To expect people to pay their share of tax

Was at a BBQ at the weekend in my street and one of the neighbours who's a self employed window cleaner/gardener/odd jobs kinda guy after a few too many white wine spritzers proudly announced to anyone who'd listen that he pays almost no tax coz his work is cash in hand.

Went on to boast about upcoming holidays and a new car when the new reg plate comes out in Sept.

I know it shouldn't bother me and that it doesn't affect me directly but it's got my blood boiling, and wondering how much of this goes on

I have a ginnel and could do with a window cleaner misses point of thread

BarbaraofSeville · 05/08/2016 09:46

I sacked my last window cleaner when he started coming ridiculously often (every few days or so) and he would ask both DP and I separately for money so we probably ended up paying him twice for the same job.

He was also creepy and used to wait until the second I got home from work to appear, asking to be paid while I was trying to get in the house, unload the shopping, go to the toilet, feed the cats, put the kettle on, etc etc you know how it is.

Could do with another one really as windows haven't been cleaned for years, but they're not that bad actually.

I think much of what he says is bravdo by the fact he doesn't pay much tax so he will declaring some...Thought don't doubt he will do some cash in hand..

My concern is more if he was doing it to pay child maintenance...,I resent big business's more than the little man making a few extra's

callherwillow

I know I should be appalled but I have to admit if it was me I'd probably do the same.

So would I love.

I wonder how many posters who condemn this still go to Costa?!

MrsBrent · 05/08/2016 10:36

the cook
Costa is owned by whitbread who pay their tax it's Starbucks you mean??

DownWithThisSortaThing · 05/08/2016 13:44

thecook caffe Nero do not pay their tax, lots of companies pay some but not what they should do such as Starbucks, Amazon, Google, Apple
We probably all use companies that do it whether we realise it or not. But it doesn't make it therefore OK to work cash in hand and not declare earnings like the OP is talking about just to go on fancy holidays and drive a nice car.

If it was a guy not declaring earnings because he was really struggling to make ends meet and put food on the table, clothe his kids, pay the rent etc I think everyone would feel for him. I wouldn't report someone for that. But a guy going round bragging about how loaded he is because of tax dodging is going to piss people off who pay their fair share, if we all avoided tax then what state would our public services be in? I wouldn't like to live in a country without free healthcare, education, or a welfare system. Therefore I believe in earning and putting into the pot.

Trills · 05/08/2016 22:13

MrsBrent good pointing out of facts there. Costa pay tax. Plenty of it.

Criticising all "big coffee chains" rather removes any feeling of "I am impressed at your morals" if you don't actually distinguish between those that avoid tax and those that pay up.

wasonthelist · 05/08/2016 23:05

If he is not paying enough tax, the revenue will catch up in a while when someone shops him for having an expensive life without the income to afford it.

Ha ha good luck with that - does anyone know of anyone who's actually been done? My deadbeat non CM paying former brother-in-law proudly brags about his tax and benefit fraud and has been shopped - no action taken.

My uncle who was squeaky clean had the Revenue crawling all over his micro business and was given a grudging clean bill of health.

I don't believe HMRC has the will or the resources to deal with the real offenders.

NB I am not condoning evasion - just bemoaning how little the authorities actually do.

GreatFuckability · 06/08/2016 00:12

my boyfriend works for HMRC and 'does' people every day for non payment of tax.

JenLindley · 06/08/2016 00:19

What a fucking idiot he is declaring to all and sundry that he pays no tax and then bragging about his spending! He deserves to be reported for that stupidity alone. I hate people who talk money at social events. Fuck up, no-one's impressed, eat your burger.

Also its always been a homer where I am. Never heard it called a foreigner. Smile
