to wish there was just one place on mumsnet to talk about MAKING money

Lovelyideas · 03/08/2016 17:24

as opposed to not have it, not having enough of it, dealing with specific investments, trying to get back to work, being a freelancer.

I have been chugging along earning between £25 and £40k for 12 years, now I have the possibility of earning considerably more, and I wish there was a place you could go to feel entrepreneurial and talk about things like delegation, scaling things up, marketing, tax, etc.

If this was mansnet, there would be tonnes of places to talk about making money :(

if anyone else wants to make money, or is going about making money in an interesting way, or is tired of not making money and wants to get serious about making some, please wander over and chat.

"Most of us are here for a break from our businesses."

maybe that's the reality. It is a parenting website, not a business website.
Seems a bit sad though - it has taken a long time to integrate the different sides of my life and I'd love to be able to talk with like minded folk on here. Xenia was a bit of a parody of what I'm looking for.

HeddaLettuce · 04/08/2016 12:43

There are lots of business women on here, you're not unique or anything.

Seriously, you've shown you can start and follow a thread, why not do it in the appropriate topic to talk about what you want to talk about?

Lovelyideas · 04/08/2016 12:44

Hedda,

starting up a business, looking for a business idea, etc, is the process I went through over the past 12 years.

Scaling a business is totally differnet, not sure how to explain it

OP posts:
Lovelyideas · 04/08/2016 12:46

Hedda, I've explained fairly clearly that I've tried that and we don't seem to have a culture for it.

I've explained too that starting a business and dealing with its operational glitches is different from "next stage" stuff.

Perhaps, as Ophelia suggests, I need to move on to a different site. But I'm still a parent, and consider all these sides of my life integrated now. So it would be lovely to be able to talk seriously about money on mumnet.

I'm sure it will happen in due course.(all my ideas do eventually!)

OP posts:
HeddaLettuce · 04/08/2016 12:47

Thats there too. You think there are thousands of posts about the first bit and not a single one about the rest.
We're not idiots, we do know about growing businesses. Why are you persisting in the idea that you're the only person on a site of what, half a million people or more to have ever thought of talking about such things Hmm ?

Lovelyideas · 04/08/2016 12:49

I'm not Hedda, I'm looking for my fellow business growers, and i'm not finding them.
That's the experience I've had. great if your experience has been different, perhaps you can point me to some threads. Not ones about starting a business.

but I can say with some conviction that you wouldn't get investment if you presented yourself as "self-employed" rather than "a business owner"

OP posts:
WellErrr · 04/08/2016 12:51

I have tried.
But it isn't the place to talk about scaling up a businses

It's not the place for me to talk about my event horse's specific injuries and rehab either. The Tack Room is good for general
horse stuff but not the specialised stuff.

This doesn't bother me though, and I don't feel the need to be a twat about it, because ITS A PARENTING SITE.

And also, I'm really not trying to be bitchy, but if you're serious about 'business' you need to be able to spell it. Sorry.

HeddaLettuce · 04/08/2016 12:52

You're not finding them doesn't mean there is nothing there.

You can present yourself how you choose, but as a business owner, you are in fact self employed. You can say that with conviction as well.

WellErrr · 04/08/2016 12:52

I can say with some conviction that you wouldn't get investment if you presented yourself as "self-employed" rather than "a business owner

They're different things.
If you're self employed you employ yourself.
If you're a business owner you own a business which in turn employs you.

You don't just pick and choose.

Lovelyideas · 04/08/2016 12:52

ITS A PARENTING SITE.

I'll call my section

"parents who want to make money"
or
"no more nice girl part time"
or
"private island section".

:)

Lovelyideas · 04/08/2016 12:54

not sure what we're really talking about here, but sadly no one has directed me to the kinds of discussion I'm hoping to have.

I guess it doesn't exist and agree with the poster who said it isn't the mumsnet culture. Which is fine I suppose but just a bit sad for me.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 04/08/2016 12:57

There are many business owners on the 'self employment' board. It's just a term.

People don't just post about the starting up.

Just post what you want to in there and wait for replies!

Babynamechange · 04/08/2016 12:58

Well there's loads of traffic on AIBU....So enough bickering about where to look etc etc.... why don't we just start the discussion here? :) x
I'm certainly interested

Lovelyideas · 04/08/2016 12:59

appreciate the reply trip trap.

I think there is a feminist issue here. It's never "just a term".....

Xenia was a bit of a parody of what I'm looking for

She was a parody of a lot of things. Luckily she's still available for your viewing pleasure on a well known profession-specific forum.

I think the tack room analogy is good. Some things are just way too specific for MN. Also, if I talked about my business then it would be super identifying and given that I also talk about porn, ingrown hairs, pepparamis etc it wouldn't be good for me.

Do you have any RL mentoring? I'm no good at being told what to do so it's not for me but some people like those sorts of things?

Lovelyideas · 04/08/2016 13:01

Hi Baby,

do you run a business? what stage are you at?
I've managed to keep working/keep my skills/learn the basics of businses over the past dozen years. I've never wanted to scale it up before because the best of my energies went into the kids, esp. as DS2 had some very significant SN at one time (mainly outgrown now thanks to lots of early intervention).

OP posts:
Lovelyideas · 04/08/2016 13:02

ooh, I know xenia's profession. really want to know where she's to be found now (don't out her obvs.)_

she was stimulating!

OP I've owned my own ltd business for just over three years now, if I wanted to talk about upscaling etc I'd start a thread with a title specifying what I want to talk about in the self-employed section.

I think that section is fine for business owners as well as those registered as self employed.

Lovelyideas · 04/08/2016 13:13

Thanks for mentoring idea
Perhaps that is what I am looking for

OP posts:
HeddaLettuce · 04/08/2016 13:14

They have, but you seem to think that you are so unique that no-one else does what you do, and couldn't possibly talk about it in the relevant sections.

If you start a thread on what you want to talk about, in the right section (which you have been directed to multiple times) you will find many people who are doing the same thing.
Not sure how that can be made any clearer to you.

thatstoast · 04/08/2016 13:14

No more nice girl part time sounds like a great name. Maybe a thread rather than a section.

I never really figured out what xenia did other than own islands and shout at people who wanted to make a few hundred per week instead of per minute.

Lovelyideas · 04/08/2016 13:23

:) toast

As a business owner who has scaled up and is still scaling up, I think the tricky things is it is often very sector specific in what you do. I often give advise on the self employment board. So you need to go looking in your sector.
What have I done:
A post graduate qualification in sector specific business management this has been costly and time consuming, but has massively assisted in the scale up and future scale up. The study of strategy has really helped me think about how I do things.
I go to all the sector specific business workshops, I might only take one idea, but that is all I take.
It is very similar to start up in many ways as you need to generate new ideas and push them forward mini start ups within the main business.
I set myself targets and lay out project plans to push ideas forward. Remember for entrepreneurs only one idea in four succeeds so you gave got to give a lot of ideas a try to push things forward. To be really successful it needs to come from inside you so you have the passion and the drive to carry it through.

Wow lots to think about there.....

There are loads of successful, professional women, both employed and business owners on Mumsnet. You just have to start the right thread.

I've had good discussions about investment, scaling up etc. on these boards. No one has ever suggested I spend more time with my DC.

I think you are seeing a problem where it doesn't exist, and unfortunately coming across as slightly patronising.
