To think you shouldn't have to dust every day

I know this is a boring housework type post but geez, I'm so bloody sick of having to dust every single day.

I will dust a surface, (not high traffic- obviously I'd do them every day anyway) , and there will be a dusty deposit there again the next day if not within a few hours.

I'm not a super obsessive cleaning type person. These definitely do need a dust.

Is it normal to have to do this? Do I have an extraordinarily dusty house?
Why are some houses so much dustier than others?

(p.s I have to vacuum every day too)

AIBU to think people don't usually have to do this everyday?

*apologies for boring housework post

Mcchip - be careful what you wish for, Cornish dust may be better but a radiographer once told me an x Ray I was having would equal the same amount of radiation exposure as if I lived in Cornwall for a certain length of time (I want to say 6 months?)

IJustAteTheKidsFoodAgain · 05/08/2016 22:19

Radioactive dust aside, I only dust when I have people over so my house smells of polish

xexxsy · 05/08/2016 22:34

@ Mooingcow.

You are a hoot! And rightly so.

OutToGetYou · 05/08/2016 22:37

The cleaner does three hours a week, no idea if she dusts, but I definitely don't!

AllPizzasGreatAndSmall · 05/08/2016 22:47

Obviously?
Do you seriously think everybody dusts every day?

MsRinky · 05/08/2016 23:06

I just take my contact lenses out, and dust and grime simply disappears. Magic.

augustwashout · 05/08/2016 23:12

i just dont care that much about dust.

I dust about every three weeks..but dust doesnt worry me, I hoover however our main floor areas once or twice a day.

augustwashout · 05/08/2016 23:14

You know I just flicked back through the thread and saw that poem, dust if you must.

DD had a really special day today, a one off - wonderful moment and GM who is ALIVE couldnt be there, she was cleaning apparently. Sad

CakeNinja · 05/08/2016 23:19

I dust once a week and again if I notice.
When I say I - I do of course mean my DC.
They don't half love a bottle of spray polish and cloth!
I do vacuum every day downstairs and every other day upstairs.
We are currently living in a building site and my window sills are wiped over every single day because they're constantly covered in a fine layer of rubble otherwise.
Joy.

gingerboy1912 · 05/08/2016 23:22

I dust about once every 6-8 weeks. Dust is dust it's everywhere I really don't see the point in keeping wiping over the same shelves, desks etc I do keep on top of my kitchen and bathroom however that gets cleaned regularly. But general dust on a shelf or chest of drawers I only do when I can write my name in it.

xexxsy · 05/08/2016 23:22

@Ms Rinky.... LOL.

proudnewMNaddict · 05/08/2016 23:25

I have a dust allergy which aggravates my asthma. And two dogs which also affect it if I don't dust and Hoover daily ConfusedSad

Xmasbaby11 · 05/08/2016 23:31

I rarely dust and try to hoover downstairs most weeks. Kitchen and bathroom are clean though and most rooms are tidy.

Dusting is boring and thankless.

Dh does the hoovering. He usually does it before it looks terrible but I sometimes prompt him.

It says here that most vacuums throw dust and bacteria into the air.

See this is where I think people need good old fashioned polish and yellow duster. It reduces surface static and thus the amount of dust that collects on the surface.

For me its polish a few times a year. Then I use my dyson v6 for dusting every few days to a week (you can even get special dusting attachments for it). That way dust can't be redistributed because its sucked up for disposal straight into outside bin (the v6 doesn't appear to have the same issue of blowing dust to the sides, that other vacuum cleaners do). I now enjoy cleaning!

And yes I've been in the house of somebody who always said stuff about enjoying life and not worrying about the cleaning. It was horrific. The dust was glued down with grease and grime, the toilet was so limescaled up that it could barely flush a wee away, the carpet was disgusting (socks would stay cleaner walking through the local woodland than that lounge), the white tiles and white grout looked like greyish cream tiles with that solid black grout you can get. Even the walls were grimy. It was grim. The kind of place you would wipe your shoes on the way out not in.

Personally I think you need to tread the middle ground. So clean frequently, so dirt doesn't build up, but not that frequent that you are always cleaning/cleaning when there's just a single spec of dust in sight.

RubyCav · 05/08/2016 23:41

So that's why the Dyson v6 absolute has the air filter to only produce "clean" air, whilst it vacuums! I thought it was a gimmick/sales trick type thing. You learn something new everyday.

honeylulu · 06/08/2016 00:16

Don't open the curtains. I find I only notice a thin film of dust in daylight.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 06/08/2016 00:20

What is this "to dust" of which you speak?
Exactly. I have a cleaner once a week but I can go for weeks without dusting when I'm between cleaners.
