for passing up a very important networking opportunity which could open big doors in the future because he needs to practice drums with a group for a presentation in a company party?

YABU. DW has an open offer to work 300 yards away for 5k a year more than she's on now. Except her current job is enjoyable and her boss is a really nice person. This would NOT be the case with the local firm.

Do I question her choice? Do I buggery.

Bit of a bugger..
A networking evening...
Or letting the band down rehearsing for a company do where he works...

Either way yabu..

You said it was a chance for him to be noticed by one of the top two companies in his field, but surely if he received an 'exclusive' invitation then he has already been noticed by them.

I'm sure they appreciate some people may not be able to attend and he doesn't need to tell them his reasoning.

Yabu. He is sticking to something he has committed too.

You do realise that usually these 'exclusive events' are far from it. as pp says, if it really is, he has already been noticed to get an invite.
