in the right size

does anyone know what to do in this situation? I think i'm going to have to go up a size, she'll just get pressure rashes if I keep squeezing her in the one I've got.

She's still in her first car seat.....is it possible to get car seats for the next size up that can also be used as a buggy? ie with a set of wheels. I don't have a car so when I go on the train somewhere I need a travel system that is car seat and buggy so we can go in relatives' cars once we are at the destination if you see what I mean.

I believe you do need to be careful with height as well as weight 1 the straps should be at or just below the shoulders - too low and they could slide off in an accident. With the seat we've got this happened long before his head reached the top of the seat (manufacturers confirmed we should stop using it).

JinkxMonsoon · 06/08/2016 22:45

I'd be very surprised that a nine month old is too small for an infant car seat. Why are you struggling to fit her in exactly? Do you have a photo?

JinkxMonsoon · 06/08/2016 22:45

Too BIG, sorry.

I had the same issue... My solution is to get a collapsable buggy for travelling if you don't have one already (I have a bugaboo - massive and non-collapsable!) and order a car seat to your relatives house.

My relos are abroad so it turned out that it was better for them to scope out the car seat situation as there are different laws everywhere...

It wasn't too expensive either - I've purchased car seats by weighing up risk / likelihood etc. In the UK (London) DC in Maxi Cosi, rear facing. At relos I was less worried because they live in the middle of nowhere and relos drive like pensioners. DC seat there is forward facing and on the cheaper end of the absolutely safe scale. Also got one which was group 1 - 4 so it will last.

Incidentally, if you don't have a collapsable buggy, check out Silver Cross - their buggies go up to a 25kg weight limit. I can't vouch for them as I don't have one but my kid is massive so I predict I will know a lot more about them soon!

thank you so much for the lovely helpful replies, glad to know i'm not the only one who's had complications with car seats!

KokoLoko and the lady that posted the link to the sit n stroll, that's brill, still expensive but worth bearing in mind

re. inserts, I removed those buggers ages ago :-D, but it did take me a while to realise I could!

I've heard a rumour that taxis will provide one if you ask them when you book, is that true? Is it just black cabs in cities?

What seat do you have?

My DC were in their first seats until 15/16 months.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 06/08/2016 23:34

Are you totally certain she's outgrown the infant seat?

I sat at one of those AA check thingies they do one day as part of a joint partnership working thingy and throughout the course of the day almost every other person who wanted their seat checking by the car seat man made a comment about fretting their child was to big or about to be to big for the seat and did they have any info on next stage up seats.

Not one person who asked him really had a to big or even close to getting there baby. I asked him about it after and he said it's the most common question they get asked and it's fairly usual for people to think a baby is to big when they are not.
And these are supposedly switched on parents who care enough about car safety to want to turn up at a event to check

Griphook · 06/08/2016 23:42

Have you moved the straps by adjusting them. Whilst she night looked squished She's much better off in the rear facing baby car seats for as long as possible.

Both nine where in them way past 9 months, it's more the weight than length you need to worry about. As long as she's in the weight Caterogy she's fine.

christmasid2 · 07/08/2016 00:01

needsasockamnesty that's really interesting
griphook yes I've moved the straps, they have no move scope to be moved.
I think she's too big because I struggle to get the shoulder strap ends into the buckle that goes between her legs

Most taxi firms DONT have seats. Thereabouts legal requirement for them to and they could face difficulties if they provided them and they were installed incorrectly.

LittleBearPad · 07/08/2016 00:13

Don't the straps lengthen?

LittleBearPad · 07/08/2016 00:13

What seat is it?

dylsmimi · 07/08/2016 11:47

She's not wearing a bulky coat or cardigan is she?

DoNotBlameMeIVotedRemain · 07/08/2016 13:47

Sounds like this may be a poorly made seat with straps too short. She definitely shouldn't have outgrown it at 9 months. I'd call the manufacturers and ask them.

Anonymouses · 07/08/2016 13:51

I've had boosters from taxi companies as they are cheap and cheerful and require no fitting but not lesser stage seats. Most people I know who don't drive just store a seat at home or have one left at a relatives if they do train or bus to their then get in a car.

HelenF35 · 07/08/2016 14:00

There is no way a 0+ seat should be outgrown at 9 months, my 99.3rd percentile height and 97th percentile weight 13 month old still fits in his Joie Gemm. It sounds like there is an insert that needs removing or it's a very poorly made seat. What car seat is it?

I think there something you aren't doing right with the infant carrier too. She really shouldn't have outgrown it at 9 months. I thought you were going to say 18 months! Do you know a HV or a friend who can check it for you?

HeadDreamer · 07/08/2016 14:49

The straps should loosen a lot! She's only too big if her head sticks out the top or over the weight limit. It really isn't right.

Laquila · 07/08/2016 14:57

bangingmyhead would a Joie Stages work for you? It's a pretty economical way to RF and can be used for a baby. It's fits in most cars as its belt-fitted, and is easy to move between cars.

m0therofdragons · 07/08/2016 14:58

The main thing is to keep a 9month old rear facing. Unless your dd is way above the average size of a 9month old - and I mean guiness world record size, then she really should fit. Definitely go to a shop that does fitting and take advice. It may be a really simple answer that the strap can be altered. It's very confusing op - you're not alone!
