To be gutted about my nursery

My little boy is 15 wks old. I have been putting finishing touches to his nursery before he sleeps in there permanently.

I purchased a pair of decorative shelves from a popular high street store. One blue and one grey at the cost of £25.

The instructions on hanging the shelves were incorrect (difficult to explain) which resulted in 2 holes being incorrectly drilled into wall but no big problem as once DH amended hanging holes are covered.

However, on standing back admiring lovely new shelves I realised blue paint has transfered off the shelves all over the wall (wasn't sure exactly were I wanted them at first so DH held them in different positions while I decided) The paint has also transfered onto my changing mat and changing table.

I contacted customer complaints who have offered a refund, but am I being unreasonable to think that my financial loss is much greater than £25 for shelves, the damage is so bad the wall needs redecorating! The shelves have gone back to the store for 'investigation'. What would be a reasonable request? Picture shows type of marking but imagine a large amount of wall with similar markings.

My little girl is 4 years old and thankfully avoided my house being full of sticker and pen marks. And if it was, I'd accept it was by a child who knew no better, not from faulty products which I paid good money for from multi million pound profitable businesses. I am so surprised by how many people have said they wouldn't be bothered? I'm as house proud as the next person but not over board, but when I finish a room it should look lovely, not marked and ruined through no fault of my own?

Many thanks for the congrats, he's a lovely little thing!

How on earth have you managed to rub the shelf all over your wall like that?

AppleJac · 02/08/2016 17:50

Im very fussy about marks and stains on things and i would not be happy about this!

I would re do the whole wall. If dh is dreading it can you get a local decorator to do it?

Pippa12 · 02/08/2016 17:54

The shelf is decorative so the back panel which goes against the wall is approx 15cm. That's why the marks are so big! I'll post a pic of the shelf so you can see what I mean

So was the first picture where the shelf goes?

PersianCatLady · 02/08/2016 17:58

Personally now I would go onto their Facebook page and try to contact them via private messaging and say give them one day to respond.

If they don't post it on their wall.

I'd be furious too! I certainly would not be doing some botch up job.

Same wall paper (which is gorgeous!!) and a decorator to hang it (perfectly) and some compensation for the inconvenience their faulty product is causing.

Lovely babies room 😊

Thanks very much x

OP I can understand you not being pleased but let it go. In 3 or 4 years time your house will have pen and paint marks all over the place at about waist height. There will be stickers all over the place

Never in my house or my DGC's homes.

The OP has put a lot of work, care and thought into the decoration and it has been spoilt.

I'd be more than upset too.

Having kids doesn't mean you have to allow them to destroy your house, stickers maybe but pen marks on the walls no way.

Why would a kid be allowed to use pens if they drew on the walls with them?

PuraVida · 02/08/2016 19:20

That always happens when putting up painted shelves [bitter voice of experience] I now yell "don't touch the wall don't touch the wall" when positioning shelves

MrsBobDylan · 02/08/2016 19:29

Well, yanbu, you must be gutted.

I would try and get compensation for new wallpaper-the colour on the shelves should be sealed in and not transfer that easily.

The wallpaper is absolutely gorgeous btw-and congrats on your lovely new bundle!

HappydaysArehere · 03/08/2016 09:16

If the blue paint attached itself to the walls I would be concerned about damage being done to whatever is going to be put on them. Surely, pre painted, manufactured products shouldn't transfer colour. Did any come off on your hands?

hiccupgirl · 03/08/2016 09:23

I'm sure it would look fine if you just painted over the blue bits with a matching tester pot.

I agree this happens with painted shelves and even with unpainted ones, it's very easy to mark the wall while positioning them.

CottonSock · 03/08/2016 09:41

Yanbu, I hope it gets resolved

Pippa12 · 03/08/2016 09:41

I would never paint over wallpaper with paint? Large patchy bits of paint over my lovely wallpaper??? How can you colour and texture match paint to wallpaper???Patches of paint in a area of aporox a metre square?? Not in my house anyway- ever!

I never thought or the damage it might do to the things sat on it, good point pp!

If the packaging stated anywhere colour may transfer I wouldn't have a case, and it doesn't, therefore it shouldn't. I don't believe this is a normal occurance from a supposed quality product.

(I don't have pen marks all over my house either)

Pippa12 · 03/08/2016 09:45

Thanks very much to pp who congratulated my blue bundle, hes lovely and i thank my lucky stars for them both! And many thanks for the compliments on the paper, I love it. I'd chosen it before I knew I was having a boy Grin

For those interested I settled at £80 compensation. Generally well handled by customer services, and although I would rather not have to redecorate I'm glad not to be our of pocket to boot!

As long as it covers your costs then I think it is pretty reasonable.

Pippa12 · 12/08/2016 17:53

Yeah, I'm settled with it. Mostly pleased with the acknowledgement of damage. Thanks for your interest Wine
