To think too many people still feed trolls?

By "trolls" I don't mean those who make up convoluted fabricated stories to suck people in. I mean the classic troll, the goady-fucker-to-the-max type, the obvious-troll-is-obvious who just posts the most provocative comments to try to get a rise out of people. And people engage with them! They might try to argue with them, they might berate them, they might try to poke fun at them. However they do it and however well-intentioned their engagement, all they're doing is satisfying the GF's agenda and giving them the attention they crave.

I know it's tempting to post a smart knockdown or a faux-pity "sad little troll" comment but even that simply plays into their hands. No publicity (/attention) is bad publicity for a troll. I long to see a thread where Obvious Troll starts metaphorically jumping up and down shouting "look at me!" and everyone just ignores them. And then quietly reports them to MNHQ.

That's ok page

Since my recent update on my iPhone, autocorrect is coming up with some interesting words...even correcting normal words that I use a lot. I have to be very careful

BeMorePanda · 04/08/2016 09:22

I am excellent at ignoring them. I can't think why anyone would do otherwise. Unless it if for the same reason as the initial troll post.

Pity we can't have a separate ring fenced topic for troll twattery.

MadSprocker · 04/08/2016 09:22

Hoping the gf is banned soon ..........

Zuccarelli · 04/08/2016 09:26

It just reminds me of Danny Devito in " it's always sunny in Philadelphia" saying "you gotta pay the troll toll!"

Agreed I reported but didn't respond got to be the best way but on one post the OP was new and I think acknowledging her vulnerability by calling troll out was appropriate by first responder iyswim

I have the o but people are usually only called goady fucker when their 'different' views are put forward in a nasty goady way. Posting things just go be nasty is trolling. Posters know when they are doing it.

AndNowItsSeven · 04/08/2016 09:57

Trump is still here and not banned, classic troll , and I am not hunting they are t exactly discreet!

FreshwaterSelkie · 04/08/2016 10:26

Enquiring Minges Want To Know sounds like the chapter title of my autobiography that covers the Uni Years Grin

Dutchcourage · 04/08/2016 10:28

His responses are like something from Viz !

callherwillow · 04/08/2016 10:31

Nah, 'goody fucker' is definitely used when someone isn't being a goady fucked at all!

I wish MN would ban it.

I have been accused of being a goady fucker for suggesting teachers sometimes lie and for using smileys Hmm

bitemyshinymetalass · 04/08/2016 10:31

he obvious-troll-is-obvious who just posts the most provocative comments to try to get a rise out of people

Thats just your perception of it though. You don't know that they aren't being totally serious. People have really fucking weird opinions and really mean them.
There are far too many accuations of trolling, when what people really see is someone with strong opinions they don't agree with or understand.

BillSykesDog · 04/08/2016 10:36

Some of them are quite funny and actually do prick some rather pompous posters bubbles IMO. The one who did the 'Frozen' tribute act and the Maui wedding was fucking hilarious. But this mornings was just a really dull teenage boy on the level of someone who thinks saying 'bum' or 'willy' is rude and funny. No point engaging with that sort of poster.

bitemy I wasn't referring to people who post an unpopular and/or provocative opinion on a particular thread and then argue that POV consistently. I meant people - like this morning's example, who I can refer to now they've been banned or at least had their posts deleted - who rampage across the board dropping in something offensive/guaranteed to shock/guaranteed to get a rise out of people but don't otherwise engage, don't try to convince others of the logical consistency of their argument etc.

There's a very troubling thread I'm deeply cynical about. Have reported it and I'm sure countless others have too.

The most annoying on here are the wind up merchants who appear regularly on certain topics and post the same just this side of the line shit every time. I sometimes forget that I have seen the name before and then when I am irritated enough to check the history, realise they are spouting the same goady stuff regularly.
