Ex-dp has ds (13) for one week in the summer (his choice), he has said for a while now he is planning on taking ds abroad for the week, in his own words "probably Spain / Portugal, I wouldn't take him somewhere like Turkey".

Anyway, having still not heard where they are going I asked him tonight and he said he has been too busy to book anywhere but it looks like he can only afford Turkey. I said I'm not happy about ds going there, it borders Syria and there was the attempted coup last month. I know there are touristy areas etc too but I don't feel happy about it. If you google it there are loads of articles about people trying to cancel holidays they have already booked there.

He now feels IABU and says he'll book it anyway. I am trying to be reasonable and I do appreciate there are risks in all places these days, but I can't help feeling uncomfortable with the idea of ds going there just because it's cheaper than elsewhere.

Honest thoughts appreciated :)

Although I wouldn't go there myself, even without the unrest, I do know a couple of people who have been recently to the 'touristy' areas and they had a fab time. No concerns or worries.

Graceflorrick · 03/08/2016 22:32

If I were in your position, I'd be offering him some extra money so they he can afford a safer resort. I wouldn't be allowing him to take your DS to Turkey.

Littlefluffyclouds81 · 03/08/2016 22:35

I was talking to a friend about this yesterday. Her brother in law is Turkish and he said he wouldn't go to Turkey at the moment. He said there's lots of things that happen there that don't get reported here. So I don't think YABU. There's a reason it's bloody cheap at the moment.

Ameliablue · 03/08/2016 22:41

No way would I left my child go to Turkey at the moment.

tiredgranny · 03/08/2016 22:49

My brother went yesterday he said all ok. Friend went yesterday with kids all ok.

Purplehonesty · 03/08/2016 23:05

Nope not on your nelly.

I'd be hiding that passport

AlpacaLypse · 03/08/2016 23:07

I wouldn't take myself to Turkey right now, why should I allow someone to take my child there?

eightbluebirds · 03/08/2016 23:11

No no no. Seriously!? It's a case of when, and not if, for something disastrous to happen again n a tourist area.

TheoriginalLEM · 03/08/2016 23:11

don't let him go!

thesnailandthewhale · 03/08/2016 23:16

Thank you all, glad it isn't just me being anxious. Ex dp and I have had a very rocky road and this will just upset the cart again, but ultimately it doesn't matter, all that matters is ds x

I dunno I have several friends posting from Turkey on FB ATM, they all seem to be having a lovely uneventful time.

EveOnline2016 · 03/08/2016 23:19

MIL just came back and had an amazing time.

However I wouldn't risk my DC going over.

proudnewMNaddict · 03/08/2016 23:21

No fucking way. Can't believe as a parent he'd want to take the risk! Shock

Cutecat78 · 03/08/2016 23:22

Thing is - no where is safe.

All the hoo ha in London, France isn't safe.

American is full of gun toting loons.

I fed think something will happen here soon Sad

ExtraHotLatteToGo · 03/08/2016 23:52

FFS.

Yes, there's nowhere that's 'safe' in Europe right now, but some places are more risky than others. As for Turkey - not over my dead body would anyone be taking my kids to Turkey.

I'd tell him to stay in the UK & I'd hold onto DS's passport. Tell him the beaches in Wales are beautiful.
